porc, I agree this thread was really unnecessary, but what I was reacting to were the many people who were So Not Amused by the joke and made it sound like it was this awful thing to do, when really, what did anyone lose by it? Did FlamX or anyone else go out and buy the guy a present or spend a lot of time planning a surprise party for him? They posted happy birthday a few times, big deal.
I don’t think it’s the lying-about-the-birthday thing that people take exception to. It’s the being-a-dickhead-when-folks-don’t-fall-over-with-convulsive laughter thing.

I think there’s a difference between incidents like the “Little Tassie” thing, where people were actually getting emotionally involved because they believed there was a sick child somewhere out there, and wishing someone a happy birthday, don’t you? It’s a somewhat subjective line, yes, but I think we can draw it somewhere between deception meant as emotional manipulation and that meant as a joke.
Jokes are meant to be funny, though. Aren’t they?
I think airhead’s intention was to annoy. Granted, it’s not on par with emotional manipulation, but he didn’t mean for FlamX to enjoy the humor. Rather, it was meant to be at her expense.
Maybe I’m missing something (I allow for that possibility), but it seems this IS on par with a series of crank phone calls.
What I think is:
The “fake birthday” thing is not all that big a deal … it’s understandably irritating to Flami, who devotes some time and effort to keeping track of birthdays (and this is a generally nice thing for her to do, as a way of involving people in this community, and it is appreciated).
But it’s not that big a deal. Certainly not big enough to merit a Pit thread. Anyone who starts a Pit thread over this issue is quite clearly overreacting. IMO.
It was airdisc, the ‘fake birthday’ guy, who started the pit thread. Clearly, he’s a putz all the way around.

Flam does many people the courtesy of remembering their birthday (and for some of us out here, a Flamster Birthday Thread is the ONLY recognition we have of our special day). I felt privileged when she posted me a b’day thread last year…because I certainly haven’t made the effort to remember hers or anybody else’s birthday for that matter!! She puts in the effort to wish us good stuff for our anniversary, and to see someone not only abuse that goodwill, but to fucking well PIT HER when she mildly rebuked his shenanigans is very poor form.
Thanks Flamsterette…keep doin’ whatcha doin’ babe…many of us appreciate the time and effort you put into helping us enjoy our ‘day’. And don’t worry about arseholes like airdisc…he obviously needs MORE birthday wishes than average to make him feel valued. :rolleyes:
