Can I give 'BEENO' to my stinky cat???

My beloved cat is making me sick to my stomach. He farts, and the hot thick gas cloud floats around, choking the air out of me.

He smells bad - real bad. If he craps in the litter box, the smell will wake me from a deep sleep. The cat wont bury the stuff if I am in the house, he sits by the box, smirking, waiting till the stink to hit me, and I come running to the box to scoop & flush. When Iam out, he burys it inthe litterbox.

He eats the hypo-allergenic food the vet recommended - he has a sensitive stomach. He gets no scraps or junk.

Will Beeno help him?

Beano contains an enzyme that breaks down certain oligosaccharides, as are found in beans. There was a thread about it a few months ago. I doubt Beano would help unless the food contains beans, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to give it a try.

Before I gave my cat something that may harm him, I would go back to the vet and tell him the problem. It may be just a reaction to that particular food. In fact, it probably is. I wouldn’t give my cat any “human remedies” until I checked with the vet, in any case.

Just my 2 cents.

*Smelly Cat, Smelly cat what are they feeding you?
Smelly Cat, smelly cat it’s not your fault…

They won’t take you to the vet.
You’re obviously not their favorite pet.
You may not be a bed of roses,
And you’re no friend to those with noses.

Getting another kind of food will fix him right up. Tell the vet the problem.

      • My mom’s cat is the same way. We have tried several different brands of food, starting with the cheap stuff and ending up with Iam’s and Science Diet. None improved the situation.
  • The same company that makes Beano also makes a similar product for dogs named CurTail. It might work on cats too, ask the vet. - MC

My parents give Beano to their Basset Hound when the vegetable garden is in season. He digs up his own carrots, picks his own strawberries, and eats the cherries that fall on the ground. This high-fibre diet results in a terrible stench. Beano seems to help, and doesn’t seem to have harmed him at all. I doubt Beano would harm your cat, but don’t blame me if it does.

Thanks guys.

I have to stop at the vets tomorrow for more food, I will talk to him about it.

try some chlorophyll.

My mom has a cat with the same problem at the opposite end. His breath would knock a buzzard off a gut wagon! I keep telling her to brush his teeth, but to no avail. Ew!

Some vets do teeth cleaning as part of hygene checkup.
You might call around.

if you do, rember the dose of med is in direct relationship to the weight. your cat is mostlikely 1/10 your weight so the dose should be around 1/10 of what is normal to you- then again i’m no vet

As I mention above, Beano works because it contains an enzyme that breaks down oligosaccharides. What I didn’t know before is that corn is high in oligosaccharides, including dextrin. This may finally explain the unfortunate effect that corn has on my uncle. (Worst of all, corn bread is one of his favorite foods, and he wouldn’t stop eating it for all the world). Since most brands of pet food are corn-based (even canned pet food), this may be the source of your cat’s problem. They have new pet foods that are rice-based, but I haven’t looked into them. I don’t know if they contain corn as well as rice, but they may be worth a try. That CurTail looks like a good bet, too.
