Just FTR, there’s a big difference between “catholic” and “Catholic.”
Most Protestant denoms adhere to the Apoltles’ or Nicene Creeds, both of which assert, as Ed says, a “catholic and apostolic church.”
That’s small-c catholic, universal. NOT Catholic, big-C. It doesn’t make Methodists Catholics.

In responding to polemic, however, with dozens of spurious accusations made in multiple threads, I chose to hurl his hatred back in his face.
While there is no justification for any of the black-on-white crime cited, it is likely that pervasive discrimination has provided the motive for some of those crimes. (Most of the “whitey hates me” defenses are simply ploys for leniency, and I am quite aware of that.) Regardless of motivation, criminals should be held accountable for their acts.

I’ve just looked at most of Captain Ed’s posts, and there is no doubt in my mind that this guy is a racist. Hell, he admitted it on this thread. There is no point in arguing with a person whose racial hatred is so deep that it’s like a religious faith. Don’t waste your breath fighting with this guy. You’ll never convince him. I call upon Straight Dopesters to ignore this guy from now on.
Actually, yes, Orthodox Christians have a legitimate claim to Catholicity. They believe in the same seven sacraments we do, and that includes confession. I’m Byzantine Catholic myself, which is basically Eastern Orthodox in communion with Rome. And yes it’s true, Captain Ed’s church doesn’t have confessional booths. Byzantine Christian priests hear confessions sitting beside or just behind the alter, where the whole congregation can see ( although not hear ). I wonder if Captain Ed has been seen making his confessions lately, and what he confesses to. Ed, you may be Catholic, but you sure ain’t a Christian.

Especially at all the effort and time by both members and moderators put into discussing who someone used to be on this board and how many other possible names they have. I still just have one and don’t plan on making another one. I’m not bothering to post to any of the threads that were so fondly dedicated to me (again I must say how flattered I am. Thank you all for making me feel so welcome and at home. seriously, I mean that.) But when I saw Kellie accuse me of being Captain I had to reply. I’ve never posted anything that even resembled a racist remark but I was accused of being a redneck racist. I think it’s quite hilarious.

I agree with you that this is for reasoned debate and for having some fun too, but please remember, although he may have some valid statistics, he is using a scociological (sp?) study to purport his racist views.
He is purposely trying to get people to call him a racist scumbag so that he can respond with more of his views, thus continuing the thread. He needs his attention. thats what all bullys are looking for.

I do not buy that disproportionate amount of crime in the black community has anything to do with discrimination. Rather, I believe that it is a result of their peculiar cultural values and set of accepted behaviors. But I guess that is a different thread.

The Eastern Orthodox churches do not recognize the authority of the Pope over the whole church. They also allow for divorce, although a second marriage after the divorce is not considered sacramental. Outside of that, the doctrinal differences are minor. Remember, prior to the schism of 1054, the Eastern Orthodox Churches were part of the Catholic church, and the split had more to do with politics than it did with doctrine.
Which does not alter the fact that the late, great Captain Ed is a racist scumbag.
Get off Ed’s religion. As I happen to be Eastern Orthodox, I dont appreciate your flaming his religion. You have a problem, its with him, not his religion. So drop it.

I haven’t seen anyone “flaming Ed’s religion”. I did see Ed make a statement that seemed to indicate he was Eastern Orthodox and Catholic at the same time, and other posters were trying to get a clarification, as Ed mentioned it in the first place it might have had some relevance.
