That is surprisingly profound for a throwaway line.
With just a smidge less room in the trousers than for a Catholic priest.
Yes, it’s a circumcision joke.

Of course. Thank you.
(I vaguely assumed it meant they were very successful, they always ran ‘in the black’ metaphorically. Life is so much simpler than I assume.)
Not to mention maniacal and troglodytic and … shockingly handsome. Who is that young man on the far right? Never mind, but I might just take up an interest in rugby.
I’ve never understood it either. Wasn’t the whole point of Christ that he was sent to Earth to die for people’s sins? Therefore, whoever killed him was working God’s will, and should be thanked. Not to mention that if he hadn’t been killed tere would be no salvation…
That’s yet another perspective. But carried to its logical conclusion, Judas was a hero.
Well quite. The whole point of the Jesus story is that he “died”. The betrayal and execution was critical, no point in blaming those involved, and yes, if the story is to be believed then Judas was a hero. He was the only one brave enough to shop a criminal to the authorities.
Plus…according to the laws of the time he was definitely guilty, absolutely banged to rights. Sure the trial was a little slapdash and the sentence was a tad draconian but he definitely did was he was accused of.
Apocryphal, of course, and indicative of the fact that religious fringe nuttery has a long history.
I always thought Peter’s sin was greater than Judas’s, that Judas thought he was doing the right thing, but Peter was a coward and a hypocrite. Of course, I haven’t given the matter much thought in recent years.
The Catholic kids didn’t need to be taught it at school. The gospels are rife with antisemitism.
Thessalonians 2:14-6
Peter excoriates the Jews in Acts 3:15 for having killed the Prince of Life. John in 8:44 says to the Jews, “Ye are of the Devil.” Matthew in 27:25 has the Jewish mob baying at Pilate: “Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.”
Catholic teachers have no need to teach antisemitism, all they have to do is encourage the kids to read their Bible.
Judas did it for money, not because he thought it was right. At lest, that is standard Catholic teaching. Thirty pcs of silver.
BTW, in case no one has linked to it yet, there’s a rather good Straight Dope column from 2002 on the subject written by Dex: Who killed Jesus? Recommended reading.
I thought for sure the guys in red were going to do a Rockettes.
Yeah, but Catholics aren’t big on reading the Bible. At least when I was in school, we almost never read the actual Bible. I think the only time I heard excerpts was during the Gospel reading during Sunday mass. Other than that, we just didn’t read the Bible.
Maybe in high school? I escaped parochial school for public by then.
Remember when Pontius Pilate washes his hands? Do you remember why he did that?
That’s not what “rife” means.
None of your “cites” say what you think they do.
In Acts 3, Peter does not “excoriate” anyone, much less “the Jews.” He notes that his fellow Israelites disowned Jesus, and then he immediately says that he knows they did it out of ignorance- that they did not know the gravity of what they did.
John 8:44 is castigating Jesus’s opponents, the people who are trying to kill him, not all Jews.
Matthew 27 describes how the general public would prefer the release of a revolutionary/freedom fighter rather than a religious zealot who may have suborned tax evasion. When Pilate says, “I have had enough of you people,” the people say, “fine, whatever, give us Barabbas.”
Are you here to talk about the subject of the OP, or are you here to bash Catholicism? Whichever it is, you’re doing a poor job.
Are Jews the only ones whose descendants are supposed to bear responsibility for their forefathers’ behavior? That’s a pretty shitty deal.
What a gaming set up Judas had. Did he have a T1 line too?
He was playing with himself.
The body of Christ…
You’re way out on a limb denying that the New Testament has passages which clearly are aimed at the Jews and their supposed responsibility for the death of Jesus. And not just the NT. The Church Fathers too enthusiastically took up the message, most especially Augustine of Hippo, Tertullian and John Chrysostom. I really cannot believe that you are ignorant of the Church’s history on this issue. If you are then I have neither the time nor the inclination to enlighten you. Just research the damn stuff yourself. As for bashing the Roman Catholic church you’re misreading me. It’s the early Christian writers I’m bashing.
Here’s Augustine, still revered by the RCs. Go on, tell me I’m twisting his words.
I had no wish to derail the thread further by replying, but your attempt to whitewash clearly antisemitic passages in scripture just couldn’t go unanswered.
With your head so far up your ass I’m surprised you can sense any of my dictation.
