Oh, man, I do love a good mix tape. Most of my favorite bands these days I can trace back to the first time I heard them on a mix tape. And I just finished making one for a friend of mine.

Currently spinning in my Discman is Doug by Uncle Bonsai; 13 songs about a guy named Doug. And someone above mentioned Johnny Cash so The Bobs’ Sing the Songs of… is on deck, gotta hear their cover of Ring of Fire.

Damn, that’s funny. Are they about the same guy, or various Dougs? Anyone a fan of the Zambonis? They only sing about hockey. They kill me.

I don’t know that I’d be tossing around words like “skibbling” on this board, Swiddles. People might think you have ear sex with porcupines or something.

Robot Arm, nothin’ better than a good mix tape. As a direct result of this particular one, I have ordered a Modest Mouse CD from Amazon, and will probably get something by Jets to Brazil also.

There is only one Doug. Songs include:
Doug’s Birthday Song
Doug Goes To Town
Doug At His Mom’s
Doug’s Greatest Christmas Ever
Doug At The Gates of Hell

It all began as The Doug Suite during Uncle Bonsai’s heyday (such as it was) in the '80s. After they broke up, Andrew Ratchin (their principal songwriter) kept up the Doug tradition with his other groups and solo recordings. A year or two ago he finally reunited everybody long enough to record a Doug compilation. It’s hard to squeeze them into any standard genre, but the style is kind of hyper-literate, pop-cultural, satiric folk. Lyrics at: http://www.yellowtailrecords.com/lyrics/lyr_doug.html#bday

And I’m still listening to it.

Moxy Früvous has a song called The Goal Judge, about the one man who stands between us and anarchy. And in King of Spain they come up with a rhyme for Zamboni.

I just got home, and popped in my brand new copy of Me 1st & the Gimmie Gimmie’s Are a Drag, where they cover Broadway showtunes. I am listening to a punk version of “I Sing the Body Electric.” Thanks, Dopers!

Right now? “Best of Sam & Dave”.

Folks, there’s music, and there’s music

Changed the CDs in the car…

“Boys for Pele,” Tori Amos
“A Woman’s Voice,” compilation
“Hold Your Fire,” Rush
“Muy Muy Pop Yum Yum,” the Palindromes (PLD’s band!!!)
“Songs From an American Movie,” Everclear
“Book of Secrets,” Lorena McKennitt

(thread hijack)

Swiddles darling,

You like Weezer, Everclear AND Me First!?

You, my friend, get the extra-special, all-access back stage pass for the next Seriousart performance…

—Hold on, this just in… just went to your website.
You’re also an Ani fan… Holy crap.

Gotta trade mix tapes with YOU sometime!

(No, that’s not some sort of sick euphemism)

(de-hijack)

(or would that be a byejack…?)

sorry.

At the moment in my CD player is Smashmouth’s “Astrolounge.” I just picked it up yesterday and haven’t stopped listening to it yet. Before that I was listening to the Foo Fighters’ “The Colour and The Shape.” Also in my collection as of recent have been Fiona Apple’s “When The Pawn”, Toad The Wet Sprocket’s “P.S.”, and Tracy Chapman’s “Telling Stories.”

I saw Robert Cray in Hawaii in February… pretty cool stuff. Thanks for reminding me to pick up one of his CD’s sometime.

Funny you mention that, seriousart, I just cracked the foil on a brand-spankin’ new blank tape. Mixing in progress!

And, darling, anyone who serenades using Everclear is A-OK in my songbook!

(to keep this thread on topic, The Dandy Warhols just stopped singing about heroine.)

or heroin, if you’re not a moron.
