Celebrity Apprentice (spring 2012) [edited title]

I thought it was funny how Lisa got herself worked into such a tizzy that she almost came to tears, blubbering platitudes about “working in a man’s world” and all that. LOL She must have been a bit less-than-completely confident that she wouldn’t be fired.

Even with DVR, this show is entirely too long. The way they drag out the board room meeting is excruciating. And I agree with whoever said that someone should have asked Lou who Penn should have chosen instead of him. I thought he’d pick Michael Andretti because he didn’t seem to do anything. I don’t think we heard a single word uttered from him during the entire show. Granted, there is some editing going on, but sheesh, he’s really in the background.

They have to. If not, people would scout out the exits of Trump Tower and there would be leaks galore on the order or people being sent home.

Don’t slander the man by implying he only gives 110% a mere 100% of the time.

Ah, yes. Thanks for that!

And don’t forget, she’s the 3rd most popular female comedian in the country!

Margaret Cho?
Paula Poundstone?
???

Profit!

Heh, that would make a pretty good name for one of the teams!

I imagine there are many lists and many ways of measuring but I’d imagine that Chelsea Handler, Wanda Sykes, Whitney Cummings (is she still doing gigs or just the TV shows now?), and Sarah Silverman are up there.

I finally saw the show (sans commercials). 1:30 this week.

I don’t have a problem with the way Lisa ran the women’s team. The cross-chatter was annoying as shit, and you have a number of them that just seem to like to hear themselves talk (looking at you, Debbie Gibson). It’s next to impossible to get a complete thought out. Maybe it wasn’t the most delicate way to put it out there, but I applaud Lisa for telling her teammates to STFU and let her get the entire idea out.

Victoria is/was fucking useless and I was surprised to see her go, because she has such a train wreck personality I thought for sure that Trump would find some twisted rationale to keep her in the game. Color me amazed he did the right thing.

James Lipton was weird, had dramatic utterances, and was otherwise completely awesome. He may be the oddest, most pretentious guy on TV but I quite enjoyed him.

Penn did a great job on the task - almost as if the task was made up for him. And thank God it didn’t involve seeing who could raise the most cash. Lou “110%” Ferrigno really lost it there, didn’t he? Seriously dude, it’s a GAME. And you have to bring in two others… whether they sucked or not. Clay’s point is a good one; perhaps it was not wise for Penn to announce to the others who his bottom two were. But Lou took it way too personally. I think Penn’s framing of the boardroom and his apology to Lou and George was sincere and quite kind. I really like Penn, from what I’ve seen of him “behind the scenes” and on this show.

The men’s team has a lot of strong players. Clay, Arsenio, Motorcycle, Penn, and Dee are all firing on all cylinders. Andretti, George, and 110% are not out of the realm of possibility, but I think they are all not long for this (Apprentice) world.

On the women’s side, it’s a lot harder to pick out the strong players. I think Patricia and Lisa are emerging as the leaders. Aubrey seems to be a follower, Debbie doesn’t know when to keep quiet, and the rest are kind of inconsequential at the moment.

Don Jr. had some good lines today as well.

Anybody else freak out when Ferrigno had the sword? Also, the fake neck snapping with Clay? I think that guy plays too rough…

Why doesn’t anyone ever stand up to Trump? Penn should have said something like, “Mr. Trump, I’m sure that, as a businessman, you can appreciate that revealing information when you don’t have to often puts one at an unnecessary disadvantage. Every person on my team performed well, there isn’t any one who is an obvious candidate to be brought back in the event we lose. No matter who I name, they will feel that it’s unfair. It will cause friction on the team. To name anyone now, before being forced to because of a loss, would be equivalent to you telling a competitor how much you’re going to bid in a sealed-bid auction. For that reason, I respectfully decline to name anyone, unless and until we actually lose.”

And then you get fired.

That’s it.

No, other project managers from other seasons have said, albeit in a lot fewer words, that they wouldn’t name team members unless their team lost and Trump has gone along with it.

Adam Corolla has stated that he didn’t pull any punches, so I’m eager to see his performance in upcoming episodes.

I just wanted to add that I finally saw (most of) the show just yesterday. Up to then I always felt that Penn was an amusing, loud, obnoxious blowhard. After seeing his performance as project manager, though, and especially the way he handled himself and Lou’s uncalled for acrimony in the boardroom; I have to say that my estimation of him has gone way up. I think that, had it been me that Lou was bitching to at such length I would have hurled several invectives at him. This would, of course, lead to my almost immediate demise but it would do wonders for the show’s ratings.

I believe it. Who?

My memory is total crap. I’ll have to do some Internet searching.

Although I don’t remember the specifics, I do remember it happening. So I will get back to you on that.

I was noticing on another board an observation about how fucked up the gender split that Trump favor is, and I think it’s true. Seriously, the men tend to have better name recognition: names like Clay Aiken, Arsenio Hall, Penn Gillette, even Lou Ferrigno are instantly recognizable. On the women’s side, I think outside of Debbie Gibson and Cheryl Tiegs, most of them have “niche” fame. You’ve got a spate of reality TV stars, former and current models… and that’s about it.

Most of the men have considerable business experience, either managing their own careers or spinoff enterprises. On the other hand, it’s hard to imagine what experiences someone like Aubrey, or Dayana brings to the table. I suppose it’s a flaw in the selection process… the kinds of business-savvy women that bring comparable experience to the table probably aren’t as famous as the men at that level. Which kind of sucks. I know people hate her, but think about how savvy Joan Rivers was. There don’t seem to be too many women at her level of business competence on the show.

It would be better if they chose another way to divide teams - maybe regional (East Coast vs. West Coast), age (Rookies vs. Veterans), or something.

While I think Penn was right in figuring no “theme” was needed for the show - just action and excitement - I’ll bet a lot of folks just liked seeing famous people like Dee Snyder and Clay Aiken. If you did a “Real Housewives” skit with the men, you could enjoy just for seeing famous people entertaining you. The women’s skit required you to know who people like Teresa are… and as much as I watch TV, I’ve never seen her before.

Next week’s task, however, might give the women an edge. But again, it’s so stupid and sexist that the teams are divided this way. I’d much rather see another aspect of their identity used to form teams from the beginning.

I don’t know why it’s so difficult for Trump to pull in more famous women, but it is unfortunate. In addition to not bringing much experience, women like Aubry and other reality TV stars or models typically don’t have the connections to bring in donors for the fundraising events. So yeah, the women are at a disadvantage.

Looking at the last two seasons, the top performing women on the show were Marlee Matlin and Hollie Robinson Peete, both of whom were probably among the more recognizable women on their seasons, and both of whom had some direct involvement with their charities. They could raise money. That’s why I think Patricia will be this year’s top performing woman.
