Unsweetened iced tea? Surely you jest! Just dump about a gallon of sugar in the pitcher when you make the tea and it ought to be just fine to drink.
You yankees sure are a zaney bunch!

Tell me about it. I sampled some of her tea Saturday night and it was a little, shall we say, astringent. Like you could use it to wash your face.

You bring the tea, we’ll bring the Splenda packets…

To be green-I’ll bring bags for aluminum, glass, and plastic. My waste/recycling goes out on Monday morning, so it’s not a problem.
Directions are on one of the previous pages, as well as the invite to email me for cell phone number, and assistance with lodging-some of the little Mom & Pop motels aren’t listed online.
Not to worry, DocCathode, no margerine, butter or anything like such goes into my mix.
MsRobyn, you should just be glad I’m leaving my soy recipes at home…
Why, yes, I do eat odd things. Nothing wrong with that.

Strictness varies depending on tradition, sect, and the individual Jew. Strict Orthodox Jews will not eat anything that wasn’t made in a kosher kitchen-no restaurants, no eating at the houses of gentile friends.
I’m not near that strict.
Yeah one of the Dopers making chili may have used the same bowl for pork last week. I’m hoping (primarily for sanitary reasons) that they washed it afterwards. The average all beef hot dog is certified kosher (The symbols are the trademarks of various organizations whose websites can be consulted to learn their standards. ) so are the average bun, ketchup, mustard, soda etc. A team of rabbis (sometimes these guys get degrees in chemistry and such to better judge whether a thing is kosher) have certified that the whole manufacturing process for that product meets their standards.
I only need to worry about the mixing of meat and dairy products. As I’ve said dairy products can be in surprising places.
I assume well be using paper plates. Often hand I can’t think of a brand of those that isn’t kosher.
Any raw meat (burgers for instance) must be drained of blood before it can be eaten. Fortunately, cooking a burger to well done on a grill satisfies this requirement.
What about the grill itself? Grills, ovens and the like can be cleansed. With fire. There’s some debate over when something ceases to be pork and becomes a carbon deposit. But, in my book, if there’s no visible residue from a pork sausage, waiting a few seconds before slapping the burger on the grill would do it.
As things stand now, my real problem will be everybody else devouring the desserts while I wait an hour after eating meat.
BTW- Somebody joked about meat in ice cream. According to many rabbis, and our own ZevSteinhardt, many desserts do contain a meat product- gelatin. The stuff is derived from animal bones and most Orthodox rabbis agree that it is a meat product. I’m currently on the fence on the subject.
One 12-pack of Dr. Pepper and one 12-pack of Diet Dr. Pepper added to the list.
Might I suggest that anyone else bringing drinks also brings along a case or two of water? I know that weather forecasts this far out are nearly useless, but so far they’re predicting low 80s and partly cloudy. The last thing needed is for anyone to get dehydrated. As I’ve said, I’ve got about enough water for everyone to have a bottle, but unless we’ve got a potable water hookup, we could be hurting at the end of the day. Or is this just desert-boy being paranoid and unreasonable in regard to this part of the country?
Edamame is good.

Oh, and if there’s anyone in the Huntingdon-Altoona-State College area that would like or need a ride with me, I can take two or three people (depending on whether or not the girl mentioned earlier say yes.) It’s a Subaru Impreza wagon, so it’s got a fair bit of room, even in the back seat. Plus, I just put in XM satellite radio, and this will be my first chance to really try it out (the short trip from State College back to Huntingdon doesn’t really count, as it wasn’t mounted properly at the time.) The back has been pretty well filled with soda, along with the normal stuff I keep back there, but I’m sure I can find a little more space if needed. If anyone would like to go with, I’ll need to know what time you want to arrive in Gettysburg since it’ll take me probably an hour to get there if I’m going to Altoona or State College and then that’ll add about another hour to what is already a two-hour drive.
Don’t tempt me with that! I’m stuck at this desk till 11 and consequently can’t take care of this massive sushi and edamame craving.
Too bad sushi is sort of a serve-immediately meal.
And too bad Mai’s doesn’t deliver. It’s close enough that sushi would be a possibility.
Robin
They need to start delivering. There isn’t another safe Chinese/Japanese place in town, and I have neither the skills nor the money to make my own.
By the way, I’ll sweeten some of the tea for you. I’m thinking 1 batch sweet and 1 batch not. Anyone want lemon juice in it?
Forecast for Saturday here in Philly – partly cloudy, 82.
Keep your fingers crossed!
I do, actually, and I’ve got a tank top I’ve been working on. I could also bring the infamous pi shawl, but it’s a running joke between me and Polycarp that after I finish it, I will have to kill him.
CJ
I promised Cleophus and DocCathode tat i’d chime in with my attendance by today.
Unfortunately the situation I mentioned to them is still hanging over my head so I’m loathe to go much of anywhere until i hear for certain one way or another.
Sorry about this guys, you know I’d be going if I could.
Sorry you can’t make it, Meros, I was looking forward to seeing you again.
Cleophus, Doc Cathode, the twicksmobile is at your disposal. Email me: twickster47@yahoo.com
DocCathode is more strict than I am. I’m less picky about what was on the grill right before my burger, or whether it was grilled next to a cheeseburger. And at a mass picnic like this, I sometimes forget about waiting an hour between the burger and the ice cream. I’ll eat anybody’s beef chili (hold the cheese), though I have been known to discreetly check the buns for “kosher-parve.” You’d be surprised how many burger buns are made with milk.
My gazpacho soup is all veggie, made with dairy utensils.
Hmm… next time I’m in the grocery store, I’ll pick up a few parve desserts for DocCathode and myself, and anybody else who wants some.
My car is still open. Any more Philly Dopers looking for a ride?
For the nonJews in the thread-
Milschig- Dairy products and those utensils and dishes used with them
Fleischig- Meat products and those utensil and dishes used with them
Parve- Those things which are not classified as meat or dairy- fruits, vegetables, etc, fish, eggs.
If you’ve ever heard of Jewish apple cake it gets its name because, unlike most cakes, it’s made without dairy products and can be served with any meal.
Siege
Thank you. I read the e-mail a few days ago and have been searching my shelves. Sadly, I don’t have any of his work.
Twickster
Thank you, and I shall send you an e-mail to work out the details.
Are those Yiddish in origin? I ask, because it looks like bastardized German (which has honestly always been my impression of Yiddish.)
Hmmm. Well, since my brother is no longer taking me home (Still there, right?), I either need a ride or I can’t go. Or lodging, of course, but I don’t think that would work too well. So, anyone up for ferrying me back to northern Virginia, DC area (or to a Metro stop if I can mooch a card and ride home off my mom again)? Please? Pretty please with a cherry on top?
(SOOOOOOO glad I decided to reread this thread)
