Central PA Dopefest?

If margarine is pareve, I’ll take care of dessert, no worries.

I thought Doc was Orthodox - I have only ever seen Orthodox men wearing kipot.

How did I manage to turn this into “All About Cathode And Kashrut”?

Asterion Milschig and fleischig are definitely Yiddish. Yiddish is indeed a mix of German vocaulary and syntax with Hebrew vocabulary and syntax. I’m not sure if the German used was high, middle, or low. Sephardic Jews produced a language of their own by mixing Hebrew and Spanish, Ladino.

Ginger That depends on the margarine. Most isn’t. Either check the ingredients, or look at the kosher mark. Most margarine has either the letter d or the word dairy next to the mark. Nondairy margarine is tasteless and not a reasonable substitute for butter except in recipes. It also can’t be stored in the freezer (this causes the oil and solids to seperate). And it’s higher in transfats.
I am not Orthodox. I tend more toward Conservative (this is the middle sect between strictly observant and traditional Orthodox, and liberal, ya don’t have to keep the traditions if ya don’t wanna Reform). Zev Steinhardt and CmKeller are Orthodox. You may notice that I post on Saturdays. And that I ate at Eulogy. If anybody really wants to discuss my personal beliefs and practices, we should stop hijacking the thread and use e-mail or wait until we can do it in person.

Well, we’re heading up the day before and staying the night in Hanover. I will ask fizzy how she feels about you staying with us, but I am reasonably confident that “punha’s younger brother” in the same room while she is in her night attire would probably not be the best idea for either of you;) The night following the fest (Saturday, in case that was unclear) is, shall we say, not an option and I think I can safely speak for fizzy there:D

It does not look good for the away team, but do not give up hope yet:)

I have tried emailing you before, you ween. No response.

Anyway, I have a good friend who is Orthodox, and patiently answers stupid questions I put to him (today: Hey, Seth, why don’t you have a Shabbos Goy?" - then I ran). I will make certain to make a pareve dessert. Have no fear! I have Google and know how to spell both Recipe and Jewish.

I could bring veggie burgers if anyone is interested.

It probably isn’t worth asking, but I’ll ask anyway: are any of those various chilis vegetarian? not holding out much hope

Is someone bringing tomatoes and lettuce or should I grab some?

:smack: I just forgot to respond. Now that I think about it, this seems to be an ongoing problem.

What you should bring is copious amounts of juggling apparatii so as to entertain the masses. That and it’s been a while since I did any passing.

Ooh good idea. Crowd that large we’re sure to have some other jugglers. Do you have clubs? I only have three so unless I borrow some, I can’t pass unless you bring your own.

I do have 2 sets of clubs, but they’re mis-matched. One set roughly looks like this and this would be the other set. I’ll throw those in the car along with my set of 9 balls, devil sticks, lacrosse balls (fun on concrete), and my acrylic ball (for that Michael Mochen hand manipulation thing). Fun fun.

Ack! American style clubs! I learned on some Jugglebug Americans… now that I use European style I find that Americans are like juggling watermelons on sticks! It would be really hard to pass with those. I just sold my Airflights this spring–those are the same general shape as mine so passing with them should be possible.

I have an acrylic ball for contact juggling, too, but I use a hollow soft plastic stage ball for practicing because I’m not good at it yet and that acrylic ball is hard and heavy and I could see it breaking everything in the room… heh. I don’t even carry it in my juggling bag.

I’ll bring my diabolo…

Is anyone else going to want veggie burgers? Depending on how motivated I get, I may make cole slaw, too…

I may or may not be bringing Dominic, btw.

Opal, I will be bringing egg salad, tuna salad and cold-cut mini-sandwiches, so you can eat the egg salad ones, right?

I will be bringing some beverages too.

I also am going to bring a couple of chairs and my picnic blanket so we can sit out in the sun/on the grass.

Are we having music? Is someone bringing a CD player? I will bring CDs. I encourage others to bring CDs too.

Ooh, chairs, good idea, nyctea! I can bring two, of the low-to-the-ground beach chair variety.

I’ve got a cheap boombox – can’t brag about the sound quality, but I can bring it if no one has anything better.

danceswithcats - I sent you email but haven’t heard back from you. I need to discuss something with you urgently. Can you email me? (opalcat @ fathom.org)
nyctea - mmmm! I love egg salad

The FairyChats will not be in attendance. It’s just too long a drive for an afternoon shindig, and other commitments preclude staying over in a hotel. That’s the curse of living in the boonies, but we’ve decided that our driving limit is 2 hours, unless it’s a family obligation. DC/Baltimore/Northern VA gatherings will be doable, but most anything beyond is more than we want to take on.

This was a difficult decision, because there were so many of you who I wanted to see again or meet. But the two-hour rule rules.

Well, I’m still planning on bringing my guitar, but I can also bring along my weak-but-workable CD player/boombox, since we do have electrical access, and my piddling CD collection. (On preview, I don’t know how my box might compare to twickster’s, but maybe we can both bring and then just use whichever’s better?) And I’ve got one little folding chair I’ll bring.

And I plan on baking my contribution tonight. They’ll be chocolate-butterscotch chip cookies, made with Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate Chips and Nestle’s Butterscotch Morsels. I’m excited.

I’ve got one, too.

Robin

This will probably get me laughed at as much as Robyn did for that whole ball/mouse thing, but y’all already laugh at me anyway, so I figure this can’t hurt too much.

Watermelons are busily being sold here in The South, but I don’t know for sure that they are yet being sold in the wilds of the DC or Gettysburg areas. Someone appease me?

It’s not that dumb a question, as questions go. It’s not like you’re asking what the meaning of “is” is.

Yes, watermelons are currently being sold in Pennsylvania.

Robin

What is the definition of “is”?
