I doubt it because it had absolutely nothing to do with entertainment despite your protests. Some of the attendees were in the entertainment industry, some were not. The summit itself was about climate change. I give you the benefit of the doubt that you weren’t intending to take a jab at liberals (if anything you might be upset they weren’t liberal enough for not being legitimately green) but it was basically, “Look at how hypocritical these rich and famous people are.”
I think it could have had a place in GD, if you had posed it as a question about whether others see hypocrisy in it as well. I think that could be an interesting discussion. Or it might be okay for IMHO, where you’re saying that in your opinion they are hypocrites. Though a topic like that may easily devolve into Pit-worthy talk, and it seems like Chronos might have had the same concern.
One thing that would never have happened is getting moved to CS. I find it absurd to think so. You might as well think a rant about Reagan’s presidency needs to be in CS because he was once a film actor.
I made a mistake about which forum it belongs in. I believe it was a mistake others would also make because it was not just a few celebrities. The attendees were all in the entertainment industry except maybe Prince Harry and the hanger ons.
Please re-open it in IMHO as there was no pit worthy language.
What topic is that, though? I think the problem is that you didn’t come out and explicitly state an opinion or topic for discussion so much as insinuated it, leaving it unclear as to which direction you wanted the thread to go.
Topic - Do you have a thought or opinion about celebrities who do not seem to realize that taking their jets to a climate change conference is not going to be received well by the public because of the massive carbon footprint of their travel? Maybe a video conference would have been a better idea?
For CS I am thinking that celebrity as a concept would have to be more involved; or at least centered with one person (like say a Rob Lowe) in the OP. CS just doesn’t seem a place to generalize unless there is a specific entertainment link - IE “best environmental movie starring a hypocritical scumbag”. Although that could easily lead to the Pit.
I would go maybe - just maybe - MPSIMS over IMHO but worded in terms of “I think this is wrong and this is why - what do you feel”. With your wording IMHO may be the best.
But I am honestly seeing it as more of a GD with slight changes. Stay with the first two paragraphs but change the last one to something like “I guess all the climate scientists are not doing their job , and it is time to bring in the heavy weight intellectuals to figure out how to reduce our carbon footprints. By stomping their overpaid/overrated carbon footprints on Italy”. GD can sometimes lead to the Pit but not as often as I would expect; there seems a little more flex there than the other forums. But I could very well be wrong in that assessment.
The conflicting opinions here on the appropriate forum clearly suggest that that your intent was unclear in the OP. Moving it doesn’t resolve that, but creating a new thread with slightly different wording would.
You’ve posted 12 times in this thread asking for it to be moved. How is that easier than just creating a new thread?
I’m a little kinda sorta on board with your OP, but not this passive aggressive stuff. You’ve had it explained why CS was not the right place for your thread and have gotten suggested alternatives - the pit, IMHO, or GD, with an invitation to start a new thread as desired. Insisting that the mods must reopen your closed thread feels a little petty - like, it’s not enough to have a discussion about the matter and hear different opinions, you have to win against the mods. Honestly, it’s just not that important.
Yes, I would like the mods to admit they made a poor decision in closing a reasonable thread, just moving it would have been entirely different. Clearly baggage was brought to that decision that did not come from the thread.
I would not open a new thread yet, because there is no agreement as to where it should go. I just wanted to poke a bit of fun at celebrities that overestimated their own worth. Cafe Society was the correct forum, but what do I know?
I’m glad you are kinda in agreement to the OP, CC. I wouldn’t want to see the names you would call me if you weren’t.
Closing the thread was not “rude”. Quite frankly, this sort of substance-free anti-intellectual rant is closer to actually being rude. It simply has no purpose. We hear much the same thing in right-wing media about the IPCC meetings of climate scientists who, it turns out, use airplanes to get to their international meetings! Imagine that! Were they supposed to get there using solar-powered wings strapped to their backs? Or harping on the fact that Al Gore owns a big house, as if that somehow undermines the truth of his climate change arguments.
Some of these nonsensical news items seem to be based on the premise that these people are asking everyone else to stop using airplanes, or stop living comfortably and start living the life of a pauper. These kinds of claims represent actual rudeness, in my view, because they’re not true and are an insult to our intelligence. What these people are doing is the important job of informing the public and raising collective awareness about climate change and encouraging meaningful policy changes in the areas where it matters most and is most practicable, particularly in electric power generation and gasoline and diesel vehicles, and in promoting international cooperation so that everyone is committed to the same goals.
Fine, but isn’t it at least debate or IMHO-worthy to talk about how the optics of it are bad? If you want to get others to lower their carbon footprint, then you probably shouldn’t be preaching from your jet or your mansion.
I guess my point is that I didn’t see this as a “rant” at all. Maybe it didn’t belong in CS, but it could have been moved to IMHO or some such other place. Those moves happen all of the time. I don’t understand why this one was simply closed.
