Perhaps making a donation to STRI in his name, if nothing else:
In my hands is his (excellent) book “A Bird-Finding Guide to Panama” (2008).
The introduction describes the important work of the Panama Audubon Society — science, environmental education, conservation… He speaks of it in the first person plural: “Our office is located in Llanos de Curundu, just west of Metropolitan Nature Park…”
Seems like a fitting and worthy GoFundMe recipient.
ETA: STRI would be great, too. Both.
Here’s the donation page for the Panama Audubon Society:
Instead of noting what a loss this is, I’ll note what a gain it was to be able to enjoy his contributions to the SDMB.
A man whose every post was worth reading - we were lucky to have him here.
Rest in peace, George. I found you to be kind, generous with your knowledge, and infinitely patient with those of us who were new.
Saddened to hear the news. He’s always been one of the most level-headed members, the kind whose words one never ignored out of hand. RIP. George.
A real gut punch to read this. Even his chastisements were welcomed. Having a health scare myself recently, this is a reminder of our mortality as well. I love the idea of contributions to the Panama Audubon Society in Colibri’s memory.
A tragic loss for several communities, including ours. My condolences to his family and friends, both on this board and in the wider world. May the Father of Peace bring peace to all who mourn.
Good ideas. I’ve donated to STRI.
Good suggestion. I’ve followed through.
Oh, no. So sorry to hear this news. I didn’t know him but definitely noticed that he was a fixture here. This will be a sadder place without his contributions to it.
Geez, just saw this. I knew he hadn’t been around too much of late, but I didn’t think it would be anything serious.
My heart goes out to Colibri’s friends and family, he will certainly be missed.
Terrible news. He really embodied the ethos of this place. We should all aspire to be as quality a contributor to these boards as Colibri was.
I am sorry to hear of his passing. I wish him well.
The STRI has added a news article about his passing.

Thank you for that link. A must read.
Really nice. Thanks for linking to it.
Huh. He and I were both class of 73 as college undergrads.
And, while I didn’t attend Cornell, I used to occasionally spend a couple of days there visiting friends. Cornell’s a big place; I doubt I ever ran into him. But it’s possible.
– he’s gotten a whole lot more done than I have, since.
I’m so sorry to hear this. I don’t think I interacted with him directly, but I definitely recognized his name as a longtime Doper. Condolences to his family.
I am saddened to read this. I always enjoyed his commentary and intelligence.
