Contributions to the George Angehr (Colibri) Memorial Fund are now being accepted

Contributed to date: $5,276 (updated 3pm CST 12/22/21)

GOAL REACHED! OUR THANKS TO ALL, AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

We’re raising funds in memory of George Angehr (1951-2021), a longtime SDMB moderator and Straight Dope contributor better known on this board as Colibri. In real life George was a distinguished ornithologist with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama. STRI has now created a donation page for the George Angehr Memorial Fund on their site at:

https://stri.si.edu/george-angehr-memorial-fund

Our goal is to raise at least $5,000, which will be used for a short-term fellowship for a master’s or doctoral candidate to do fieldwork with STRI, most likely in Panama. We believe this will be a fitting tribute to George, who began as a postdoctoral research fellow at STRI and went on to spend his entire career there. We know George’s many friends and admirers on this board will wish to contribute. When you do, please enter In memory of George Angehr (SDMB) in the Comments box on the donation page. STRI will send me a running total, which I’ll use to update the number above. All contributions are tax-deductible; STRI will send each donor a formal receipt with all information required by the IRS within a few weeks of receiving the contribution. Thanks in advance for your generosity.

You can read about George’s scientific career here:

… and about his contributions to the SDMB here:

Added a bit more. I hope we can reach that goal.

They don’t do PayPal?

Can you not use PayPal Key for situations like this? It should work like a MasterCard for the site.

Ed. would you mind noting the time when you update the total? I will take joy in seeing the total tick up towards the goal.

Will do.

We did it!

Great to hear!

I’m a late entry, but I’ve bumped number.

Any updates?
Thanks,
Brian

My contact at STRI has gone on maternity leave. I’ll let you know when she returns.

Did other folks get an email from Oris Sanjur from the STRI?

Brian

Yes.

Yes, me, too. Someone from the SDMB needs to write on his wall.

StG

Yes. I wonder if there’s an update on total contributions.

Did it two hours ago.

Yup, and also wrote.

I didn’t get any email but I’m always curious about any updates around this.

Dear Friends,

As we mourn the loss of our colleague George Angehr, we wanted to thank you for all the kind words you have shared and for making a generous gift in his memory. We and George’s family are truly touched by the outpouring of support. We are deeply thankful for your generosity, and plan to honor George’s legacy by applying your gift to support the field work and research of a young scholar in tropical ornithology.

So many people were inspired by George, his wit, and his work. For his family, we are gathering digital notes of condolence via this online card and would love to have you add a note. If you have trouble using the link, or would like assistance in any way, please contact Lisa Barnett barnettl@si.edu to help you post a message.

Thank you for helping honor and celebrate George, who was a remarkably gifted scientist and friend to so many. His work will live on through the knowledge he shared and his mentorship to many students around the world.

Regards,

Oris Sanjur
