I was surprised to see the type of responses to my post. All I did was Google for a site where I could voice my thoughts on this office candy jar situation. Didn’t know it was a serious offense to resurrect an old post, and perhaps if members felt so strongly about it they should ask Straight Dope to close the thread so new posts couldn’t be added.
If you do a Google search for “Community candy Jar,” even without the quotes, this thread is the number one result.
So someone from wide world of not-the-SDMB searched for that phrase, found this thread, discovered our messageboard and wanted to join so she could participate in the conversation.
And our response is “OH MAH GAWD, you resurrected a zombie brains garwwwrrrrr how could you be so stupid, you stupid candy-girl stupid person!?!?” along with a helpful dose of “well if she didn’t wanna play with the big dawgs she shouldnta posted in the big dog arena, woof woof!”

Welcome indeed, KathyL. If you had jumped in in a different forum, you would have gotten a different, less harsh response. We’re having a strange time with the zombie threads being resurrected; it isn’t against the rules, but a lot of old-timers don’t care for it (and it used to be against the rules until fairly recently).
As you’ve proven, the problem with candy thieves is one for the ages. 
KathyL, welcome to the SDMB. Don’t worry; you didn’t actually break a rule.
We do have a little bit of a culture (which I sincerely hope you will become a part of), with the idiosyncratic collection of jokes, catchphrases, and social norms that will accompany any culture. One of our little “ways,” if you will, is to pretend that it’s a HUGE disappointment to open what looks like a new thread, and find out that one already read it years ago. It’s not really a HUGE disappointment; it’s only a minor one (compounded by that :smack: moment when one encounters one’s own contribution from several years back). Anyway, the abuse meted out for such an “infraction” is almost entirely simulated, and can be viewed as a sign that we feel the target can handle it.
Again, welcome to the Dope; I hope you stick around and find lots of stuff to make your time here enjoyable, as so many of us do.
Don’t worry about it at all. Stick around and take a look into the other parts of the Straight Dope where people are so quick to be rude.
Look fucknuts, I asked what’s so terrible about resurrecting a general rant that no one disagrees with and instead of explaining whatever issue you have with her post, your response was some inanity about kumbaya and campfires. If you’re so incompetent that you can’t manage to stay on topic for two posts maybe you should look into getting a carer. I have no problem with meanness in the pit. I have a problem with morons who post dumb shit and then try to cover their ass by whining, “But it’s the piiiit”.
