I’m not sure if we’re even allowed to post these types of threads here, but hey it seems like you guys know everything, so I figured I’d give it a shot.
I have Windows ME and just this morning when I started to load a webpage, the computer would freeze and I’d be forced to CTRL ALT DELTE, and that would totally freeze the computer and I’d have to manually restart. So I went on my newly installed AOL 7.0 (which I’m on now) to see if that would work (since I know that it uses internet explorer for the browser) and sure enough it did. I went to microsoft.com and downloaded explorer 6.0. I restarted and all I tried to open a random foler on my desktop, but it never opened. I tried another and it didn’t open. It turned out the computer had locked up. I hit CTR ALT DEL and explorer.exe wasn’t responding.
That’s pretty much where I’m up to now. A slight twist: I can’t open up any folders or most things in the start menu panel (such as the control panel, I can select it but it won’t open).
I’m thinking of reinstalling the OS but I dont’ know if that would even do anything…any ideas?
Reinstalling the OS might help if you then install Linux. Even Windows NT or 2000 would be an improvement, although I’ve had hanging problems with 2000. NT never hung on me. Sure it went to Blue Screens of Death, but at least you knew where you stood with it. As long as you could see the desktop, you could Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to a task manager. That’s usually, but not always true, in 2000 and only sometimes true in 98. I’ve never worked with ME.
Anyway that’s not really solving your problem is it? I would make sure you are running the latest versions and service packs for both the OS and IE. If nobody jumps in with a fix here, browse through Microsoft’s user communities on their site or through UseNet news groups. If you have a problem, you can bet someone else has had it too, and hopefully has found a way to solve it.
I might see about trying to get IE 5.5 back on there and see if that helps you out. If it comes to reinstalling the operating system, you might want to switch. I’ve had lots of trouble with Windows ME. Win2000 is excellent, however, and WinXP is supposed to be even better, but I haven’t had enough time with it yet to tell you my opinion on that point.
Alright I don’t know what happened. It wasn’t working after multiple restarts then, but I come back after lunch and try it again and guess what, I am able to open folders! I quickly made my way to the control panel and unistalled AOL 7, since 6 seemed to be working fine (I only actually used the program like once in the past month though…). I burned a few things that I’d want to keep onto a CD, then I tried to open IE6 and hope for the best…! No errors so far, and it looks like the computer’s back to normal. Here’s hoping. Heh, I was just talking to a friend about how I’ve had no problems with ME so far, but I’ve heard how it sucks and that I maybe should upgrade to XP…Thanks for your responses though.
