Condiments You Eat Like Food

Cardamon seeds. They’re great.

Take a green cardamon pod (brown cardamon pods are too hard to do this with. Those things have to be cracked like nuts) and crush it lightly with a rolling pin or something else that lets you apply a little force.

Eat cardamon seeds. Very, very strong. Very yummy.

Fennel seeds, chewed straight up, are pretty addictive, too.

I used to eat this Japanese rice seasoning stuff (roasted nori, little bits of dried shrimp, sesame seeds, lots of salt) directly from the bottle. Man, that stuff was addictive. Every now and then, I’ll find myself munching on pieces of nori.

I can’t resist taking a spoonful of straight crystallized honey from time to time. Actually, at times I’ll mix almond butter and crystallized honey together in a small bowl or cup and eat it straight.

I grow various herbs in my garden, and I’ve eaten those as salad leaves on occasion. But I’m not sure that’s quite what you have in mind.

I sometimes finish off any extra Taco Bell Fire Sauce, straight up suck 'em out of the packet.
That’s one tasty condimernto!

Ketchup.

A friend of mine was raiding my fridge. She wanted something salty. So she got a plate, put a dollop of ranch dressing on it, shook some bacos on top and ate it with a spoon.

And, I thought it was Best Foods west of the Rockies. It’s Hellman’s here, west of the mighty Missisip.

mmmm . . . sour cream

Could be… I don’t know for sure. All I know is Best Foods sounds like a store brand.

I used to eat LIpton CupASoups right outta the packet. Also, why bother shaking Seasoned Salt onto anything but your tongue? And teriyaki sauce right outta the bottle mmm, that’s good drinkin’.

The closest I come is pickles.

I know, they’re not exactly a condiment, but I’ll buy the hamburger chips, or stackers and still eat them like regular pickles.

In college, it was not unknown for me to buy a can of spray whipped cream and spend the entire day taking hits off of it.

All I can say about A-1 is that…

well I’m sorry any cow has to give it’s life just to be covered in that stuff… ick

I loooooove butter. By the spoonful. Real butter is infinitely preferable, but margarine will do in a pinch.

Ranch dressing makes everything taste better, but it’s also good by itself!

My three kids love “pickle sickles”–pickle juice poured into mini cups and frozen. I know that isn’t a condiment, but I just felt like sharing.

They didn’t inherit that from me.

OMG Shadowfax you’re the best parent EVER! I always had to sneak the pickle juice - our pickle intake was strictly rationed (of course because otherwise we would eat the whole jar and drink the juice)… Pickle sickles??? You could market that!

A lot of these things are borderline food, at least borderline snacks: pickles, chutneys, salsa, olives, capers, relish… Others are borderline beverages or icecream-ish: Cool Whip, aerosol whip topping, frosting, sweetened condensed milk, creamers… Taking a “spoonful” of something like salad dressing, sour cream, cooking sauce, chocolate syrup, whatever, everyone does that from time to time… And peanut butter of course, who hasn’t stuck the spoon in the jar??!

People who are crunching on cubes of boullion or chunks of salt, licking gobs of Marmite, or drinking soy sauce should SERIOUSLY check this out with a medical professional, you probably really are lacking something in your diet. Perhaps a mineral. Perhaps sodium lol (but really I’m serious) :smack:

Personally, I think I really have an issue with condiment consumption. I DAILY eat a bowl of PB&J or honey, with margarine mixed in, or any of those things alone, I’m not talking a little lick off a spoon. The pasta sauce thing I do, I don’t eat pasta. I also don’t eat bread, hence the above. I have also eaten cream cheese, honey mustard, salad dressing, mayo, ketchup, bbq sauce, etc etc etc. There’s a difference between licking the frosting off the edge of a knife and eating a container of it, between having a spoonful of zucchini relish when you’re putting it on a hotdog, and skipping the hotdog and considering that jar of relish your vegetable serving for the day. I guess the question is, is it a PROBLEM? I think in many cases it probably indicates a deficiency.

Balsamic vinegar shots I recommend lol If you ever have the chance to go to one of those oil/vinegar tasting places, go, you’ll be amazed the variety of organic fruit infused white and dark balsamic vinegars there are on the market. And good for you!

I’ll cook up a mess of garlic mixed in with stir-fry vegetables like eggplant and peppers.

Very tasty, plus it keeps the [del]zombies[/del] vampires away.

I’ll eat a big jar of pickles in one sitting.

Maybe it’s just a Texas thing - Pickle Pops

To add to my 2004 list:

Duck sauce.

Any thick salad dressing, like blue cheese or ranch: just stick a knife in and lick it off.

I will eat pickled jalapeno slices out of the jar (and on sandwiches, salads, crackers etc) as long as they’re not too too hot

salt. with lime and corona.

Kim chee and bleu cheese dressing are my personal condiment crosses to bear. ( Eww, not together, that would be gross…)

Trader Joe’s used to have a condiment I could eat by the jar. Don’t remember the name of it, and it’s discontinued now, but, as I recall, it contained tomatoes, onions, oil, black mustard or black onion seed, cumin, turmeric, ginger…probably several other spices. It was heaven, a perfectly balanced blend of hot and spicey, yet light, not too oily. I search the shelves of Indian condiments for something similar, but haven’t found a close match. Anyone else remember this, and know of a good recipe or good substitute?

tzatziki
kim chee
giardiniera
Any kind of pickle, olive, or relish
