I’m knitting, I’m knitting, FCM! I think what I’m going to do is knit up some quick entrelac matching scarf and hat sets; those should sell well, and they’re quick and easy to make. And even if I don’t get enough stuff knitted to start selling, I just might come keep you company. It would be a nice way to get away from my computer (and work!) for a day, which I need to do occasionally, for some strange reason.
It is hot here, too. The humidity isn’t as high as in New Orleans, but the temp is definitely up there. The biggest difference, however, is that there’s a surprisingly nice breeze. I went out with Isaac once the entire back yard was shaded, and set a limit on throws of the Kong – we started with 12, and then after a rest I was going to let him go to 20 because he was doing so well what with the breeze and all, but he quit at 17 so we came right back in to cool him down. And the breeze kept me comfortable, too, which I certainly didn’t object to.
I have had a really lousy headache all day long. It just will not go away. It’s not an I-need-caffeine headache, an I-need-food headache, or anything else identifiable. It’s just pissing me off. Will someone please tell my head to stop throbbing? Because I simply don’t have time to retire to bed with a sick headache today, no matter how tempting it might be. Grr.

I went out for lunch to Puccini’s Smiling Teeth pizza place. I think that’s a perfectly horrible name for a restaurant. It makes me think of gobs of gunk in teeth. Bleech. But, the pizza is good. We had a Campfire Pizza, made with onion marmalade instead of tomato sauce, gorgonzola cheese and mozzarella, and big chunks of sausage slices. Not something I’d normally find tasty, but it was totally delicious. I think sprigs of rosemary were involved too.
And yet it is totally hot outside. 100-degree hot. HOT HOT HOT.
It’s about 100 degrees here and feels like an oven even in the shade. I spent the morning at the hospital and am about to go get a new cell phone and head back up there.
Things are not looking good at all. Visitation is extremely limited, and visitors must be masked and gloved because Lib’s while cell count is at .8 - practically nonexistent. Her cancer is Stage IV so it most certainly has metastized. Her abdomen and chest are full of fluid and she has pneumonia. Her kidneys are failing. I am losing hope, but I will never tell her that. I am very upset with her sister - Lib has a living will but her sister hasn’t given it to the doctors. Her other sister will be arriving from Austria tomorrow evening. I will go back up for a while this evening and then go back in the morning so her sister can go home and change.
Keep the prayers coming folks - if Libby can’t make it through this, let her go peacefully. LOUNE, I haven’t forgotten about you. I’m thinking up something suitably devious.
regarding living wills - some people don’t know how to let go, so they keep their loved one on respirators even when the outlook is bleak. I understand your point, I carried a copy of my dad’s LW with me everytime he went into the emergency room, just in case. But I also understand her sister. It sucks to watch a sibling die (I’ve been there, too)
Either way, it’s not easy - so more hugs are being sent your way
Hi everyone! In not too long, I’m on my way from the sun-seared nothingness of Mississauga to midtown, where I will meet Dopers!HazelNutCoffee, Cerowyn, Kythereia, and Lissla Lissar! Yay!
(Lissla, I thought you werent going to be there? Not that I’m complaining or anything; the world needs all the beautiful women it can get…)
Hey y’all. I’ve got four pages to catch up on, so here goes… BooFae, sounds like an awesome time. Good on you for the fundraising! Drae, congrats on the new job. That’s the beauty of temping, if it doesn’t get any better you can get on out of there.
Glad you are feeling better LiLi! Wile E, how’s the eye doing? Dotty, that poor family. That’s awful. SCL, I’m sorry for Libby. Still in my thoughts. How are you holding up?
And congrats and sympathies to everyone else I missed
If anyone remembers my friend’s dad with the bad heart, he passed away yesterday. He was bouncing back and forth between home and hospice at the last, they wanted to keep him home but he took a pretty bad fall and they had to send him back to hospice, he had agreed to be put under terminal sedation. Wake is Friday, funeral Saturday.
On a happier note…this weekend is the Columbus trip for my friend’s birthday. First time I’ve spent the night away from the husband sniff but we’re going to have a blast. I’m so excited. And Flusband has his X-Box, I know he’ll hardly notice I’m gone
Went grocery shopping today. Bought ingredients for a lasagne that will be done in about 15 minutes…yumm. Also picked up some wine and stopped at the bakery down the street for some freshly-baked (well, within the past 12 hours or so) Italian bread to make into big pieces of cheesy garlic bread. (drool)
Actually, better go start slicing and cheesing and garlicing the bread now. Will catch up with all youse later.
Great minds think alike, FCM – Papa John is bringing our dinner over shortly. It’s not only too hot to cook, but nobody had the energy for it tonight, either.
I’m so sorry to hear about Libby, SCL. I know your friendship means so much to her. Thank you for being such a caring person.
It’s 104 right now. I took Maggie to the vet, she wasn’t eating. The vet thinks she is having a flare up of her Addison’s disease. She got some 'roids, and we’re gonna watch her.
LiLi, of course you don’t have to clean for MMPers. Unless there are body parts lying around.
Just took the doggies out - it’s still 95 freekin’ degrees out there!! ick
I was traumatized today. I had to attend a VTC (Video TeleConference) - just as an observer, so I didn’t have to talk. However, I saw myself on the screen. Who the hell is that old woman?!?!? I absolutely do not feel as old as I looked there. Dang.
**Snakes ** - Are you in a position that you might be able to tell her doctor(s) that she has an advance directive? It sounds like Sis needs to be taken out and given a good lecture about respecting Libby’s wishes.
It never fails to amaze and depress me how things like this can bring out the worst in people. Is her sister getting a kickback from the hospital on the room charges, so she wants to prolong things, or is she just so thick that she can’t let go and let her sister pass comfortably?
For all those suffering from heat, plese feel free to come out to San Francisco and bask in our 67° and overcast. I’ve tried shipping weather before, but the last time, FedEx dropped the box and a freak fogbank jammed up traffic around their Memphis sorting hub for two days.
For everyone that has an advance directive, have you given a copy to your primary physician yet?
SCL–anyway to get the hospital chaplain to talk to the sister? While understandable, what she is doing is illegal. The hospital needs a copy of that LW for her chart (most LW are used as guidelines only–it gives the team a good idea of the mindset of the pt. Libby would still need to be made DNR by her next of kin).
At my hospital, the chaplain’s handle the LW stuff. Just a thought. Or perhaps a pt rep needs to talk with the family.
Sorry that your friend is going through this.
Haze and Lisslar–I’m so jealous! I’m sure that **HAZE **is not an axe murderer–she’s too short, for starters. And too nice, too.
I ended up calling in today–I woke to a fever of 100.3 and thought it best not to push things. I went and had my CXR today too. I had to pay upfront, on a credit card, because we haven’t turned our COBRA stuff in. I hate this–give me national health ins, please.
Looks like MORE rain is on the way. It’s hot and brooding here again. Last night, we had the strangest storm. I woke up because I thought that there were emergency vehicles on my street, flashing their lights into my room. Nope, it was the weirdest lightning I’ve ever seen–it flickered so fast and yellow, it was like a MARS light. This went on for at least an hour. Weird!
Rule 1 of anything video: DO NOT WATCH YOURSELF. I’ll allow myself to be broadcast, videotaped, etc as much as anyone wants, as long as I don’t have to see the results.
SCL, prayers and good thoughts for Libby, her family, and for you.
**Hank ** has probably already arrived and you’ve gone off to dinner by now, but no…no particular need to clean for an MMPer. I believe family rules apply. (Which at my house means that the bathroom is clean; the kitchen is reasonably clean, and everything else is clean if you were able to get to it, but sometimes not so much.)
Really hot here as well. It rained in the afternoon, so at least I don’t have to worry about watering (I don’t think; guess I should check a few of the more sheltered plants). My little brother volunteered to mow, which was wonderful. ETA: amazingly, the rain didn’t make it more humid. It was almost comfortable when I came home at 5:30 or so.
Need to go clean out the fridge and put out the trash. Also, I’ll be mopping the kitchen floor.
