I’m new to this board, and some of the names on here make my little brain stumble. Worse than reading Russian novels with patronymics. It came up in another thread, which made me wonder how many other names I am getting horribly wrong.
spingears I always read as Spring Ears.
Mangetout I always read as mange tout, (approx “eat it all” in my long forgotten, rusty french.) not MAN GET OUT.
Oh, and boy typer rama, whatever his real name is.
Yes, I know my name is weird, too. Dah is part of my name, fisher is what I do, and roo is for irreverence. If you have a better one, I’ll listen politely.
I opened this thread to ask what Doper names have you completely misinterpreted?
Yours. Until you broke your name down, I always read it as Danfisheroo. I assumed your real name was Dan and that you like to fish. And maybe your favorite Winnie the Pooh character was Roo.
I always read spingears as Spring Ears, too.
Recently, ronincyberpunk changed his name, and a lot of us 'fessed up to reading it as Rouncy Bouncy Punk or something like tyhat. Now he’s Improv Geek, which I read as Improved Greek.
Yet another spingears -> spring ears misreader here.
I’ve always read Mangetout as Mangy Trout, and pictured a trout suffering from skin inflammation and hair loss. It’s always sad to see a fish lose its hair…
To me, WOOKINPANUB is WOOKIEE IN A PUB. Unlike Mangy Trout, WOOKIEE IN A PUB has a glorious coat of hair, and often enjoys a quiet ale.
I too frequently make the *Spring Ears ** mistake and always read it as Rouncy Bouncy Punk. I’d be curious to hear from Mangetout himself what the intended pronunciation is.
*I think Mangetout is a guy. Apologies if it should actually be “herself.”
Mangetout is a guy, and has stated in several similar threads that the name actually is mange tout. I can look for a cite if you really want, but am feeling lazy right now.
It didn’t occur to me that anyone would read my name as nori new until people in threads started addressing me as “nori”. This was my first ever message board, and it didn’t even occur to me to come up with some punny name or witty cultural reference. I just used the same name ISPs have been sticking on my email for years: first name, last initial.
I personally always stumble over YBeafy. No clue how that’s pronounced, or what it means.
