Could you please stop making straight men look like ignorant fucks?

The fact that you can’t see my point tends to prove my point.

Here’s what I’m saying (again): it is a bad thing that you pipe up every time someone says something that you find offensive because it evinces your belief and expectation that you should never be offended. I have a problem with that belief, and I think the expectation is unreasonable.

Well let me explain myself. When the government engages in censorship, it says “You can’t say X because it causes the following harms: blah blah blah.”

When Esprix does one of these bi-weekly rants of his, he’s saying “You shouldn’t xay X because it offends me.” The unstated assumption is that offending Esprix is a bad thing and that Esprix is reasonable in his belief and desire to not be offended with reading the SDMB.

I disagree. Additionally, I’m offended by lots of what’s written here (generally by bad economic analysis, bashing of fiscal conservatives, etc.), but I don’t expect people to cater to my whims. I think Esprix does.

I have to say I’m on the fence. The comments mentioned in the OP are stupid, that’s for sure. But the threads here aren’t private conversations, so unless someone is habitually saying “Can I watch” or something similar, I think a pit thread is an over-reaction. People make lame one-liners all the time (myself included) - if someone started a pit thread every time someone took minor offense, that’s all that would be here.

Actually, I did know a lesbian in a man’s body. He got a sex change and is now a lesbian in a woman’s body.

I’m just saying, it does happen… Nothing to do with what this conversation is about, but I would joke around that this was actually a guy who could where that stupid t-shirt with validation.

I’m not really clear on what exactly is offensive about this joke, but I completely understand the “just fucking shut up already, you goddamn dope” sentiment. Folks, it’s about as funny as a hat that says “bikini inspector.” That is to say, the first time you hear it, it’s mildly funny despite its creepiness, and the next million times you hear it, it’s completely unfunny but still kind of creepy.

Two bisexual chicks, on the other hand… now that’s hot.

(shrugs) Well, part of Esprix’s charm is how unreasonable he can get. Sit back and try to enjoy it rather than trying to reason with him.

I have no such expectation. I have never made any statement that people may not say things in my presence, on this message board, or in any other forum.

Oh, wait - because I get offended when people, for example, use the word “gay” as a derogatory adjective, or say ignorant things like “I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body,” and I say something about it, then I’m wrong?

Just keep digging. You amuse me.

How is it that you agree with me and you’re still a schmuck?

Making sexual innuendoes to lesbians is offensive - not only to me, but also to lesbians, women, and a whole lot of people who have any sense of decorum. You agree to this. So because I say it I’m a whiner? Would it have been ok if, say, gobear had said it? Or does he also post “bi-weekly rants” that you find annoying?

And you’d be thinking wrong, but thanks for playing anyway.

Here’s my point, and I’ll type it r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w-l-y so you can understand it - you are free to write whatever you want, but don’t be surprised when people call you on it. That goes for political discussions, religious discussions, and ignorant things like “I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body.”

Esprix

The Hell?

Esprix

Yes, the “lesbian in a man’s body” comment was dumb. The type of hate being directed at it is way overdone, the product of the perpetually offended. Just check out those posters wishing pain and bodily harm on the guy who made that statement.

I’ve seen Esprix overreact before. For example, I once asked for a clarification on exactly what Sen. Jesse Helms had done to justify people wishing death on him. I was requesting specific examples, not just name-calling. Some people responded with very reasonable, detailed and informative posts. Esprix indulged in the name-calling sort of response I wasn’t looking for, then with some prompting came up with the sort of facts I was seeking. I replied:

Esprix and Sofa King, now that you’ve shared the Cold Hard Facts, I understand your feelings much better. Critics of Helms often would slap a label on him that didn’t tell me anything, but you’ve showed me precisely what is objectionable. Thank you.

Then Esprix responded:

Well, I started it because I was looking for information.

Esprix, I think you have a classic case of misdirected anger. Go vent at the people who are really hurting you and stop sweating the small stuff.

When you hear it over and over and over and over and over again, it gets to you after a while. I can only imagine what out lesbians have to endure on a daily basis with fucktards like this leering at them like idiots. I think people ought to be called on it.

But then, some people seem to think that makes me one of them uppity faggots.

Esprix

You mean like homophobic right-wing senators and ignorant demeaning straight guys?

Esprix

Speaking as a straight guy who used to use the “I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body” line, I said it for no other reason than that I thought I was witty.

Sure, I was 18. I think I may have used it as recently as 23.

Then I overheard a bisexual woman mention that it was extremely offensive and insulting, so I thought about it a bit…

…and realised that it was boorish and immature to boot.

Let’s face it, we don’t all have the same sense of humour. Some are more sophisticated, along the lines of a Proust Summarizing competition; some are more juvenile, like 3rd grade fart jokes and pseudo-male wannabe lesbianism. Possibly, just possibly Baldwin is unaware of how rude and offensive the line is. In which case, tearing him a new one for something he didn’t know is a little over-the-top. Like beating the hell out of a puppy for piddling on the carpet, he probably just doesn’t know any better.

NOOOOOOOOOO! Goddamit. Next you’ll be telling me there is no Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy was really stealing my silverware, and that the Easter Bunny tastes like chicken.

Dude, I’m not surprised when you call people on it (because, as others have stated, you do it all the time), I just think you’re being unreasonable and ridiculous when you do so. You have still failed to answer my point, and I think that’s because you don’t understand what I’m saying because it’s so antithetical to who you are.

It’s good, though, to see that other folks understand what I’m getting at.

Hey, blessedwolf, fart jokes are funny, goddammit! I will not stand for you to say otherwise, and I am offended at your beliefs on the matter!

If you say fart jokes are not funny, then don’t be surprised when people call you on it.

Now that everyone knows that I’m offended when people say fart jokes aren’t funny, if anyone ever says that again then I have free rein to scream on and on about it because they must be doing it to intentionally anger me.

I’m sure glad I could fight some ignorance today. Boy, I feel good.

Esprix, do you now see how ridiculous you can be?

blessedwolf, I trust you can see what I’m doing here.

Why? Someone says something ignorant and offensive, I get sick of it, and I call them on it. Why is this being “unreasonable and ridiculous?” Why are you harping your point when you agree with me that it is, indeed, ignorant and offensive?

OK, folks, listen up - evidently I’m getting saddled with One Trick Pony[sup]TM[/sup] status again. matt_mcl, you take over for transgendered issues. iampunha, bisexual comments are yours. gobear, I hope I can continue to count on you on the gay male front. Obviously I need to give up on the whole lesbian thing, so andygirl, I’ll leave that up to you. I’ll take a back seat for a while and work on The Gay Agenda[sup]TM[/sup] while you guys promote our nefarious schemes.

Esprix

No, but I can sure see what an asshole you can be.

Remember, kiddies - it’s ok to speak up against ignorance, just not too much.

Esprix

Well, my pal, you do tend to “go off” on a regular basis. This is not to detract from what you say and the points you make and I do come at this from the standpoint of a middle-class, white, straight guy so I have always been able to see tolerance of loudmouths and boors as a virtue, which is real easy when one has won this society’s lottery of birth and is not the victim of such. Still, your rants can be entertaining because of your command of invective, though I fear that, after several years of this, you risk self-parody and death by apoplexy.

Oy. I give up. Have at it, I’m taking a rest.

Esprix

Hey, don’t look at me. My last rant was about mathematics.

Absolutely, although Iguess I too run the risk of being tagged a One-Trick Pony for speaking up about gay issues.
