Custom Licence Plates — Seen in the Wild

Tom_Scud’s brother has a Tesla with a “NIKOLA” plate, and his sister-in-law has one with “OHM MYY.”

2,500 New Zealand bucks to get your initials on a plate? Holy smokes, that’s vanity.

I can’t believe it got thru but I saw IZ U DUM testerday

Yowza indeed!

Around US$50-$100 is more common IME/IMO. My current state charges $70-$80 depending on which plate background your personalization is applied to plus $15/year extra to renew. We have like 150 different plate backgrounds you can chose from, plus another 50 or so where you need to meet some specific criteria to be eligible to select that plate.

Another holy smokes. I thought Arizona’s 70+ different plate designs was excessive. It’s so many even the cops can’t keep track of them all so a law was passed that the plate frames can’t obscure the ARIZONA at the top of the plate. This makes your typical frame that has the big part at the top useless here.

The one pictured below? Unlawful.

Here you go in all their wretchedly excessive glory: FLORIDA LICENSE PLATE-BROCHURE (25 page pdf) (flhsmv.gov).

I am suitably gobsmacked.

My sister used to have plates that said I PIGOUT, because she always organized the potlucks at work, and they called them pig-outs. The front plate was stolen. Then, the back one was stolen. She gave up on personalized plates.

I once saw Missouri plate 85 MVP on a highway near St. Louis. There were two baseball MVPs in the year 1985, one of them the Cardinals’ Willie McGee, and I figured the car was his. I was all excited to pass a former MVP on the road!! but when I did overtake the other vehicle it was being driven by someone not of McGee’s gender or racial background, so who knows.

(The AL MVP that year was Don Mattingly; I don’t think he was the driver either.)

Texas tried to do that, but got pushback. At least half of the “Texas” must be visible but obscuring the top half is OK.

I kind of wonder if the UT or A&M alumni associations put in a call to their favorite political alum

Colorado’s plate layout makes most frames illegal but no one cares so far.

Every high school in MO has an MVP in every sport.

Oh, of course. But a man can dream!

Yep.

I was more making a wry commentary on the mindset of the yokel who bought 85 MVP based on the strength of his small-town high school career in e.g. football and drove around the county basking in his glory 20 or 40 years later.

Hanging in my garage are a couple of plates I’ve had in the past:

ZYMUR G

YHS 4N6

People always thought the latter meant “foreign sex” for some reason. :stuck_out_tongue:

Rishathra?

Actually a reference to my job as a debate coach, but I like your idea better! :sunglasses:

There used to be an SUV in the apartment parking lot with the license plate 808080. It was gray, so I assume this was a reference to the HTML value for the color gray.

I know a guy from Polk High who did that.
