Custom Licence Plates — Seen in the Wild

Reminds me of a bad joke. A guy drives up to a parking spot with nice Pontiac Firebird that has a license plate that reads EDS IROC. A guy in the parking lot sees this and yells over “Hey, that’s not an IROC!” The driver answers “I’m not Ed.”

Not a knee slapper, but I find it amusing.

On a big, black, Ford Expedition with a pirate skull and cross bones decal: PERL BLK. Because BLK PERL was taken?

The other day Yoda told me JEDI␣UR but really I only feel vaguely JEDI-ISH. One thing I have learned from AN1M3 is that if someone tells you to look UP␣THERE there is likely a KAI␣YU1 around and you should run!

1 Yes, I know it is KAIJU and it is entirely possible that it was someone whose last name was Yu, but that was what came to mind when I saw the plate.

This weekend I saw

DSNYDEB – Evidently Debbie is a fan of Disney stuff. Debbie Does Disney!

A4EFORT – I get it “A for Effort” in as few characters as possible. Except the “for effort” implies that one has gotten a grade a little higher because of the effort one put it, and is usually for a lower grade, like a B or a C.

I saw a few other interesting ones, but I can’t recall them now.

Actually, as far as I know, it does not imply that. A for Effort is a common phrase, that means that even though you failed at whatever it was, you gave it your best. The implication has never been your grade has been improved, just that if you were being graded on your effort, you would get an A regardless of the outcome.

Someone’s in denial: NOT SUV on a Range Rover.

Small haul over 3-4 days:

  • BRESE on a FL 5-character US Army booster plate on a shiny black pickup truck. Dude’s name I assume.

  • I⎵ENTRTN on a FL standard plate on a generic white SUV. I wonder what sort of entertaining or “entertaining” they do?

  • JWOOD1 on a FL standard plate on a Honda crossover. The plate frame said “I’d rather be growing orchids”. I’m guessing it’s just a name, but I’m feeling a pun trying to burst out but it won’t quite bloom for me.

  • PETEY⎵P on a FL standard plate on a high end BMW sports car. Petey is a well-coiffed 40-something woman of means.

  • PREPPIE on a FL standard plate on an Audi crossover not a block past Petey. They had a Philadelphia Phillies plate frame and a Philadelphia Eagles logo decal on the back window. Good bet they’re from Phillie. No clue how specifically they’re preppy. Or maybe they bake (= prepare) pies.

  • MOTO⎵LAW on a FL standard plate on a Range Rover SUV. Probably sues people who’ve run into / over motorcyclists. From the looks of the car, they’re fairly successful at it.

A Tesla sedan: CHRM TAG. So, chrome tag? No idea.

BUSSSN on a Dodge Charger. Someone hoping to move up to waiting tables? The Kissing Bandit? A fan of mass transit when they aren’t tooling around in their muscle car? Again, dunno.

Or Charm Tag, which is a type of jewelry but not something I’d put on a license plate.

MRCZILA on what I would also consider the most interesting car I saw today – a 1950ish Mercury which I would describe as a rat rod. Or maybe just cosmetically unrestored, but obviously running and driving. “Merczilla” is what I assume the plate says, and presumably is the car’s name.

CCC 7777, which doesn’t look like a custom plate, except that’s not the standard pattern in California. Maybe someone just wanted a plate that was easy to remember. It was on a boring sedan like a Camry or something.

On an almost-new Pathfinder this morning:

ANTTATA

Aunt Tata?

ABIDE — when you hear that word, what do you think of?

I thought of ‘The Dude’ as in, The Dude abides. And I’ve never seen the movie.

My wife saw this and thought of Jesus who, in John 15:4 said, “Abide in me, and I in you.” (KJV translation)

My guess is that this truck likely belongs to some dude. Maybe his name is Jesus? On the truck, I didn’t see any ichthys (ichthus; ΙΧΘΥΣ).

Maybe they just want to stay in California.

ABIDE makes me think of Stewart’s Earth Abides, though it’s been many decades since I read it.

TNYFORD on a Ford Maverick. I guess it’s tiny by American pickup standards, but it’s no Fiesta.

That book is also set (at least at first) in what had been Berkeley CA. So not far from @Bullitt.

I saw this car again today. It was actually LVMANON. The Y was apparently a figment of my imagination. I still have no idea what LVM would stand for, or what “LVM Anonymous” would be.

“Love Manon”? Who/where the heck is Manon?

Better if it was LVMAMON = “Love Mammon”.

Or maybe “Love ma non” as in short for “love my nonna” = grandmother?

Really grasping at straws here.

Maybe the driver is a Sarah Maas fan:

The phrase “Live, Manon. Live” is a famous, heartbreaking quote from the fantasy novel Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas in the Throne of Glass series,

Took a walk around the parking lot at work today and spotted the following:

  • DASBOOT on a black Porsche 911 Turbo
  • MNTNLFE on a black Jeep Commander
  • COLERD - Not sure what this is, Cole Road, Colored, ??
  • PREMAH Sanskrit for love or affection, can also be used as a name
