Custom Licence Plates — Seen in the Wild

My guess is that 911 = police, and the tags meant “cop magnet.”

“Loved Abu”, the late, lamented previous Pekinese?

COPMGNT would work for that but may well have been gone already,

.
This one isn’t about the customization, but the plate. I didn’t realize any one had such religious plates. I assumed it was a novelty plate when I first spotted it.

It’s real:

Earlier this week I saw a specialized license plate that had a picture of a tiger on it, and the plate had TGRLUVR on it.

Is that the standard Texas plate, or one option with other options available?

I’m sure it’s one of dozens of special “Vanity” plates. Which according to the moody writer of Ecclesiastes, is to be avoided…

"Vanity, vanity, all is vanity.
What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun…?"

My bolding. I love the NO KILL I, a Star Trek:TOS reference that Trekkies would get.

And BRONKA as a play on the Tonka truck is very good. It reminds me of one I saw recently on a yellow Rivian EV truck: TONKA EV. Let me go off and find it.

Car shows are a treasure trove of custom plates, and the 2024 Woodies On The Wharf in Santa Cruz today was no exception:

TONKA EV on a yellow Rivian R1T

Pictures include the old Tonka truck ad with the elephant stepping on the Tonka dump truck. Also two Tonka trucks I bought for last Christmas for my grandson. When I spotted that Rivian (September 2023) I was reminded of the Tonka trucks I had as a kid, so that inspired me to get them for my grandson.

And here’s the grandchild:

Some friends of mine had the plate MYTZWEL. A big clue is that they were Deadheads, but even when parked at a Dead show, very few people understood it.

I’ve got a few in my Cars album on my phone. I’ve collected car pictures for over 7 years. Some plates are just meh, maybe only slightly interesting, and others are clever.

AI ENG, on a nice BMW SUV. The guy probably paid cash for it out of his $600,000 AI engineer salary.

WSAABE — on a green Saab. This one is clever, and also cute. If you don’t eat sushi you may not know that wasabi is a green paste of horseradish spices. I wonder why they didn’t go with WSAABI? I doubt it’s taken. Maybe they thought that ending with the E would help the pronunciation. Yeah, that’s probably it.

Now I’m hungry for some sushi.

When I read that, I hear it in the voices of those guys in that “Was–uuuuuup?” commercial.

VCLASSY. Very classy?

Technically, the stuff made from horseradish is imitation wasabi. Real wasabi is made from… the wasabi plant (although the wasabi plant is apparently also known as “Japanese horseradish” if Wikipedia is to be believed). But real wasabi doesn’t grow many places, and therefore is very expensive, so all but the most high end sushi places serve the stuff made from horseradish.

Ooh thanks. I did not know that!

Short video on the subject. These Business Insider videos are typically pretty good

Today I saw Y GR0 UP.

The thing after the R is a zero. Somebody else must’ve beaten these folks to this idea and taken the “oh” for themselves.

Considering the potential for oh/zero confusion, I’d sure hope my other-plate counterpart is at least as law-abiding as I am. It’d really suck to get arrested for a hit-and-run the other person did.

I’ll bet your state doesn’t allow the letter O.
