Custom Licence Plates — Seen in the Wild

Which reminds me. I saw another one here recently. A Toyota Tundra pickup. Lotta decals advertising all and sundry; this person likes festooning their car.

The plate was a standard FL plate reading STLRS⎵R1. The frame was from a local Toyota dealership, so no clue there.

One thought is “Pittsburgh Steelers are number 1”. But there were no other Steeler decals, or colors, or anything. IME Steeler fans only come in one kind: waaay over da top! Dis was not dat.

Any other ideas?

Steelers run?

Saw BROSKI today. Not sure what to make of that one.

Two today. One unremarkable for Long Island: MS⎵MET.

But the other, on a white SUV: SILMARIL.

A few years back, I saw MTHRNDR (Mithrandir, the elves’ name for Gandalf). The car with those plates was, of course, gray.

So, lacking the upgrade, then.

I would’ve read that as Mother and Daughter or Mother and Doctor.

My hometown is a small town in Upstate New York, near the Tri-City area of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy (and we have another Doper here who currently lives in Schenectady). I grew up in Latham NY, because my dad was a professor at a small engineering school in Troy: RPI, or Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. RPI is known academically for engineering. Lots of geeks go to school there.

Including this one:

I saw that this morning, here near San Francisco.

RPI is also the common abbreviation for Raspberry Pi. That would’ve been my first guess anyways.

Interesting. It’s also for sports stat nerds: Rating Percentage Index. That’s what a web search on rpi turned up. Raspberry Pi didn’t come up but it’s probably buried somewhere in the search results.

Maybe the guy is a sports stat geek.

It’s funny how our own personal biases will, umm, bias what we observe.

I must confess that until your post, I had never heard of the Manual Gearbox Preservation Society. I checked out their website, and I am impressed with their mission!

Carry on.

I too was ignorant of the MGPS.The things you learn at the Dope… I also checked out the website. I have ordered a decal.

Saw a Tesla Model Y with a standard FL plate background reading CHANEL⎵X.

My original interpretation was he’s a musk fan and follows “channel X”, AKA the disinformation cesspool formerly known as Twitter.

I now wonder whether they like perfume, and consider Chanel #10 to by twice as good as the traditional #5.

Saw MAMART today… another one I’m not quite sure what to make of it. Is it Ma-Mart or Mama RT?

And BBY BLU on a blue Hyundai is a regular sight on my morning commute.

ROUSSE

Couldn’t see in well enough to tell if the driver was a redhead, let alone French.

Not a custom license plate, but tonight I was behind a car with a license plate frame that read:

SEDIMENTATION ENTHUSIASTS
ARE ALLUVIAL FANS

That’s such a nerdy reference even I had to Google it before I got it.

TEHUTEE?
No idea what those plates could mean…?

A very sharp car, though.

“Tehuti” is a form of the name of the Egyptian god usually transliterated as “Thoth”.

I saw a 1991 Z28 Camaro. Real rare now, but sorta performant for its era.

Standard FL plate with BBB⎵BAD.

It didn’t have a plate frame that read “To The Bone”. But it should have.

Or they’re somebody who is very resentful from their encounter with the Better Business Bureau.
