Custom Licence Plates — Seen in the Wild

Or they lost their ass on BBB-rated junk bonds which is why they still were driving a 34yo car. Actually they were trying to sell it. I got the model year off the big FOR SALE sign in the window.

Thanks for that. Makes sense, and that’s probably what it is.

From the web: his name in ancient Egyptian, Djehuty, means “he who is like the ibis”. Thoth was credited with inventing hieroglyphs, the Egyptian writing system, and played a key role in the judgment of the dead, acting as a scribe and recorder for Osiris.

Today I saw a Tesla with a plate that read ZEROGED.

Zero G’ed? Like the owner’s taken a ride on the Vomit Comet? Or does the ‘G’ stand for “gas” in this case, since it was on a Tesla? Or maybe the owner just doesn’t have a GED.

I recently saw BFFY4VR, and deduced that the driver must be a fan of a certain vampire slayer.

LUVPLNTS

Obviously, an astronomer. But do they luv Pluto?

Or plants?

OH␣YEAH I don’t think that mixing 8DAWGS with KRAZ␣K9S is a recipe for SUC␣C3S. That last one took me a a little bit to figure out because of the spacing. One I have no clue about is AU␣N-RUL. If it was just AU I would have assumed Australia Rules, but the N is the one that is the puzzle.

golden rule?

I had not thought of that, that is good possibility.

Definitely golden rule.

Many years ago an Olympic US figure skating hopeful, I think her name is Debbie Thomas IIRC, got the license plates SK8 4AU because her goal was to get the gold medal.

Debi Thomas. Skated in the '88 Winter Games in Calgary, where she won bronze (Katerina Witt won the gold); just after those games, she got married, to one of my high school classmates.

Ahh yes, Debi Thomas. Thanks!

Couple days ago I saw an FL plate background with the golf theme. It read DJG⎵GLF. Presumably DJG are his initials. Sounds like he’s got it bad. And yes, I got a look at the driver and he was a he.

Saw a car with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers booster plate. Those hold 5 characters. This one was UFBUC. I’m guessing the owner is a University of Florida (UF) alum.

Picked up two more this evening. Sorta headscratchers both.

A Porsche with a 5-character plate background that read PMAIN. Perhaps the P is for Porsche, but maybe not.

A white SUV/crossover thingy with a standard plate with WERTY1. Maybe “wordy one” as in author or editor or English Lit teacher? Maybe they wanted QWERTY but that was taken so they settled for WERTY?

Wouldn’t it be funny if someone here had a custom plate and saw themselves in this thread?

Saw SCR REF which I’m assuming means “Soccer Referee” due to the various soccer-ball stickers that were also on the car.

I posted my own plate upthread, as did somebody else. But that’s probably not what you meant.

RIPDSY, or, RIP DSY

With the “Honoring Veterans” on the plate and also the US NAVY VETERAN sticker at the top of the rear window, I was wondering if this plate commemorated some combat veteran with initials DSY who died in combat. I was paying my respects and taking the picture when the owner came up behind me with a gentle, “Hello.”

The owner is a Navy veteran but the plates aren’t what I thought. He had a pet cat Daisy who he loved dearly, and the plates were for her.

RIP, Daisy.

Funny, I read it as commemorating a pet for sure. The brand badge on the trunk above the license plate is not Mazda standard; rather it’s cat ears.

But the schmaltzy commemorative sentiment is clouded by the USN veteran sticker, the honoring vets plate background, and the creepy spider & web plate frame. Sorta three very different ideas going on there.

Hmm.

Saw a Bentley hybrid SUV. Expensive snooty car. FL standard plate background read JSV⎵VII.

It takes the bluest of blue blood here in the USA to be the 7th generation anything. The driver appeared to be about 50, so born ~1975. The 7th would be 6 generations removed from the 1st. At 25 years each, that’s 150 years. Suggesting #1 was born around 1825 and would be in their heyday in the 1850-1875 timeframe.

The initials JSV don’t immediately bring anyone to mind except the Vanderbilts. I wonder …

Or maybe all my math is bogus and he’s got 7 cars (at this house of his several); one for each day of the week. I just saw #VII. Tomorrow he’ll be driving the Ferrarri with JSV⎵I.
