CW DCTV Crossover 2017: Crisis on Earth-X [Spoilers after airing]

Did anyone catch the references to the Amazon series “Man in the High Castle” (about alternate worlds with one being where the Nazi’s won).

They make one reference to “High Castle” in a side comment. And the other was playing the theme song from the “Man in the High Castle” when evil Quentin Lance was talking to Sarah just before the firing squad.

I thought the whole thing was fairly meh. It’s always fun to see our favorite characters from different shows together, and who doesn’t like punching nazis? But it had some glaring stupidities as well (even ignoring the whole stereotyped “each of us has an evil doppleganger” aspect) (and the equally stereotyped “we’ll pair up and fight against the baddie who matches our skill set” aspect).

-The argument between General Wynne and Alex about maybe blowing up the portal was beyond stupid. Our characters are supposed to be heroes (as is called out repeatedly). You know what heroes do? They put the needs of others above their own selfish needs. A true hero would sacrifice their own life (or at least, be willing to be trapped) if the fate of an entire planet was at stake. Alex was just being selfish. (Not to mention, of course, that they have no reason not to think that eventually Sisco will wake up and vibe them the heck out of there.) Now, you could argue that Alex’s position is understandable, and it is, but it was clearly being presented in such a way that we were supposed to sympathize with her and disagree with General Wynne, and it failed at that

-Who was this “Ray” character? Would I have seen him before if I watched Legends of Tomorrow (the one of the four I don’t watch)?

-As always, they were frustratingly inconsistent about level of superpowers. For instance, Barry can run from the resistance base to the portal and back in a breath, but then is only slightly faster than a train when chasing the red tornado there

-It was not at all clear why the baddies didn’t just kill all the heroes as soon as they had captured them. Were they more useful as leverage? Well, that might make sense, except then they just decided to go ahead and execute them several scenes later.

-And the stupidest thing of all was a bunch of nazis lined up, with machine guns, facing a bunch of heroes. “Kill them all!”, their officer says. So they don’t open fire, which is going to at least make things difficult for some of the less superpowered heroes. Instead, they all decide to walk forward until they get into punching range. Surely the writers could have come up with something less stupid than that?

Nah, his best comment was to ask sara if she hit that, and then sara slaps him on the back of the head.

He’ll get thru that crusty exterior eventually…

I’ve only seen the 1st part of it, but the vaporized pastor was played by William Kitt, formerly of The Greatest American Hero.

No, this is his first appearance in the Arrowverse.

He’s sort of a synthesis of the first* and current Rays.

Like the first, he came to Earth-X from a different world (Earth-Two in the comics Earth 1, here), and fights the Nazis who rule the US, there.
Like the current Ray, he’s named Ray, and he’s gay.

His powers are more like the first, and he’s wearing the costume of the current (as well as the third**, who was also Ray Terrill, but that one was straight).

  • The first DC version, anyway…he’s one of the characters they got from Quality.
** The second being the post-Crisis version of the first. Ray was his grandson.

The Ray is going back to Earth-X because the CW is putting out an animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray where you can watch him fight Nazis.

If you’re not watching Legends of Tomorrow, you really should. Season 1 was somewhat of a rocky start, but by the second season they knew what worked and threw away the cruft. The result is the best, most consistent of the four shows, where the comic book quality really comes through. It remains to be seen what direction the show will take now that the professor is gone, but I’m sure it will be astonishing. R.I.P. Martin Stein.

Excuse me, I have some alien goo in my eye.

ETA: I meant to link to this: Martin Stein singing

The series actually looks to be set before the crossover, as it features the Fuhrer and Overgirl.

We don’t watch Arrow or Legends (we gave up after the first season - I’ll likely give it a second shot on Netflix). Anyway, who in the hell were all those extra people? I recognized Mr. Terrific when he showed up in episode 2 - but then he completely disappeared until episode 4. Then all his buddies showed up - with zero explanation as to why they were late, why they were there, etc. It was really disjointed.

Team Arrow I don’t have issue with their absence. But the Legends, I do. Team Arrow live in a different city and aren’t joined at the hip the way the Legends are. And they wouldn’t want to leave Star City undefended.

But for the Legends… Even if only Stein, Jax, Sara and Mick were going to the wedding (and I’m not sure on that particular mix*), I’d have expected the rest of the team to stay in Central City in case trouble started (both to watch their teammates back and to pick up the slack, since the entirety of Team Flash would be at the wedding)…and once trouble started, to get on it right away, instead of needing to be called in like Team Arrow did.

  • To the ones who were there: Stein, as a former member of Team Flash was a no-brainer. Jax as his plus one is obvious. Mick and Sara though… We can assume only one of them was actually invited, and the other was their plus one, but since I’m pretty sure neither Barry nor Iris knew Sara outside of the mega crossovers and as Mick himself said, his only real interaction with the couple was repeatedly trying to kill Barry, I’m not sure how either of them got one.

To the ones who weren’t: Team Flash was friendly with Ray (…Atom Ray, not Ray Ray, obviously), so his not getting an invite (considering that either Mick or Sara did) is kind of weird.

Oliver assembled his own team of vigilantes. Felicity told them to stay in Star City to, er, run algorithms to search for Nazis. They are:
[ul]
[li]Curtis Holt/Mr Terrific, whom you already know.[/li][li]Rene Ramirez/Wild Dog, who shoots guns.[/li][li]Dinah Drake/Black Canary, a true metahuman. Like the comic book character she knows karate and has a canary cry.[/li][/ul]

The others were the second half of the Legends, who were stuck in the Stone Age. Iris and Felicity sent them an SOS when S.T.A.R. Labs got overrun by Nazis. They are:
[ul]
[li]Ray Palmer/Atom, who has a suit that lets him shrink or grow.[/li][li]Amaya Jiwe/Vixen, a member of the Justice Society of America from 1942 who wears a magic amulet that lets her channel the strength and abilities of animals.[/li][li]Zari Tomaz, a hacker from 2042 who wears an amulet that controls the element of air. Her comic book name is Isis, but that probably isn’t going to be used.[/li][li]Nate Heywood/Steel, a historian who can transform his body into steel[/li][/ul]

One easter egg that no one has mentioned yet. Supergirl’s cousin is Superman. When she said that her cousin would save her, Wellsobard assumed that’s who she was talking about. But she was actually saved by the Atom, played by Brandon Routh who also played Superman.

Yeah, I noticed that. In last year’s crossover Ray said, “She reminds me of my cousin.”

Quimby wrote: “Flash just letting Thrawne go was kind of dumb”

Yeah, that was my initial reaction, too. But this morning I remembered that Wells/Thawne did provide the evidence that got Barry’s dad released from jail. Maybe Barry figured he owed him one for that.

Is Iris already pregnant? Felicity calls her “glowing” before Caitlin corrects her and says “blushing”

On why Barry doesn’t chase Thawne: They should’ve had Barry say “I don’t have to chase you. He will.” Cue the Black Flash.

Surely the DEath of Speedsters still wants his ass.

Just finished it. Loved the final fight scene with what, 20 superheroes!? My inner child just exulted.

On a side note, I loved it when Barry went to Star City for Diggle and sped with him to the park and John puked. “Next time, give a guy some warning.”

I noticed both of those…was the music actually the same song that “The Man in the High Castle” uses for its theme, or just a similar haunting version of Edelweiss?

Thawne has come back twice from being derezzed. He has traveled through time so many times that he exists outside the timeline. He is effectively immortal. Barry killing him wouldn’t have made one bit of difference.
