Which is a non sequitur. What is it about the chase system in GTA that only works in that genre in comparison to Cyberpunk? And the genre that Cyberpunk 2077 belongs to, is that genre called “broken police system”?
I’ll let this author explain things to help clarify.
Back at launch, players pretty quickly noticed that one particular system in the game was severely lacking. It was missing entirely, in fact: the ability for police to respond in a believable way when you committed a crime. If you got a warrant issued and tried to escape in your car, cops would chase you on foot even if their cars were parked right there. You’d never see a cop car pursuing you, ever, you’d only see more cops appear (also on foot) in your path. And even if you shot someone in an elevator or out in the desert with no one else around, you’d quickly find yourself surrounded by police because rather than actually responding to your crime from a believable distance, they’d simply materialize out of thin air a few feet behind you.
I know Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t meant to be GTA. I’m sure there’s far more to making cops chase you in cars than just typing <police.chase-you.in_cars=“true”> into the game’s engine. But police who have the ability to teleport yet can’t even make a proper U-turn just make the world feel unconvincing, which was really disappointing in a city that clearly had so much detail poured into it. The AI could drive around in set patterns but struggled whenever they had to deviate from them.
It was pretty clear there was a big hunk of videogame missing from this videogame. Teleporting cops were a band-aid stuck on a missing limb. Hell, even in a scripted mission where you’re supposed to escape from cops pursuing you in a car, they’d literally vanish the second you stopped looking at them
So again, I have no idea what relevance your comment has.
I don’t want to accidentally rear-end someone in traffic and then waste half an hour running away from/mowing down cops. It’s pointless and tedious and not why I play the game.
It’s an RPG, not a sandbox mayhem simulator like GTA. I’m not a fan of “emergent gameplay”.
Nobody is advocating that. I don’t see anyone saying to completely imitate the system in GTA.
But the system in Cyberpunk 2077 is broken. And the reason isn’t because systems like that are complicated and it’s too hard to make one that works. Vice City was released over two decades ago and had a functioning one. Hence my comment about how there really isn’t any excuse for how screwed up it is in this game.
Fortunately, the developers of Cyberpunk 2077 are on my side, because they are fixing it.
I guess I’ve never had a problem with it, because I very rarely felt the need to draw the cops’ attention, and the few times I did it was by accident and I was glad they didn’t chase me too hard.
Imagine that every time you got on a motorcycle, it would just start crashing into walls. If someone talked about how pleased they were that motorcycles were finally getting fixed, how useful would it be for someone to comment that they don’t like motorcycles and they are glad they don’t work because they only use cars?
Then you should be more of a fan of a system that puts consequences on people who don’t roleplay, and would instead just cause mayhem without there being any kind of deterrent.
So long as your fix doesn’t take away from my car-driving experience, I guess I’d be fine with it. I just want my car to be a car, not a motorcycle.
(Incidentally, that’s a someone ironic simile you used - I drive motorcycles almost exclusively in the game, and not cars, so as not to crash into people and alert the cops).
It’s probably more ironic that I do the same thing.
And just for the record, while I do enjoy the GTA games for the most part, I like Cyberpunk 2077 far more and definitely don’t want it to be “GTA in the future”.
While I’m not looking to play Future GTA, the police response system was clearly based on it and was a half-assed mess so I’m glad they’re fixing it. Decoupling armor from clothing is a solid choice in a setting where fashion is supposed to be king but you’re shuffled into a few options for sake of stats. The revamped perk/skill system could be huge but no way to really know until we see it.
I wonder if they’ll either abandon swimming or make it worthwhile. Right now, the only time you meaningfully use it is during a story mission where you get a rebreather anyway but they included the swimming mods into the game. And there’s not only nothing at all to see/find while swimming outside of that mission, but it’s also trivial to swim under the map because no one bothered to tighten up the geometry underwater.
I agree; there are games where I enjoy being chased and then hiding, but Cyberpunk is not really one of them for various reasons (e.g. confusing street layout, high possibility of collateral damage using certain weapons).
I beat the game three times, and police were rarely a factor. I remember getting too close to a crime scene and they opened fire on me. During another mission, I ran awry of a police drone and ended up destroying it. But I don’t remember them ever giving chase or popping up at strange times to shoot at me.
Funny enough, I usually helped the cops. I responded to a lot of NCPD alerts to take down criminals, and there were also random firefights between cops and gangs that I’d insert myself into, executing the gang members to make sure the cops survived. I liked the fact that I could do that sort of thing.
Here is a nice video that goes over the majority of revealed changes they are making. Again, this is retroactive, affecting the main game, not just the new DLC. Pretty deep changes. It looks like they, you know, have maybe finished the game now and are delivering the product they intended.
Here is a great video about how they created the crucifixion quest. In a game with many flaws, I found this quest to be the absolute best in the game and listening to its construction is interesting. They really planned this one out visually, spatially, and with great thought about what players might do.
I thought it was interesting the first time I played the game, but I think I’ve skipped it whenever I’ve replayed. It’s mostly just watching a bunch of cut scenes, essentially.
It’s interesting to see how they lead you from one section to the next, though.
With the impending release of the new DLC and overhaul of the entire game, the CP2077 lead programmer posted on Twitter:
Before release CP2077 2.0 and PL please check conditions of your cooling systems in PC. We use all what you have, so workload on CPU 90% on 8 core is expected. To save your time please run Cinebench or similar and check stability of your systems
Just saw Idris Elba point out that, “This isn’t DLC. This is an expansion.”
I hope it gets good reviews straight out of the gate. It’s possible they made an expansion better than the original game. I hope it is true. I know they put the director of the expansion in charge of Cyberpunk 2.
