D & D on the Straight Dope setup thread. (In Middle Earth FA63)

Another vote for starting each new adventure with a new thread, with links back to previous ones. I also like the idea of a lower-level Nienna priestess to join the party - it’d be good to have her healing powers, and might spice things up a bit genderwise, y’know.

Malacandra, great poetry. Keep it up!

What Exit?, just wanted to say again how much fun this has been, and how grateful we all are that you’re DM’ing it. Help yourself to any of the ideas in my post 398 in this thread, if you like. Middle-earth is a big place. We could keep going with this for a good long time.

Talking of DMOTR, don’t be in too much of a hurry to get a bit of skirt in the party.

Looks like four votes for new threads between each adventure, so one more will decide it.

The Healer is also winning out, no surprise there. I have a few ideas already for that.

I strongly agree with the Poetry. I am extremely happy Mal chose to play a Bard.

I would not worry about running out of things to do in Middle Earth. My longest campaigns went multi-generational and explored the South and the East and even the North. The biggest problem has been the players getting so powerful that there was no reasonable challenges left and I strongly encouraged retirement with occasional appearances in later adventures. (Mainly the elves for obvious reasons.)

D_Odds, no Squirrels. Not that Moose.
Post 398 had a list and all are possible. Mordor is even likely.

  • sailing on the Sea of Rhun
  • bending the elbow in the vineyards of Dorwinion
  • hanging with Radagast
  • seeing what’s happened in Mordor since Sauron’s fall
  • visiting the refounded royal city of Annuminas
  • dropping by the Shire
  • a well-bundled visit to the Ice-Bay of Forochel (maybe with a side trip to see Cirdan in the Grey Havens)
  • a raid against Umbar
  • a return to Moria
  • a return to Dale and Erebor

I would be in favor of new threads for each adventure. It will help keep things organized and easy to refer back on. I am also in favor of the addition of a healing Cleric (this is for selfish reasons of wanting to watch a cleric play so I can learn for glee’s game).

That is fine, but this Cleric will little resemble a normal Cleric. She will be an exceptional healer and have no combat spells or weapons. The most offensive spell she would have would be a light spell or Charm spell.

Her healing will have bonuses and as she does not even where armor, keeping her safe will become an onoging concern.

I need to check my notes back home and of course we need to at least get to Minas Tirith.

I’ve always been interested in chasing down the remaining two Istari.

What Exit?, will she be hot and loose?

Hot probably, loose most certainly not. Professor Tolkien would not approve methinks.

So I guess channeling Aragorn from DM of the Rings might not be helpful to the party.

I believe Gil-Gandel legged it that way ------------------------>

I like the idea of the NPC cleric, though I might suggest that while not an offensive caster, she might bring some buffs to the party as well. I think Ghan and I will have offensive magic covered. Oh, and it’s a little ridiculous that over three separate games of D&D on these Boards, there are zero female PCs.

I’d vote for the one-thread system, especially with re-search times up to 5 minutes. It would also be fun to take a shot at the longest-thread title. But it’s not important.

I won’t give up until I make the DM bang his head against the table on at least 3 separate occasions over the same subject, or 6 separate times overall. That’s half the fun of playing.

I’m already having issues keeping Deor and Ghan alive - I only have three swords!

The Healer would be able to provide Bless and Chant type spells. I would have to look into what else.

To the one-thread part as searches are 5 minutes apart, I will ensure the first post of every new thread will have links back to all the prior threads. That should eliminate that part.

I do somewhat prefer the one thread, but like you, it is minor and I also like where each thread becomes a chapter in our ongoing story. So I am happy enough to go with the party vote.
D_Odds: I can work on helping Ghân I think for staying alive. That should be the easier one. The Mage and Healer would be the tougher ones.

If a flying squirrel did show up, it is far more likely that a cat would eat it than it would stay around.

A low level cleric will have almost exclusively healing spells.

Sadly there are few female roleplayers (and chess players too) :frowning:

P.S. You’re in demand in the Vikings! thread

Don’t worry about that - with another cleric I will have both my blowpipe and Flame Blade.

Hopefully she won’t be too high level - wouldn’t she have to be 3rd level to cast Chant?

Brin is just pulling your leg about protecting the casters.

In all the combats we’ve had, Ghân has never been hit, and Deor only once.

If we get another healer (and Ghân casts Barkskin) he could probably take 4 orcs by himself.
Plus if I find a couple of fighting dog Animal Friends, the casters will be even safer.

Jim must be overworked. At least you got my three swords reference…

The NY Yankees were just rained out, so maybe What Exit? will switch his attention back here.

Sorry it has been a rough Monday, I originally had hopes to get you back to Minas Tirith today. But that did not happen.

We still luv ya, Jim. Probably crying over the postponement, just like me.

Yes, I guess the nearest we have is an important female NPC in the Medieval campaign. On the other hand it’s not necessarily easy to work one into a Viking campaign, for a start.

I personally have played many female PCs quite unblushingly, though rather more men overall. One memorable one from the 80s started life as Ciriel the elven MU and through a series of reincarnations became Eclipse the bugbear, Ciriel the half-elf, Icicle the ice para-elemental, Odessa Proudfoot the halfling and eventually Total Eclipse the troll (who had pretty good prospects for long-term survival, really).

If not for marriage.
