Dad in hospital.

Sleep is good. I hope your family can get a bit too. We are pulling for you here.

Good to hear the progress, even though it seems small it’s still very good news as Quasi mentioned.

Best wishes Bos,
It sounds encoraging that your dad is making the progress that he’s been making!

hope he continues to get better quickly. can you provide details of what prompted the surgery and your dad’s age and overall health? my dad has an inoperable AAA that was 7.5 cm when measured last august and it is causing him a lot of back pain recently and I’m afraid it is going to burst soon :frowning:
my dad is 81, his life was saved back in 1989 when a 22cm aneurysm was discovered during a routine workplace physical. the one he had then was near the groin and that area and into his legs was replaced. his current AAA is near the kidneys and so will only be repaired when it bursts.

What prompted the surgery is that he was taken away in the middle of the night by ambulence, to save his life.

And most AAA case die before reaching the hospital, after bursting.

You need to talk to your Dad. He may be taking one big risk by delaying surgery.

My Dad was unchanged last night.

Bosda Di’Chi of Tricor- I’m so glad your dad has beaten the odds. AAA is terrifying.

clarkstar- Inoperable in terms of AAA means that the surgeons feel that the risk of your dad dying on the table or in the immediate post-op period from an elective repair is higher than the risk that the AAA will rupture spontaneously.
This risk-benefit ratio might have changed if the AAA is growing or leaking, and an elective reapir might be worth the risk. A 7.5cm AAA is usually asymptomatic- your dad needs his back pain investigated.

If the AAA ruptures 60% of patients will die before reaching hospital, and 40% of those who survive will die during or after surgery.

Dad was off the respirator today.

That is, for 8 hours, Dad did the breathing. They were still giving him oxygen.

Swelling going down, color improved. Surgeon say Dad is making “satisfactory progress”.

Go Dad !!

That’s great to hear, Bosda!

Best wishes to you and your Dad Bosda.

Best wishes and good thoughts for you and your dad, Bosda. Glad he’s off the vent and healing!

Not 100% off the vent.

They took him off it for 8 hours.

Back on again later.

They will take him off again later, for a while.
Wean his lungs off it, they said.

Surgeon saw him today, morning x-rays are good.

He has a 99 Degree fever, & they are doing lab tests.

Correction, for 2 hours, yesterday.

Today, he could tolerate 30 minutes off vent.

Tests came back clear of infections.

good deal. thanks for the info you provided, hope his recovery continues swiftly

i’ve heard conflicting reports that it was leaking (the diagnosis was in another state). he was taken to the hospital for back pain and constipation when he was in Michigan last fall. the hospital in MI life flighted him to St Vincents in Toledo, Ohio where his vascualr surgeon worked. turned out the surgeon knew about it 2 years ago but decided not to tell my dad since it was only 4cm (i think) at the time and did not want him to worry. the reasons for not operating now were that the expected outcome was either paralysis, loss of kidney function, or death, since my dad is 81 years old. basically the diagnosis was terminal but we have no idea how long he’s got.
I asked him if he would go to his family doctor this month but he said he would wait for the appt he has for the beginning of march. I was hoping to find out that maybe something else relatively minor was wrong, like a slipped disc or something and not the aneurysm pressing into his back.
I had him at the doctor’s in January after he had a TIA. at this point i have to accompany him to all his appts because he will downplay or totally not tell the doctor about his symptoms. 6 days ago his legs went numb for about an hour and i still cant get him to go to the doctor- i did get him to wear a back brace on his morning walks and when his back starts hurting him.

funny thing is, when my dad had his 22cm aneurysm in 1989, he had no back pain or other symptoms whatsoever. that info makes me want to believ that this might not be related but realistically i know it most likely is…

p.s. sorry for hijack bosda

Don’t apologise–it results in useful info for all of us.

Hope your Dad is still getting stronger, Bosda.

I need to go back to work tomorrow.

And I’m a wreck.

And Dad is not out of danger.

Popping in to say I’m pulling for your dad. Hang in there, Bos and Dad!!!

that sucks. why can’t you get family leave?
