Posted 04/05/2024, 10:32 A.M. EDT. To all my Doper friends in Brooklyn: Yes, that was an earthquake just now. Seemed fairly benign as earthquakes go, but keep in mind that I’m a California boy, and our buildings were (for the most part) designed to shrug these things off.
I hope no one was unduly alarmed, and that everyone’s knickknacks and tchotchkes remained on their shelves, safe and unbroken.
Here’s a truly mini rant. I hate it when news organizations report on an event that happened a week ago, but we’re a couple of days into a new month, so instead of saying it happened “last week” they say it happened “last month”. Technically it’s true, but it always makes me pause and say “That wasn’t last month, it was just last week!” Argh. Must be some stupid style rule.
Update to my whiny rant from last night. I did indeed not sleep and was pretty fucking miserable. The dentist took a look at things and said my teeth seem to be ok. So it’s a matter of which came first - the tooth pain or the sinus infection - and we will have to wait until the infection resolves to figure it out. I just took the starter dose of antibiotics and a blessed pain pill. I was surprised he offered some. I thought it was damned impossible to get those these days. Hopefully, I’ll be able to take a nap in a bit. I just want the pain to lighten up for a little while at least. I know it’s going to take a couple days for the infection to start to subside so I’ll take any relief I can get.
I can log off work at 5 pm if not on a call. Today, at 4:51 I got a call. The call required a translator. Translator calls always take at least twice as long. I did not log off until 7:04.
And speaking of calendar-related issues, China has come through this April in a stellar way! This month we get to treat Sunday, the 7th, as a working day thanks to the Tomb Sweeping Festival, and Saturday and Sunday, the 27th and 28th, as working days thanks to May 1st through 5th being the Labor Day holiday. For those of you who forgot to count, that makes a nine-day work week at the end of the month.
I paid a service provider yesterday via Interac e-transfer. But I mistyped the email address and they never got it. I corrected the mistake and sent it again. But I noticed that my account was debited for both transfers, including the failed one.
I called the bank’s support line and they said the failed transfer will be refunded in 5 to 7 business days.
What total bullshit, and completely wrong! First of all, if you do nothing, a failed transfer expires in 30 days, not 5 to 7. Secondly, some quick Googling that literally took me less than about a minute showed that you can instantly reclaim funds from any pending transfer by … … … follow me closely here … clicking on the pending or failed transfer item and then checking the box that says “reclaim funds”. Which I did. And the funds were instantly reclaimed.
What the hell do they pay these totally useless telephone support people for?
