Ow ow, that’s the one where Mom had back surgery. May FCD’s work as well as Mom’s did! They’ve caught his a lot earlier than they caught hers; that herniated disk is among the reasons I can’t think back fondly about the high school years.
Moonie, re the health system, see, Nooner and me are from countries where there’s no such thing as “the wrong income bracket” to see a doctor. It’s called “universal health care.”
Preach it, sister! Call me a card-carrying communist if you will, but I prefer to live in a country where a medical emergency won’t bankrupt me!
Weekend is almost over and I have had to work on and off through most of it. Stoopid bosses who can’t figure out what they want for being blinded by their own ambition and jealousy!
Ouch for FCD - I hope this surgery will fix it properly!
I feel like TOTAL crap today. The past two days were spent moving stuff around the house and stirring up tons of dust. As a result I have huge allergy issues that are mimicking a weird cold. The first night there was sneezing galore. All day yesterday I had no voice and a minor sore throat but no sneezing. Today my throat feels raw and the sneezies are threatening to come back. I HATE dust.
Pie - just remember - “Dust is a noun, party is a verb” aka Dian Piav
ok -
Back about 4 weeks ago, I finally, with Wonderful Tenant, cleared out enough space in my den (for lack of a more accurate desciptive noun) so that the screen repair guy could get to the window. This inspired me, the following weekend, to find a place for my external super drive and finally upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4.6, which I had bought about 3 years ago. (between the time I ordered the software and it arrived, the integral super drive crapped out)
I cracked open the plastic, opened the box, skimmed throught the “Look at these great new features on Tiger” booklet, and popped the disk into the external drive.
Nothing happened.
I called my brother who, while not quite an über-geek, definitely knows his way around such things. We tried several different things, including verifying that the drive, in fact, was functional (which it is), but the Tiger disk would still not open.
So I called Apple. I had a long conversation with a support rep, explaining is much detail why I had this issue to begin with, and what I hada so far done about it. She promised to send me a replacement DVD and also the alternate four CD-ROM set. She said I should have them by that Wednesday.
By Friday, when I still hadn’t received anything, I was exhausted from the anticipation. I called Apple again. I told this second support rep the whole story, even though some of it was on his screen from the previous week’s call, and he said he would express mail the disks to me - I could have them as early as Tuesday.
When I got home Monday night, I was pleased to see a small package from Apple. I sat down, loaded the DVD and YAY! It opened. I followed the instructions, and got a never before seen (by me) flashing icon - a globe in a box. I had to unplug the external drive, shut off and turn on the computer, and start over. So I tried the CD-ROM. My computer did not recognize whatever was on that CD-ROM and asked me if I wanted to continue anyway. I figured that was probably a bad idea, so I popped the CD out and called Bro again.
After about an hour of troubleshooting, it seemed I was destined to not have Tiger on this machine. So I gave up and went to sleep.
In Tuesday’s mail was another package of DVD and CDs. But I got home too late to try anything. When I got home Wednesday, there was yet another package frm Apple - but this was a replacement disk for Final Cut Pro - which I had not asked for. (shrug)
I tried Tuesday’s disks, and tried all the different options that Bro and I had done on Monday - the only thing we were able to find out is that the globe-in-a-box meant I had to twek my P-RAM - which I did. But even though my machines were able to recognize and read the DVD, it never started up with Tiger.
Later today, after I’ve gone back to sleep for a while, I will call Apple again and see if they can’t suggest something. But I am beginning to believe that I will either have to have the integral drive repaired, and as long as they’ve got it open they can throw in a new battery (because they supposedly only last about 5 to 7 years - and this machine is at least 5 years old), or I’ll have to (sigh) buy a new iMac with 10.5 - which I have been meaning to anyway, but now I am looking at less expensive options.
I’ll let you know what happens.
Meanwhile

V
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’. It’s rainy and gloomy and will be all weekend. No pool time for da bear! On the plus side, my ‘mater, squish and pepper plants are lookin’ good! From the looks of the 'mater plants, I should have me a bumper crop. YAY! I like 'maters a lot.
Last night the new toy got “seasoned”, meaning it ran for three hours to get all the ick smoked out of it. I now need to get off my considerable behind and wash the racks, water bowl and woodchip drawer (that’s what it’s called!) and wipe down the inside of toy. Then it shall smoke up some chicken! I got folks comin’ over to eat rain or no rain.
Feel better Pie!
Here’s a trout and some chitlins for your bosses Dotty.
Have fun gt!
Rosie I don’t know what most of your post even means but the gist of it seems to be your 'puter’s sick, right?
Moonie even hintin’ that you might want to do a MMP on a certain date means you are obligated to do so. It’s the rule we don’t talk about.
Blergh! It’s 4:30pm and the temperature is still 42°C/108°F! I think our regularly scheduled afternoon trip to the park may be cancelled today, for fear of heat stroke!
Coffee is brewing and the sun is shining. I’m supposed to go to a friend’s house for brunch today, so I’ll have to get my hiney in gear, shower and prettify myself.
When I return, it’ll be planting and weeding again. The front yard is really beginning to shape up. If I remember, and my camera battery isn’t dead, I’ll take pics.
I am off the dig a trench sans back hoe (it’s not big enough to need a backhoe, but not small enough to call it a hole). Beautiful day for it.
Sorry to hear about the surgery, FCD and M.
Checking in late, for me… I woke up early with the dogs, but opted to crawl back into bed, where I snoozed for another couple of hours. **FCD **and I went to the Dr’s office to pick up his MRI report. We stopped at a flea market on the way home, but now we’re back.
The report stated he’s got “multi-level degenerative disease” - which makes me wonder if it indicates multiple surgeries, or if it can all be handled at once. He doesn’t want surgery, but he can’t handle 20 minutes in the car - that’s a life-limiting situation, especially considering we live 35 minutes from work and at least half an hour from most civilization. The Dr gave him a couple of recommendations for surgeons, and he’ll be calling them on Tuesday. Plus he’s sending a copy of the report to his last surgeon (who doesn’t do workman’s comp… alas) for a second opinion. So we shall see what goes from here.
It’s going to be hot, and much as I hate it, I’ll have to close the house and turn on the air, probably in a few hours. Not as hot as Dotty’s got  but hot enough that the humidity becomes annoying.
Plans for today - some sewing, some cleaning, maybe some yard work. With rain forecast for Monday, that will be my lazy day, I think. Tomorrow, we’ll be driving to Mom’s, sans FCD. The 100+ mile drive would kill his back. So he hangs with the puppehs and kittehs while we party.
flashes geek card Saw 'em both. Saw Terminator last night. I hereby dub it as good at T2. I know know the meaning of having a movie slam you back into your seat (edge of the seat for me means I’m getting ready to leave.)
I’ve also determined that Complicated Roommate will be instrumental in getting Skynet online. He says he isn’t, but who do you believe? :dubious:
I’m gonna see it in 3D if I can. I was very impressed with Coraline 3D–the glasses and technology have improved exponentially from those cheap paper blue/red glasses you used to get in magazines. Speaking of…
I got myself the Coraline game for the Wii last night as a present for joining the ranks of the unemployed. I put it in and settle back for spooky button game goodness. A screen pops up: “Please attach nunchuck to remote.”
Nunchuck? This game requires a nunchuck? Does it say that on the game box?
Yep, in the upper right corner in small blue symbols. :smack:
I don’t have a nunchuck. Back to the game store for me! Dammit.
Ok, new toy is impressin’ the heck outta me! In about 40 minutes there will be perfectly smoked chicken boobs and laigs. That’s three hours from loadin’ ‘em in and crankin’ it up! MMMMMMMM… gonna be so good! N.O.T. sallit, coleslaw, baked beans and corn on the cob shall be the sides. Ice cream cake from the DQ for dessert. 'Twill be a feast!
Today I have mostly been in the attic. My friend came over earlier and we had planned to measure the space up there and then buy loft-boarding to make a solid floor so I can store stuff up there (yannow, all the crap 'im indoors has stashed around the house).
So up the ladder I go…having worked out that the access hatch does actually have hinges on it, and I am sitting up there looking around and wondering exactly what kind of headcase I am living with. There are boxes of stuff belonging to two previous tenants (who both moved out over 8yrs ago), an electric radiator, a calor gas heater, three guitars, a set of speaker-boxes and two stereos…and boxes. Lots of boxes. All empty.
Boxes that had computer bits in them, boxes that had video games in them (no sign of said video games, but the boxes are up there), boxes that held the phone set we got rid of before the one before the one we use now…I could go on, but I don’t want to think about it.
We did a run to the recycling centre with a portable black-and-white television, two speakers, a stereo unit, a load of boxes and pacakaging, and a bag full of plastic bags. And two binbags full of unworn t-shirts from the Nene Valley 10K Run in 1991. I kid you not.
Loft-boarding starts tomorrow! I am going to clean the dust out of the bath so I can get in it and soak off more dust.
We’ve been travelling quite a bit today. First an hour 45 min to a flea market, now we’re at an antique radio auction that we travelled 45 minutes to get to, next back to my house because I forgot my medicine, and finally back to tvland to see a concert downtown tonight. It’ll probably be over 200 miles when we’re done.
I repaired the tears in the sail cover and we installed the mainsail and put on the cover. By that time, **FCD **was really beat, so we came back home, with a stop for mushrooms. I’m gonna cook up a huge batch of sketties sauce. Yum!
House is closed up and A/C is running - it was starting to get too muggy for comfort. And it’s only May! I’m dreading summer already.
I just got off the phone with über-geek/patent agent/law student nephew who siad repair is not the way to go (his analogy was it’s like putting a brand new engine in a 15 year old POS) - but getting a different external drive with a firewire connection is reasonable as an alternative to a full upgrade of hardware and software - apparently I am 5 proceesing chips behind the times. I shall give it some thought and take another look at my budget after I pay my property taxes.
Howdy Y’all! I have managed some pool time. YAY! The water is coooooold though. The sun came out for a couple of hours and we went out and played. Now it’s all cloudy and lookin’ like rain again.
I grilled some hotdawgs and did some beer brats for lunch. YUM!! The yahdburd pieces are out of the smoker and in the slow cooker stayin’ warm for dindin. Right now it’s munchies time. Shrimp dip, cheese dip and onion dip with chips and crackers. Plus beerverages. The beerverages flow freely!
Even with ick weather, it’s turnin’ out to be quite a festive start of Summer partay.
Rosie even though I did not understand a word of your post, I surmise you need to update some 'puter stuff, right?
Gee, FCM, the trees here all decided to finally leaf out (or whatever you call it?) over the last week. Seriously, we’ve gone from no leaves to serious leaves in the space of a few days. It takes them a while to get going but they don’t waste time when they finally do. Also lots of really really green grass and dandelions everywhere and it’s so nice outside! And it’s in the 70s and nice and sunny and not humid at all. Nyah nyah. g Real spring is finally here! Summer will be along soon enough, and not last long enough, as always. Summer here is so nice that I wouldn’t mind if it were longer. Weird.
I’m sure that MamaTigs sends her hellos; she’s been working way too much lately, which makes for good paychecks but no time to do anything else, like sleep or play online.
I’m splitting dogsitting duties for my aunt’s dogs with a friend of hers this weekend. Unfortunately I ended up with morning duty. Though that doesn’t mean I have to be there at the crack of dawn or anything. It’s not like they’ll starve if they don’t get breakfast until after 8, even if they think they will.
