Dealing with sleeplessness in the MMP

Yeah, I had one of those nights. I’ve been up since midnight:30 and I’m exhausted. My usual fall-asleep tricks didn’t work, and it was too late to take melatonin and expect to wake up at 5.

Do you have any special techniques or tricks when you’re having trouble achieving slumber? Non-drug techniques, preferably.

<yawn>

Happy Moanday!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 54 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a little bit of rain with a predicted high of 58 and cloudy for the day. We have a cool down the next couple of days and then temps will warm up into the mid 70s by the weekend accordin’ to TWPTB. We shall see. On the homefront, round two of da cave make over commences later this mornin’. Also my meds get delivered via FedEx. Just livin’ it up in south Jawja I am!

This comin’ Sattidy is St. Patrick’s Day. Bein’ as my church is named for St. Patrick, we shall festivate. Sattidy evenin’ we will have a biiiiiiiiiiiiiig feast with corned beast ‘n cabbage, assorted root veggies, grilled chikin laigs (some folks don’t like corned beast, the heathens!), an adult bread puddin’ (with Jameson), a non-adult bread puddin’, and ice cream, cause, well, ice cream! Sunday mornin’ we’ll use traditional Irish hymns includin’ one that is attributed to St. Patrick, The Lorica of St. Patrick, google it if you wanna know. Sunday evenin’ we shall have a Solemn Choral Evensong featuring traditional Irish hymns and stuff followed by a festive reception. That should be enough to get St. Patrick all celebrated. Any of y’all got big St. Patrick’s plans?

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then I suppose I should purtify and await the arrival of the remodel folks and FedEx. Also figure out sump’n on which to sup.

Happy Moanday Y’all!

Dang! I knew if I attempted to start a new MMP there would be one up before me. Oh well, the mods will fix it I’m sure.

Plus, FIRST!

That’s why I always open another window to the Dope before I hit Post!

FCM, do you usually have trouble sleeping during the Daylight Savings switch? My sleep’s been erratic for the last couple of days but not full-blown insomnia.

My husband is an insomniac. The longest he can stay asleep is maybe 2-3 hours at a time. He’ll get up, maybe have a small snack, and do some light reading on his desktop. When he feels sleepy he’ll return to bed. Sometimes he’ll make himself a cup of instant coffee – it makes him sleepy – and he’ll return to bed soon after.

The few times I’ve experienced it I go downstairs and lie down on the couch. It’s much cooler downstairs, for one, and I’m very temperature sensitive when it comes to sleep. Sometimes one of the dogs will follow me down and curl up on the floor next to me.

I can’t blame this on DST. I’m inclined to think it’s payback for having a stretch of good nights when I slept thru. Saturday night, I had a tough time falling asleep, tho I did stay asleep when I finally drifted off. Last night, I fell asleep fairly quickly, for maybe 3 hours, and that was it.

Usually I can play a few games on my tablet, and that makes me sleepy, since the games are mostly mindless and boring. I also tried the relaxation technique - start with your toes and consciously relax all your muscles as you work your way up. That used to be the best way, but not last night. So this morning, I feel disoriented. Maybe caffeine will help…

This is my non medicinal technique when I can’t get to sleep;

First, lie NOT in the position you most comfortably sleep in. So, for me, I usually sleep on my side, so I start lying on my back.

Second, fling off all the covers, except the sheet.

Now, you lie in this, less than ideal, sleep position, without covers, until you are cold and feel you can’t lie in this position another moment! Then, in one smooth motion, shift into your preferred sleep position AND pull the covers over you.

I find being in my fav position plus warming up from a chill a combo that usually sends me off to sleep very swiftly. Try it out!

First!

But before the corned beef, cabbage, & green beer, beware…of the March Ides!

One time I had to do work in South Boston in a supermarket around St. Patrick’s day. I could deal with the red corned beef, but they also had brown corned beef. Think a prop from ‘The Walking Dead’. Umm, no thanks…

Bread pudding with Jameson’s sounds delish. I will do carryout for my corned beef. It kinda makes me sick to look at it raw so I won’t cook it. I’m assuming Chicago will dye the river green.

I hate DST. It’s dark in the morning and light in the evening. I’m a morning person so this just messes with my body.

Happy Moonday!

It’s cloudy and cold outside.
I don’t need to go anywhere today, so the cold is not a problem.

I overslept this morning, woke up four minutes before I needed to log in to irk.
I have several alarms set and I slept through all but the last one.
I could blame it on the time change, but I know better.

I wish I knew a good way to deal with sleeplessness, FCM. If I ever figure it out I’ll share it with you.

No St. Patrick’s Day plans here, Swampy
It was never much of a holiday for me, although I do like corned beef and cabbage.
I have friends that go all out for the holiday, dressing up in green costumes and going to their favorite bar. Not my thing. I’ve been invited but the bar is hours away, down the ocean, and I’d have to get a hotel room, and I’m not really into drinking and hanging out with a bunch of drinkers, and it’s expensive and I’d rather do other things with my money.

I never did anything for St. Pat’s day. This year will be no different. I’m not a drinker and my ancestry is 100% Polish.

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but my Dad worked for a family company - and they were of Irish descent. So he’d go to work wearing a red shirt and his “Thank God I’m Polish” button. Always the comedian…

Blurf. I didn’t sleep well either but at least I don’t have to irk today excepting housework. Always housework. It did rain really hard most of the night. We needed rain. Plus it is still cloudy out so it may rain some more.

Happy Moanday.

I have no trouble falling asleep, but I have had problems staying asleep for years. Here are some of the things that I’ve learned and work for me:

  • Our perception of time is very bad when we are in bed. We often think we’re awake for hours, but in actuality it is shorter or we are dozing on and off. But we don’t realize when we are dozing, so we think we’re awake for the whole time.
  • Just lie there and rest. Even I wake at 4 and feel like I’m awake until 7, by just resting in bed I get up refreshed.
  • Listen to non-structured audio. My trick is youtube yoga videos. They are calm and don’t have any particular linear structure. Because there’s no plot or anything, I don’t get involved in the story and I don’t notice when I doze on and off.
  • Occasionally take 1 benadryl. Don’t take it all the time or it loses its effectiveness
  • Occasional use of an herbal remedy that is available in some states.

For me, the trick is to just realize that my sleep pattern is like this and to just go with it. I will still get most of the benefits of sleep by just relaxing and resting in bed.

Nothing planned for St. Paddy’s day here; they used to have a parade in St. Louis that I went to now and then, but not since then.

I usually sleep well at night, but I’ve found myself napping during the day much more than I used to, which leads me to staying up late (went to bed around midnight Sunday) but I then sleep in to 7am or so, so I do get my rest. When I worked it was in bed by 10:00pm and up at 5:15am.

There is sunshine outside today, but still cold (37F) this morning. Rain may have gone away until next weekend, but hopefully it’ll start warming up.

I look at the clock, even tho I really shouldn’t. There have been times when I’d have sworn it had only been a few minutes since I’d checked, but by the clock, 2 hours had passed, so obviously, I’d slept. Unfortunately, last night that wasn’t the case. Even when I tried to not look, I’d end up looking. For some reason, I was wired. My brain wouldn’t turn off and my body wouldn’t surrender to rest. Tonight will be a melatonin night for sure.

Meanwhile, the morning is dragging. I’ve gotten a fair amount of work done, but I feel like lunch is way overdue. Nope… I’m giving serious thought to going home early.

I made up for some lost sleep night before last overnight.I’m off irk today, so’s I could sleep in to my heart’s (or bladder’s) desire.

As for St. Patrick’s day, Sis will likely be here the day before and the day of is NaNoCon. That’s an all day thing and I’ve volunteered to help with lunch sales too. Today, I have to go buy an air mattress and mail a couple of cards. There were a few flurries last night according to TWPTB, but it was just cold, wet and windy this morning. Ma Nature, you’re drunk, go home!

Dad had to stay overnight at the horsepistol again but should be sprung sometime this afternoon. He’ll have to be on a liquid diet for a week or two until his infection clears up and repairs can be made. I know his dog will be happy to see him.

Bread pudding with Jameson’s sounds delish. I will do carryout for my corned beef. It kinda makes me sick to look at it raw so I won’t cook it. I’m assuming Chicago will dye the river green.

St Patrick’s day is my anniversary, this year makes five! We will be celebrating with friends at the castle in which we were wed (AKA The Scene of the Crime.) Afterwards we will hie ourselves off to the local high school to watch my former flower girl perform as Chalava in Fiddler on the Roof. Raise a glass of green beer in our honor, if you would, please.

This can’t be right. Usually Moomm has posted 5 times by now. Hmmmm. I am slightly worried.

Off in a little bit to a meeting a 'Beamer’s school. I hope to take 'Beamer to school with us. Fingers and all appendages crossed. Following that we shall pick up the Suburban. It turned out to be (they believe) loose battery cables.

No plans for St. Pat, although he’s always been a favorite of mine. My grandmother was Irish and we did more for the day while she was still alive. Now, not so much.

Thus begins the week.

ETA: Happy Anniversary NotherYinzer!
