Dexter 11/11/07 -- open spoilers

It’s easy to forget, though, that DOAKES IS RIGHT. 100% right about Dexter in every way, has been from the beginning. I can’t see how he’d “deserve” to be locked away in jail as the Bay Harbor Butcher. As much as that character is wrapped too tight and needs some help, I still think you have to keep in mind that he does have a point.

Also, Doakes is way too impulsive and short-tempered to be a methodical serial killer like the BHB. Not his style at ALL. I can’t see Lundy falling for that.

my guess - Lila will figure out who Dexter is, realize that Doakes is about to discover the truth, Lila grabs Doakes to kill, but good ol Dex saves him - and offs Lila. Doakes is either too injured to come back to the force, or is semi-convinced that Dex may not be the bad guy after all. Either that of she goes after Rita. Still haven’t figured out who they will consider the butcher.

I thought for a while that Dex might come out of the closet for Lila, but not any more.

It’s interesting that the writers are putting Dex the serial killer on a higher moral plane than Lila. Somehow her behavior is more disturbing than his, which is quite an accomplishment.

I think it’s because she’s a meth-head, with all that entails. He’s a person who has actively been trying to redirect his darker urges and curtail them, dealing with them in as controlled a way as possible. She just gets off on hers and is totally selfish and self-absorbed. Dexter wouldn’t hurt an innocent person, or a kid. Lila would, and who knows, but the end of the season, she might. She has no moral code; at least Dex has Harry’s, and is developing his own.

True, all of that. Good analysis.

Yeah, but I hate that kind of moral certainty with absolutely no evidence. It’s almost a coincidence that he’s right. Anybody who gave off bad “vibes” to him would be in deep shit even if they were totally innocent.

We’re rooting for a character who’s killed some two dozen people who we know about. Dexter deserves to be locked in a tiny cell for the rest of his natural life. This show is in no way about people getting what they deserve.

And compared with what happens to Doakes in the books, being locked away forever is not that bad of an alternative.

Since, TTBOMK, they are not following the books, care to share/spoiler?

In the second book, the squad is pursuing a nutter from Doakes’ past who mutilates people to death. Cuts off hands, cuts out tongues, cuts off eyelids, etc. until they die. Doakes has completely tumbled to Dexter but before he can expose Dexter the nutter gets ahold of Doakes and amputates his tongue and hands. Doakes knows Dexter’s secret but is permanently unable to communicate it.

Oh, that would be fun…

Otto, with respect to your spoiler…

Surely there are a myriad of other ways to communicate it. He could type it out with his nose or something.

Exactly, which is why Dex will be triumphant and Doakes perpetually frustrated. It’s kind of a Valjean/Javert thing… or maybe an Ahab/Moby Dick thing. The reason we are rooting for Dex and not Doakes is that, despite being right, Doakes just utterly lacks personal appeal. He’s just a raging bull, not a whole lot more.

I’m pretty sure Doakes died in the second book. It was the FBI/CIA agent – Debra’s boyfriend – who was left alive after having an arm and leg cut off.

Nope, Doakes makes an appearance in book 3.
As what, a doorstop or a sandbag for a hurricane levee?

No, don’t say, I haven’t read it yet.
I too, can’t see why this would be a permanent state of inability.

I mean, they could tape a pen to Doakes’s stump, if nothing else. You’re convincing me that these books aren’t reading. Is there something more to Doake’s condition in th book that you haven’t mentioned? 'Cause that just doesn’t cut it – even if nobody thought to ask Doakes or help him, he could figure out something like walking onto a beach and spelling out a message in the sand with a foot.

boyo jim, think “screaming pillow”.
