Is this the third “something happened on the SDMB that I don’t grok and I think we should discuss if maybe it’s because Jews get special treatment…” thread in ATMB from the OP, or just the second?
Well, I gotta say, this makes mac_bolan00’s extensive participation in the Tiger tank thread seem a little creepy.
Wait, wait. There’s a bar here?
Anyway, we have racists and anti-Semites all over this board. They’re annoying but tolerated. He got banned for being trollzilla, and good riddance. In my happy universe, all racist comments would be grounds for warning (I know, I know, I’m pretty much the same thing as Hitler killing the First Amendment), but I’ll take what I can get. I’d settle happily for banning anyone who serially hijacks any thread about race to grind their racial superiority axe. But I’m asking for too much again. Peace out to mac_bolan. His comments were so ridiculously inflammatory and pointless that they couldn’t be mistaken for an attempt at serious discussion, and so he gets the boot. Good enough for me.
Huh. And all these years I’ve been BYOBing it. BTW, I like salty vodka. Just in case anyone’s wondering what would make my holidays happy.
Moses on a pogo stick, how did the guy survive here even 2 seconds after posting something like that!?
He wasn’t banned for any single post, but I’d have been happy to ban him for the Zyklon-B thing alone and I think that would’ve been entirely defensible.
Really? Although I agree that it is an ignorant statement, I wouldn’t think it would generate an insta-ban.
The zyklon-B comment wasn’t “ignorant.” It was straight up hate speech.
Usually people like him hang themselves if you give them enough rope.
That’s exactly what the zyklon-B comment was.
One thing I’d like to make clear. To me, zyklon-B isn’t the issue here. Jews aren’t the issue. Yes, jews were killed by the germans with zyklon-B, but so were Poles, Russians, and anyone else the Germans deemed undesirable. They were also killed by methods other than with zyklon-B in mass numbers. Bullets were a favorite, along with starvation, working someone to death or any of a number of different ways.
While other people were killed in the Holocaust, the vast majority were Jews, who were a particular target. And the use of Zyklon B in gas chambers is considered particularly emblematic of the methodical nature of Nazi atrocities. So mac_bolano00’s reference was designed for maximal offensiveness. Because of that, I also would have considered that grounds for an insta-ban.
Not just presumed Jewish. I had discussed my perspective as Jewish. He knew what he was doing.
Sorry, I didn’t read through every post in the thread, so I was not certain if anyone had previously specifically identified themselves as being Jewish.
Anyone else get a bizarre, rambling PM from him talking about how he WAS a member of Stormfront, but he didn’t know what the “White Pride” thing was all about? Or something like that?
That would be interesting, since in the thread he denied knowing what Stormfront was (as he denied knowing what “yid” meant).
Just so I’m clear on this - he was banned for sock puppetry and hate speech, not vanilla anti-semitism or plain racism. But I’m assuming this would have been a suspension, not a perma-ban, if not for the Lambchops act, just like it is standard for anyone else. Is that right?
Or is hate speech now an insta-ban thing? Not that I’m planning on going on an antisemitic, Klan-praising, Asian-bashing, Mexican-hating tirade any time soon, but it is [del]Christma[/del] The Holidays and eggnog goes straight to my head.

I’m under the impression that anything can get you insta-banned if its severe enough. They don’t have to offer you suspension before banning you, or am I wrong about that?

As the announcement said, he was banned for trolling and hate speech. Both those offenses are potentially insta-bans, but this depends on the severity of the offense. In less severe circumstances, they could garner a warning or suspension.
Socking can also merit an insta-ban, but in this case mac_bolan00 created the sock after he was already banned. It was just another nail in a coffin that was already in the ground.
I would have guessed he would have tried registering as mac_bolan01, but he used something different.![]()
In at least American usage, anti-Semitism has the specific meaning of ethnic prejudice against Jews, or against the anti-Semite’s misperception of Jews. Judaism as a religion is a very minor part if at all relevant to it. Like homophobia, it has a specific meaning not obvious from its apparent derivation.
Oh, I absolutely agree. However, the question wasn’t about the derived word anti-Semitism, but the root word Semite.

Okay, so just to be clear: he made a reference to Zyklon-B, and then called someone a “Yid”, and then edited the latter to “Semite”.
Do you believe that he initially was speculating that the person he was speaking to was Jewish, but then changed his mind and decided that it could be one of the other Semitic peoples? Or do you believe he changed his mind, and then decided to speculate that the person he was speaking to was perhaps not a Jew, but maybe a native speaker of Amharic or Aramaic? Because regardless of the dictionary definition of the word “Semite”, I thought there was just one plausible interpretation of his use of the word, so I’m not sure why there’s any need to discuss its formal definition.
I didn’t, but I am very curious as to what he said in that (mainly because I think it’ll make me laugh)
Can you post that PM here?
He’s no longer here, so sure:
stormfront
it just so happens i’m a member of that board, as a guess. am neither a sustaining member, nor a contributor. i was just curious about these so-called “white pride” people. haven’t visited that site in nearly a year.can you shut up now?
Extreme White supremacist racists usually fall into two catagories in my experience. The good ol’ boy redneck militia type, and the slightly more cerebral neo nazi type.
I had mac_bolan pegged as the second almost immediately. The signature is the constant INFERRING of disgusting racial beliefs but never owning them, and backing away and arguing minutiae when called upon it. Almost all neo nazis are incredibly dishonest (other than the whole being a racist by definition thing), and incredibly cowardly. They rarely lay it all out on the table what they ACTUALLY believe, but try to float their stupid ideas around in a thinly veiled way. I didn’t engage him much but I saw him slowly making his true disgusting beliefs more obvious.
No one can play dumb like a neo-nazi, they have it down to a science.
The only good reason one might have wanted to wait to ban him would have been to do it on December 20th; the first day of Hannukah.

I posted this: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=14521994&postcount=50
A long conversation ensued about Jewish point of view about being wished Merry Christmas as well as other things. Much of the conversation surrounds Jewish attitudes though.
Here’s the zyklon-B, when it’s clear lots of Jewish people are posting: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=14529829&postcount=232
Other people complained immediately about that post and I then indicate that my folks are holocaust survivors so this was particularly nasty to me, especially sine the conversation was Jewish-centred: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=14530278&postcount=245
Discussion ensues in which I reject his apology. He then begins his decline, telling someone that he likes them better because they’re not a Jew, uses “yid” (but quickly edits it- yid is derogatory when used that way (as opposed to when actually speaking in Yiddish) and it just keeps going from there. Like this beauty after he was moderated for the zyklon-b comment: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=14535050&postcount=354
Missed edit:
The “semite comment” was directly to someone who he thought was Jewish: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=14538347&postcount=384
I got some of the chronology not quite right (in the above post) and missed time to edit it. But the overall meaning is pretty clear- he knew who he was talking to, he knew he was really offending and he ratcheted up as he went.
To be fair, it’s entirely possible that Mac wasn’t a genuine racist, just one of those trolls who think playing the racist is funny. On the other hand, he had the ducking-and-weaving, just-asking-questions, I-never-said-that pattern of the modern scientific racist that rogerbox mentions.

Well, if he was truly an anti-semite or doing really excellent impersonation of one boils down to the same effect in the end.

I actually picture him as a 16 year old in his parent’s basement. Maybe troll, maybe really racist doing the JAQ thing, but really truely dumb.
