It was originally (months back). That didn’t work. So, I’m trying a new method.
Fuck it. Go ahead dissenters, dissent. The board will continue breaking (slowness, database errors or just all-out outages) and soon, if you’re lucky, it won’t be here any more. It’ll break one last time and Ed Zotti will finally feel that it’s not worth the money to fix and keep running.
I suppose I’ll find other things to worry about. No one here seems to give a shit, why should I?
Why? Because he’s bitching about his area of expertise? You can see all my ball bag whining in the thread about 120$ for a Ford key.
If you can’t bitch about what you know then what the fuck? I’ll bet Dudley has every slack jawed tard steak in his building bitching when they can’t get a screen. Face facts. A shit load off modern problems stem from not being able to do your job. Or better yet, trying to do it without the aid of computers. Kind of sounds like that chip key thing.
Sure, I’ve worked on and even helped build highly fault tolerant systems. While I doubt that your system NEVER fails, I can certainly believe that a mission critical system requires very high levels of up time. But the thing is, how much does it cost? In order to get all that fancy stuff you are talking about costs big dollars. You realize this, yes? I ask without snark as a lot of times my fellow IT guru’s don’t seem to grasp that all the shinny toys and cool stuff costs money…and lots of it.
The SDMB is NOT a mission critical app and they don’t have a very large budget from what I understand. This isn’t Yahoo! or Google after all, nor is it transaction critical financial stuff either…it’s a message board that is run on a shoe string and that derives it’s operating funding through advertising and some user contributions. We ain’t talking about a couple million dollar a quarter operating budget here with a NOC and alternative facility waiting to come on stream if there is a failure. We probably aren’t talking about multi-vendor T3’s (or T1’s) coming into multiple points of presence using multiple LECs either.
If you want all that stuff you should go on Wiki’s or Googles message boards…or Yahoo! or (shudder) AOL. This is the small time here…and I rather like it like that, personally.
Anyway, Merry X-Moose too all and too all a good night. Time for an(other) scotch and a nice cigar I’m thinking…
No, I’m afraid I’m in the majority of people here, who think you’re a sad, pathetic loser who has nothing better to do than bitch about the board’s performance. Just shut up and crawl back to your cave.
Y’know, I thought I was the resident User of Crappy Old Computers here, and I have used (too) many a machine that read cassette tapes, but I am both pleased that I never used an Apple with a tape drive, and sad that, despite that, I recognized the command.
Now I need an original IBM PC so I can try the cassette commands with it. Though it might not be THAT much more unpleasant that a 5150 with a single floppy.
ETA too late: Oh, and are some of you TOTAL PUSSIES? I grow sick of complaints about the boards because I know how much work goes into keeping it running. Especially since none of you assholes are still paying for it. Enjoy the times that it works well (almost all of them), wish you’d paid for a hotter connection for some of them, and live the fuck with the FEW times it sucks these days. Were you fucking HERE two years ago? Five? EIGHT? Then shut the fuck up.
I bet your typing accuracy was awesome. I took typing in HS, and had a fairly high accuracy in my class. However, what really, really helped me was typing in programs for my TI994/A. We did have a tape drive, as it happens…a cassette recorder that ran on batteries. We quickly learned that if the batteries were running out of juice, it was not good to record or play from that recorder.
Fortunately, that computer also used cartridges, which were simple. I loved that computer.
If I ran such a top notch place such as Dudly Do Right does, I would put out that info so all could come and actually see it in action and him in action. Why hide behind screen names when you are the top of the chain and the best at what you do? I would spread the word to PROVE I was what I say I am and do what I say I do…
This place is just like real life. I see it all the time when I’m out and about…
I am so proud that so many are willing to share their time and $$$ to help me with getting to the place they so want me to be…
