Wow, that was a deadly accurate simulpost.
Thanks jjimm. I know I shouldn’t let it get to me, but I have to admit that I was brooding about this last night. OpalCat hit the nail on the head when she said it remined her of Nazi propaganda.
While I’m almost hardened to Anti-Muslim bigotry in print from people like Anne Coulter, there’s just something about a visual caricature that makes one feel the hatred in a much more visceral way.
A picture says a thousand words, they say, and the sub-human depictions of Muslims in this tract say plenty. Nasty, nasty nasty.
I wish I’d never clicked on the link now. Maybe I should just grow a thicker skin and try to shrug this sort of thing off, but it’s still really depressing.
Not anymore!
Bwa-hahahahahahaaa!
Classic & disturbingly funny mental image!
I don’t know about Steven Speilberg, but that sure looked like my Dad’s first wife! I’m sure my Brother Robert will be glad to hear about her whereabouts recently.
Well, I dunno. This might have happened somewhere…
Right?
Er…?
Has it every occurred to anyone that Chick is trolling the SDMB, all without ever even subscribing?
He certainly seems to attract big enough BBQ Pit pile-ons with an easy frequency and you begin to wonder who drives the most traffic to his crummy cartoons. The SDMB certainly seems to be amongst his most avid readers.
Chick isn’t just hateful, he’s insane. Read some of his non-comic stuff and it becomes apparent. Here is a snippet of one of his books “Smokescreens”.
The Jesuits, the Illuminati, Opus Dei and the Masons? Of course! :smack:
I think it’s great, personally. I noticed that his site was lagging alot last night went I went to read the latest vomitting of hateful ink onto paper. I can guess at how much bandwidth for such a popular site loaded with images must cost.
Chicky and his breathren must be shelling out alot of money each month to allow the sane to laugh at them. Consider his near internet legend status, I’d be willing to best that most of the visitors to Chicky’s site aren’t going there for spiritual enlightenment.
Bibliovore, if I may presume to counsel you, I would recommend that you take the opportunity to read as many of these craptacular tracts as you can find time for. The naked self-serving commercialism in “Who, Me?” gives a useful insight into Chick’s more, shall we say, mundane motivations. The rest of them, when taken in large doses, evoke a bizarre and surreal landscape of hatred and intolerance that eventually becomes impossible to take seriously.
Whatever you decide, I wish you a speedy recovery from the experience of your first Chick Tract.
I’m glad he drew the Muslim adults so ugly, so I didn’t have to put too much thought into who I’m supposed to hate.
gobear, I don’t think you need to worry about a thing. If the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy is burning its half-billion dollar fuel supply through all cylinders, JackieC will be visiting the subject of gay marriage sometime right around late spring, 2004.
Well as one who is both Gay and Episcopal, if ol Jackie doesn’t do something about the fact that an openly gay Priest who lives in a committed relationship with a  MAN was Consecrated as a Bishop soon, I am going to be highly pissed. I mean, come on Chickie! You can’t possibly pass that up.
Maybe we could become the Great Whore of Babylon’s skanky little sister, or something.
I tend to think of it as punching a punching bag. It accomplishes little, but it’s the only constructive purpose the object can serve.
Personally, I kinda like frame 16. Uncle Salman…HAW HAW HAW!!
Notes on this one, and a couple questions:
-
Isn’t it sooooooo convenient that all the non-Christians in Chick’s tract are told about Jesus at some point before they die? Every single one of the anti-Islam tracts has that random Arab who somehow has come to be a Christian and meets up with the Islamic guy. Nice how Chick manages thereby to dodge the question of what happens to those who didn’t hear of Jesus under his theology.
-
Of course, the fact that nobody would be convinced to change faiths by one dissenting authority amidst the dozens of authorities the member of the local religion has grown up with doesn’t really deter Chick from expecting conversion. If one is already accepting religious argument from authority (a child, at least, could only really believe for those reasons), how Chick could expect a Moslem kid to reject the whole of his community’s authority for that of some random kid is ridiculous.
-
Seriously, I don’t think you could entice preteens to suicide bombing with the promise of virgins. They probably have some more coercive method of inducing children to do this sort of thing, threatening their family or something. Anybody know?

BTW, we often hear that Jesus is mentioned as a prophet in Islam. Is it merely in oral tradition, or is he in the Qu’ran as well? Do his supposed sayings line up, or is the portrayal vastly different?
You know what?, for some reason I´d LOVE to see a picture of Jack Chick right now, how very odd.
I don’t know the precise details but I do know that Jesus is regarded as the second of three great prophets (Moses being the first and Mohammed obviously the last). Basically the Koran says that Jesus was a prophet but that he was not God and was not resurrected (interestingly, though, Muslims do believe in the virgin birth). I IRC, it is believed that the New Testament represents a corrupted account of the life, words and identity of Jesus but other than rejecting any claims of divinity, I don’t know specifically which teachings of Jesus are accepted as valid or invalid.
I would imagine that Aldebaran could help us out on that.
That’s true. If we could get a straight unprejudiced answer from Aldebaran, that would be extremely useful. I would really like to know this, I’m extremely interested. My knowledge of Islamic theology is greatly lacking and I keep running into these situations where I suddenly need it for context.
Of course, Christian evangelism has attacked and put all the Islamic folk on the defensive so often that I can imagine why we often don’t get the straight-dope on Islam vis a vie Yeshua.
Yeah for Abdulla!!!
He’s such a good kid.
I want to create a Chick Tract zinger sticker. Basicly redraw the last frame and have it printed on a sticker. This one would say “and then Jesus said ‘just kidding’ and Abdulla spent forever with 70 virgins”
For those who were asking, Muslims believe that Jesus (peace be upon him) was one of the great Prophets of God. In the Qur’an he is called ‘Isa. He is also known as al-Masih (the Christ) and Ibn Maryam (Son of Mary). The virgin birth is clearly mentioned in the Qur’an and no recognized Muslim authority has ever disputed this claim. However, Muslim and Christian interpretations differ on the meaning of the virgin birth. For Christians it was the sign of incarnation, the coming to earth of the Son of God. For Muslims it was a special miracle.
Muslims also believe that Jesus (pbuh) is the Messiah, that he will come back to earth before the end of time, will restore peace and order and struggle against the Anti-Christ. I always get a lot of raised eyebrows when I tell Christians about that last bit…
