The Marines are technically part of the Navy, and I remember getting along with them ok-- mostly because we knew they could kick our asses. Except for the SEALS that is, nobody fucks with the SEALS.
Why Great Debates should never cross over into Cafe Society.
We just have the Armed Forces.
That’s an understatement.
Hey, don’t worry about it. I haven’t been pitted in months, I was long overdue.
Over the top? Absolutely. But that is what made it funny. If I actually thought for a minute that DtC were serious, I would have jumped on the shame bandwagon. That issue has been resolved here, but I write simply to point out that what I think led to the comment, and what has irked me no end about the marine in question, is the way he runs patriotism up a flagpole. He saluted Simon, of all people. A Brit. A civilian. He is on the show as a singer, not a fighter. So IMHO he should be heard through his voice, and if he wants to garner the sympathy vote for his patriotism instead of for the quality of his voice, then he should go on Donahue or something.
I feel better now, and no, I don’t hate the marines or Josh.
It’s not the first time he’s behaved like a jackass…

As a relative Newbie, I am still learning about the personalities of the SDMB regulars. Diogenes the Cynic is one poster I have run across numerous times, often in GD.
Generally, I have found DtC to be an intelligent and often provocative poster. While I don’t always agree with his positions, I find his style both interesting and intriguing, particularly his knowledge and opinions on religious matters.
In the time I have spent at the SDMB, I have grown to respect DtC.
But I must say, this thread has opened my eyes. My level of respect for DtC has suffered immensely. It will take a long time to repair that riff (not that it is necessary, mind you, to each his own).
I mean, come one, DtC actually watches American Idol?
Scary.
In case you couldn’t find it, here is what Dio said in that Virginity thread that Guin linked to:
However, I think you’re going a bit hard on him. He sometimes says things which he thinks are satirical or sarcastic, and people treat him too seriously. A few posts later, he said sorry:
Give him a break!
Has he apologized to Cessandra for telling her that having four children was wrong?
Or how all male virgins over 25 are nothing but fucking losers, and most women who are virgins are too uptight and no guy likes to date a virgin because the sex sucks?
[nitpick]
well they wouldn’t exactly be fucking losers…
[/nitpick]
Well, yes, I forgot about those ones, but I felt the comment I quoted was the most offensive. Still, I don’t think he really means everything he says… at least I hope he doesn’t.
Dio… come in here and fight your corner!
She said she had four kids at 22. I think that’s too young to have that many kids. So sue me.
I *did[/] say male virgins are losers, and I stand by that. I didn’t say “virgins were too uptight” or that “no guy wants to date them.” I don’t know where Guin is getting that stuff. I did say that sex with a virgin is work (based on my very limited field research) and that I didn’t find virginity to be especially virtuous.
Oh, and thanks, **samarm[/], I was busy rereading the virgins thread.
Did you bother to find out that two of her children are step children? Or did you just issue a knee jerk judgement without knowing the facts?
Knee-jerk reaction. (Sorry, Cessandra)
You know I think you may be right. That makes this kind of inflammatory posting even more wrong. I am not making accusations of trolling or whatever, I am just saying that perhaps it might be better to construct posts based on facts, personal experience or strength of conviction than always choosing the reply guaranteed to attract the most attention or annoy the most people.
I’m really not intentionally trolling when I post those kinds of things. I just have a warped sense of humor and not much of an internal filter. What seem like obviously facetious or satirical comments to me are not as obvious as I thought they were once i post them. IRL my wife has to tell when I’m just being offensive, but she can’t always monitor me online.
