The Marine Corps is a part of the Department of the Navy. It’s just a technical organizational distinction.

Just to muddle things up more, I didn’t think that marine critter was milking the patriotism thing. The saluting and shit is pretty typical behavior for some marines, impending war or not. He’s from around here, so the local press has covered him some. He doesn’t come off as someone who is basing his success on his military status.

Well, I’ll be damned. I didn’t know that. It was just the Dept. of the Navy when I was in (mid 80’s).

It differs because the suicidal(and vulnerable) person started the thread and the dumb comment was right in his/her face.
I’m not defending or condemning Diogenes, I just think that the above is not a very useful comparison.

I posted this afternoon that since it seemed we had cleared the air that this thread could be closed, but that post must have gotten lost in the vapors!
Heck, I’ve been known to have an…interesting sense of humor at times, too, but this just really got under my skin. It seems that olive branches have been extended and accepted both ways, though, so if anyone else has a complaint or grudge, kindly take it to your own sandbox.
Again, I’m not sorry for lashing against the specific comment, I take great issue with wishing ill on our servicemen/women, but I understand your intent and given that context, eh, bygones.

Well you should be. Diogenes was obviously being facetious, and has said as much. He also apologized (quite contritely, I might add) both in the original thread and in this one, even though your initial reaction to the situation was WAY over the top. Personally, I think you got off too easy; If I were you, I would leave well enough alone and not go back and say things like you’re not sorry.
Yeah, but that’s your issue. You misinterpreted a joke (albeit a tasteless one) as some sort of personal attack. You can’t expect everyone to tiptoe around you just because you have an issue with the service.
blowero, I’m pretty sure thinksnow doesn’t have “an issue with the service”. He was one of the few, the proud, the Marines. He himself has said that once a Marine, always a Marine.
Excuse me for not reading most of this thread, but I wanted to say that you were forgiven before you even made the comment. Most people make the same assumption you did, and I prefer to find it humorous than to be offended.
Well he said, “I take great issue with wishing ill on our servicemen/women”, when it’s pretty obvious that Diogenes was NOT doing so. Diogenes was simply making an offhand coment about a particular singer who happens to be a Marine. I don’t think that warrants calling someone a “Fucking Dickhead Asshole”, especially after they already apologized. If thinksnow missed the fact that it was not a serious statement because of his own personal feelings as a Marine, then that is indeed his issue. I’m curious as to why you think otherwise.

I take great issue with anyone wishing ill toward our servicemen,and has been noted over and over and over again, what is “obvious” to one is not obvious to another. Kudos to you for your superior observational skills.
At the time I posted the OP, he had not yet apologized and once he did, once he had made his intent clear even noting that he thought the comment might have been a bit much, I was over it.
I would be just as irked if I saw someone do the same thing again today. It’s my own personal feelings as an American, as a former serviceman, and as my own personal self, so yeah, it is my issue, and I said as much, but DtC and I seem to have reached an understanding and I bear him no ill will or hard feelings, so…what’s your story? Ease up, it’s over- the two parties directly involved have cleared the air.
