I went out on the observation deck of the Empire State Building. No windows to press my face against. But I did lean over the parapet to look down. My bf at the time wouldn’t even approach the edge. But years later he did ride on the roller coaster on top of one of tall buildings in Las Vegas to exorcise his acrophobia. He survived – mentally and physically!
I used to work on the 29th floor of Century Park North Tower in West Los Angeles, which is 44 storeys tall.
I also went to the observation deck in the Empire State Building, but my father had to lift me up to see. This was part of our family trip to the New York World’s Fair in 1964.
The tallest building I’ve been in was the old world trade center. And i was there on business, and didn’t have time to go to the top. But I’ve been to the highest tourist accessible part of every other large building I’ve been in, some of which mostly exist to create a view. (including the Empire State building, Boston’s Prudential center, the Eiffel Tower, Seattle’s space needle…) I enjoy the view from towers.
I’ve been to the Sears Willis Tower. The building is 110 floors, but the tourist deck is only on the 103rd floor, so I couldn’t max out the poll.
If all goes as planned, next week I’ll go up to the observation deck of the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai. That’ll be the highest I’ve ever been, by far.
Cool! You probably know that it was featured in one of the Mission: Impossible movies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDa-VvZGzcU
I’ve been on the observation levels of both the Empire State Building and Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower), and vaguely remember visiting but not dining at the Windows on the World restaurant at the WTC back in the day, in the North Tower, floors 106 and 107. My sister’s then-boyfriend worked there; he didn’t still on 9-11, fortunately: Windows on the World - Wikipedia
I feel a touch of vertigo when I’m up in very tall buildings like that, but I can get past it. My wife, however, absolutely hates being that high up.
Looks like that was the South Tower’s 107th floor (see about two-thirds of the way down here): https://www.911memorial.org/learn/resources/digital-exhibitions/world-trade-center-history/world-trade-center-facts-and-figures
Building sway - a pool sloshing on the 70th floor of a Melbourne tower on a windy day:
Yeah. I was about to warn suranyi to take some sea-sickness pills or something before he goes up there. “The building wocked and wocked…first to one side, then to the other, back, and forth, back, and forth…”
:: turns green and rushes for the bathroom ::
Have fun! It’s very strange to look down on the other buildings, kind of like the view from an airplane takeoff.
That’s so awesome for you. For me, just imagining being that high up gives me vertigo. I was wondering if anyone had been there. Looks like you and @Maserschmidt will share that experience. Let us know what you thought of it.
The highest floor I’ve ever been on is the floor just below the observation deck was at the original World Trade Center: it was too windy to go up to the deck, though some of my classmates wanted to see if they could talk someone into letting us go up. I’m also unsure which tower. Senior class trip, spring 1995.
It was kind of interesting to look out onto NYC, but at 17 & 18, none of knew more about the building than it was one of the tallest in the world, and had something to do with finance. Fast forward 6 and a half years…
I’ve decided to lighten up about polls with no questions, but the last one with all the random words left me completely clueless.
They were all captains.
TIL about Captain Carrot…
The rabbit or the Discworlder?
Oh. Thanks. I guess that’s a little obvious now that you point it out.
And what’s the question, again?
I would like to have the credits in alpha order by character name, because what I’m most interested in finding out the actor who played a particular part.
I tend to forget names almost immediately, so having character names in order of appearance works a little better for me, but it doesn’t matter a lot.
