Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

That’s true. But also, i have a bunch of friends who have probably read Mein Kampf for academic reasons. So if i saw the book in their shelf, with the other political and historical books, i wouldn’t assume they were Nazis without something additional.

I’d say that counts as further info. As does the fact that, being friends with them, you probably know some other things about them.

If they displayed it on their shelf (as opposed to in a drawer) I’d be more likely to think they were a Nazi or at least welcomed people’s suspicion that they were.

If they displayed it on a shelf, as in out there on its own or in some other fashion which made a pointed show of that particular book, I agree with you. If it were just shelved in the middle of 400 other history books, biographies, etc. I’d be inclined to think the person who shelved it had it for their studies; though I’d be keeping an eye out for other indications.

I’ve never really enjoyed going barefoot, even when I was younger. I’ve been a type 2 diabetic for the past 20 years, and going barefoot is generally not recommended for diabetics, due to the danger of complications from foot injuries.

So, I’m nearly always in socks, unless it’s the height of summer, and stupidly hot in the house (even with AC). In the wintertime, I’ll also wear slippers, as we have an older house, and the floors can get cold; slippers have done a lot to help me keep the skin on the soles of my feet from drying out in the winter months.

Barefoot or slippers. The house has some slippery floors that make socks dangerous.

I wear Crocs 24/7 unless winter gets a bit difficult.
Or unless I am on a vacation that involves a bit of walking.

I was very aware of who Charlie Kirk was.

Being told to salute a casket isn’t an illegal order. If it happened while I was in the Army I would have obeyed the order.

I like chili with beans. I prefer no beans when it’s on a chili dog. In New Jersey a chili dog will often have chili sauce rather than traditional chili. It’s like no beans chili but the meat it’s chopped much finer so it has more of a sauce consistency rather than like a stew. I prefer chili but the chili sauce is also good.

Growing up we had a big book with a swastika on the spine sitting on the shelf. It wasn’t Mein Kampf it was Shirer’s Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. Good book but these days I would find an edition with a different cover.

If it’s warm enough I’m barefoot. Within the last couple of years I’ve become a slipper guy when it gets colder. That’s due to the wife needing to buy me Christmas presents. Surprisingly I like it.

The last time I had a bunch of cash in the house it was when I won a bunch in a football pool. I kept the cash in my lock box and used that as my ATM until it ran out. Now I only have what’s in my wallet which can be zero or a couple hundred.

Sort of? The ceremonial units that work Arlington are recruited from the force with strict requirements. You do have to volunteer for those units. Once you are there you don’t get to pick and chose which details you work. It would be similar for other ceremonial units. I’m not sure where the personnel came from in this situation

“Cash reserve at home” is what we call house cleaner money.

Yeah, this is where I’d come down. If I wanted to read Mein Kampf (I don’t) I’d get it on Kindle or something. Or get a cheap copy and give it away after I read it. I don’t see what keeping it does for you unless you’re a Nazi-era scholar. How often are you really going to either re-read it or refer to it?

I like to eat chili with beans, but prefer chili dog chili to be bean-less.

Can’t wear socks at home because they’re too slippery on most of our floor surfaces. I’m getting too old to suffer self-inflicted falls.

I knew who Charlie Kirk was and enough to know he was a bad person.

What I wear on my feet around the house depends on the weather and on what I’m doing that day.

House cleaner money and mowers money; both groups prefer cash and it’s all the same to me.

Similar for me.
Lawn mowing money and handyman cash.
Also - a few fives and tens for donations to work events/gift purchases.

In the warmer months I generally go barefoot around the house. I also like to wear some double souled moccasins. If it gets really cold I have a pair of those slipper socks, wool with leather soles.

I no longer own Mien Kampf, The Communist Manifesto, or about 2/3 of the books I had when I had the space for them. The books I have now are, for the most part, super-interesting, lovingly curated, displayed to their best advantage, and absolutely no one who comes to the house looks at them at all except in the aggregate, even week-long house guests, who you’d think might pull a local bird guide or Bored of the Rings off the shelf.

I mostly wear oofos around the house. It’s an open shoe with a think spongy sole that has decent arch support. My podiatrist told me to use arch support as much as possible, but my feet tend to get hot and sweaty, so the least shoe possible that has arch support is my choice.

If I’m sitting, i shrug them off.

Wearing just socks is wrong in every way. Too warm, no arch support, and slippery, too. I don’t understand that choice.

We keep a few hundred in the house most of the time so we have cash to pay the cleaning lady. It’s not a reserve, but i guess i want it handy, not in the bank?

I’m not part of the anti-bean crowd; if I’m eating a bowl of chili I like beans in it. But if it’s on a hot dog I prefer no beans.

I go barefoot around the house during the summer months. During the winter months I wear slippers. I suppose if I had to pick I have a slight preference for barefoot, so that’s what I picked in the poll.

It’s true that I don’t use cash that much anymore, but I also was never taught that one should keep a large sum of cash at home for emergencies, so I also picked “other”. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of such a thing before this poll. As far as I know it’s not something my parents ever did.

I’m not actually sure what a bowl of chili without beans would look like. To me, “chili” means a dish of beans, seasoned mostly with tomato sauce and cumin (but probably also chili powder and turmeric) which probably has some onions and ground beef. Obviously, there’s a different dish called “chili” out there.

(As i am sensitive to the whole pepper family, if it features actual chili peppers more prominently, I’m never going to eat it. But I’m curious what it looks like.)
