Well, it looks like a sequel trilogy has been vaguely in the works for a while. I imagine that the ideas that Lucas has been kicking around for a while will coalesce into something set in the early New Republic.
Of course, the Old Republic era (setting of several successful video games) could probably be mined for movies as well. The Sith of that time don’t bother with that “only two” rule, and there’s that big war with the Mandalorians that would lend itself well to the action-packing of stories.
The starwars universe is probably a gold mine for them, if they are spending 4 bil on getting the franchise and are putting out three new movies, what do they expect to reap as a reward. My guess is that its in the trillions.
I wonder where this puts the planned live-action TV series. I am going to guess that this new trilogy may be based on those scripts; apparently 100 had been outlined or written or something (reports vary on the details) and they were centered around the criminal underworld - smugglers and bounty hunters and Hutts etc.
On the up-side, Disney is mercenary enough to realize the cash cow that the Original Original trilogy is and will finally release it on Blu-Ray. No modifications, no added effects, Han shoots first, everything.
Whedon is regrettably busy with the new Marvel-based ABC series and writing/directing the Avengers 2 until 2015.
Other choices? Brad Bird is a likely one. He already did write/direct Ratatouille and the Incredibles for Pixar, as well as staffed in the senior creative crew for Toy Story 3. So he’s a known quantity to work with for both Disney and Pixar, has experience in the animation industry vital to working with Industrial Light & Magic and credit with the geeks. It doesn’t hurt that he also branched out with Mission Impossible, which grossed a neat $700 million and proved that he could do live acting as well. Another hint is that his plate is clean on IMDB after he’s done with a project known as 1906 that’s in pre-production and may turn out to be vaporware.
