It says that Lucas said it will not be the Thrawn trilogy. It’s an original story.
Also the live action is still alive and as of last year was still a go and a Seth Green cartoon called Detours, about the underworld of thugs and bounties, is still alive and might end up on Disney XD.
Yeah I remember Abrams mentioning that on the DVD commentary and I thought his Trek film was excellent easily on par with any of the Star Wars films.
As for Whedon, Firefly has much of the rough charm of the original trilogy and Han Solo in particular could walk into the series. I have mentioned a few times that one of my dream films would be Whedon doing a Star Wars film about the early years of Han, perhaps with Lando. I never thought I would actually see it but now it’s pretty damn possible. Whedon has a mega-hit with Disney and Disney now has the Star Wars rights.
And I agree that Disney needs to think beyond 6-9. This is a potential gold mine that could last decades. There are lots of possible stories in the Star Wars universe and there is a whole stable of talented directors who can consistently deliver high quality blockbusters : Jackson, Nolan, Whedon, Singer, Abrams etc. All Disney needs to do is not screw up and they will have a franchise which lasts as long as Bond and is much more profitable.
I would love a Howard the Duck movie. I never read the comics so I don’t know if there’s a good story they could pull from but I’d definitely go see it.
Personally, I’m amazed the price was so low. Just from the movies themselves, they’ll probably make back their investment in a decade or so… But when you toss in all of the merchandising, probably more like the 2-3 it takes for just the first movie. Plus whatever value they can get out of ILM and the other technical companies.
Think about this? Instead of hearing the 20th Century Fox intro, you have to listen to “When You Wish Upon a Star” right before the opening theme. Blech.
Phantom Menace grossed about a billion, and it must’ve been the most hyped movie in history. I can’t imagine Episode VII will top that by a factor of four, even counting merc and advertizing tie-ins and the like.
Chances are pretty good for Disney to eventually turn a profit on the deal, but it’ll take several movies, and at least a few of them will have to be good.
I don’t recall hearing that before any of the Marvel movies. Possibly Pixar.
Disney does sometimes do their usual production logo, but if it’s not a straight-up Disney movie it’s usually just the animation done quickly without the sound. I’ve always thought it was pretty restrained and dignified whenever they did that.
But yes, if they do take away the 20th Century Fox intro, it’ll be sad. It segues so well into John Williams.
Yeah, I can’t imagine SW without the 20th Century Fox intro. Goddamn, I’m really becoming a fan snob. I guess it’s just the little things that make some movies, you know? Without them, it’s just not…right.
Releasing the original trilogy untouched on Blu-ray will make them back their billions within a year. If this isn’t already in the works, I think the Disney shareholders should sack the board for dereliction of duty.
I would love to have a nice hi-def copy of the original trilogy, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say “untouched” - Star Wars is practically unwatchable now as a direct transfer from the original film, because of the high visibility of the blue-screen “patches” behind the ships in all the motion controlled camera shots.
If you wanted to keep them out of the transfer without any jiggery-pokery, you’d end up with something so low-contrast that it looked terrible. I would hope that they will at least “restore” the film to eliminate these.
