Display Options in the Pit not saving

So with the recent problems loading pages (seems to have been solved now, eh), I’ve noticed that the Pit looks different to me; there didn’t seem to be many active threads.

I noticed that the Display Options at the bottom of the page was set for Last 2 Days. I set it to Last Week and then the forum looked like it had the usual couple of dozen threads. I set it back to Last 2 Days and the forum only shows 9 active threads.

After some checking, it looks like I have different settings for each forum. Cafe Society I show the last 10 days and I can see like 50 different threads on the first page. The Game Room I have set to display the last month.

It looks like what has happened is that somehow, the Pit is not saving the config for Display Options properly. If I set it for Last Week, leave the forum and re-load it, I will only see Last 2 Days. Every other forum seems to save the setting; it’s only the Pit where I see this behaviour.

I did try deleting the site’s cookie but that didn’t help anything. No else is seeing this behaviour?

Not sure why it’s not saving for you per forum area, but you can also go to the User Control Panel / Edit Options / Thread Display Options. There you can change the default or you can leave it with “System Default” which is two (2) days.

Hope this helps.

Thanks; I had forgotten about that page so I checked it. My Default Thread Age Cut Off is set to Use Forum Default. I have each forum set differently so that I see 24-30 threads.

So if that information isn’t stored in my cookie, does that mean it’s stored at the SDMB? Or does this mean the cookie isn’t being updated when that setting changes?

ATMB doesn’t store the setting either, btw.

I don’t understand what you think the problem is. You have it set to Use Forum Default and you’re seeing the forum default. What did you think you would see?

Each forum let’s a user choose that variable. This is then stored in a cookie.

Try it. Set a forum to display Last Month and it will always show you a month. It should not revert back to Last 2 Days.

My understanding (which could be faulty) is that when you use the drop down menu at the bottom of each forum page to change the filter for the number of days traffic that you see, that function only holds until you leave the forum, at which point it reverts back to whatever System Default you have set up – or, if you have not changed it in your UserCP, it goes back to 2 days.

What I would suggest you do is try to find a global default setting you can live with, and set that in your User CP. You can change it in an individual session if you want to see more or less, but it will go back to the system default. That’s the definition of a System Default.

One other thing to check:

Make sure that your bookmark (or whatever link is getting you here) is https and not http (note the s). If it’s http you can experience a lot of different issues, one of which is that various settings will not work consistently or properly. Usually the most noticeable symptom is getting logged out frequently, but setting issues are also a possibility.

This may not be the issue, but since it’s a possibility it’s worth at least checking it.

Thank you so much for helpfully defining System Default.

However, my experience has been and continues to be that the settings hold. I set most of these well over a decade ago and have never changed them. Only recently have I experienced this situation where that setting reverts, and it isn’t doing that in all forums.

Here is a list of my Display settings:

ATMB - Last 2 Days (should be Last Week)
Comments - Last 10 Days
GQ - Last 2 Days
GD - Last 10 Days
Elections - Beginning
Cafe Society - Last 10 Days
The Game Room - Last Month
Thread Games - Last Month
IMHO - Last 2 Days
MPSIMS - Last 2 Days
Marketplace - Beginning
The Pit - Last 2 Days (should be Last Week)

So my experience is and continues to be that that setting holds after leaving the forum main page, except for these 2 fora that recently began to revert to Last 2 Days.

I’m kind of incredulous that I’m apparently the only person who has messed with these settings and had them work the way I describe, too.

All the SDMB URLs show up as either boards.straightdope.com/ or https://boards.straightdope.com/ in my Safari browser. This Reply page is https, for instance but the forum pages, threads, etc. are showing up as just boards.straightdope.com. Manually placing the https:// brings me to the same page but the URL box deletes the https:// when the page loads.

THAT is something different. I’m on a Windows machine and Chrome browser and every page is https. AND any change I make to the posts I see from the dropdown menu on the bottom defaults to the System Default as soon as I leave the forum.

I did not see what operating system and browser you’re on but you should be seeing https on everything … so something ain’t right. Not sure how to make it right for you.

I’ve been having the same issues for a couple of weeks now. I also tried deleting cookies to no avail.

Is it Google chrome?

I use a Mac running OS X 10.11.6. I use Safari as my web browser. I just double-checked and yes, my bookmark is an https; every other navigation I do on the site is by clicking links.
