With Halloween approaching, the people at the shopping service Instacart have released what they claim is a state-by-state listing of the favorite candy in each state. Their results: The most favorite candy in 15 states is peanut M&Ms and in 33 it’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. In the remaining two (New Hampshire and Hawaii) it’s regular M&Ms.
On their map, if you ignore Hawaii, it looks like those bumper stickers following the 1972 presidential election, with the whole country red for having voted for Nixon and only Massachusetts discordant for having gone for McGovern “Don’t blame me – I’m from Massachusetts” (We ignore McGovern’s winning DC – the bumper sticker did)
I’m more than a little suspicious – only three candies are represented across fifty states? No Hershey bars or Twizzlers or Kit Kats or anything else? And almost all of the states only fall into two categories? I demand a recount.
I like Reeese’s, I admit, but I prefer plain M&Ms. Does this mean I have to move?
This shows the problem with Candy Electoral College.
