Dopefest in Raleigh, Dangit!!

Muscle in? Muscle in?

Jeez, Smooth, I’dve sent you a personal invite, if’n I’d known you were still here. I’ve been MIA from here for a while, and so don’t know who’s still here and interested.

My apologies, and DO COME TO DINNER woman!
And all of you need to be noting in your respective calenders, that there WILL BE a “Welcome Zette Fest” in mid-Dec, so don’t forget it amongst all those Christmas parties you will be so busy with.

Ack, I’ll be out of town Nov 30. I also have to work the day of Decemeber 14, but I should be able to wing something that evening.

We’ll try to make the 30th - my parents will be in town for Thanksgiving and right now I don’t know if they plan to leave on the 30th or the next day.

December would work nicely.

 Yep aenea, just trying to keep afloat lately. Finally got things looking up some. Can’t wait for this to happen. It’ll be good to see everyone and can’t believe we are getting Zette here too. Woohoo. Meeting dopers November and December. Makes the holidays almost worthwhile.

Now I must ask:

Who the heck is stinkyfeet???

Sorry. I was reading both this board and another, and got my title names mixed up when I posted. Which for me is pretty typical.

Welcome Zette Fest? Awww YEAH!

You southerners shore do know how to welcome a Yankee!

Hey, kids. I’ll try to make this one also. I see nobody is talking about a location yet. Any ideas? If anybody felt like road-tripping out to little old Apex, I’d offer my humble abode for a soiree, but otherwise what are we talking, somewhere downtown Raleigh-ish? It does sound like fun, and I should be free, but only after 9pm or so if it’s on a Saturday night.

Hey, Zette, where ya from? I was born and spent my youth in the Binghamton area. But NC is where I’ll be living for a long time now that I’ve put roots down.

Hi Sig- I’m went to school at Windsor, and currently live up near the airport. I’ve never lived outside of this COUNTY, much less state, so this is very exciting for me!

e-mail me if you want to chat about it!: suzette100 @ yahoo.com

SIGMIESTER!

I live in Apex too! Help me find a place close by that we can all have dinner, please?

That Mexican restaraunt downtown is good, but I think, too small…

C’mon… You know that Onion Head Monster killed off Ape-X!!!

What about that Olive Garden that we were thinking about last month?

What about a place open like Jillians? Or even Rudino’s? That’s a little bit more north of the city, not much though.

Whoa! I had no idea all these people were from around here. Aenea, that’s really neat that you live here. I figured I’d have to explain to everybody where the hell I lived. I’m soooo happy in this town, that’s why I said I wasn’t planning on leaving. The only thing that could throw a monkey wrench into it is if my 5-year-old daughter gets bused down to Fuquay next year. We live less than a mile from Olive Chapel Elementary, but the year-round school vote failed. We’ll see what happens, but otherwise I love the town. The Rancherito is a great place, I can eat the chips and salso till I’m ready to fall over. But I actually was thinking of someplace like Jillian’s, but I’ve never been in there and I imagine it could be pretty loud in there. Bogart’s is nice but the bar is big and round, don’t know if they have big tables there as the floor is all divided up into cubicles. I’ll think about it and see if I can come up with a good place.

Zette: Windsor, eh? That’s not too far away from where I grew up. More specifically I was in West Corners, but I’m glad as hell my dad decided to move out in 1979. When I go back it’s pretty depressing, all my school friends are in nowhere jobs, etc. Where are you moving to?

Okay, I’ve done a little digging. I’ll throw a few out there:

Copeland’s - (Cary) <----- Excellent New Orleans food
42nd St. Oyster Bar (Raleigh)
Bahama Breeze (Raleigh)
Rumrunners (Raleigh)
Stonewood Tavern (Cary)
The Fox & Hound (Cary)
Darryl’s

Sig- West Corners, Endicott? My husband plays a gig there every weekend at The Topper Saloon, which may not have been there in 79. I’m sure that Phil’s Chicken House was, though! (right nearby)

DAMN it’s a small world! I’m moving to the Charlotte area- more details via e-mail so I don’t get any psycho stalkers, but I’d love to talk more about it! Woo!

Oh, and if there’s a Jillians in Raleigh, and I have any say at all over the “Let’s Welcome Zette-fest”, I just wanna say: Jillians rocks my little world. Like Chuck-E-Cheese for adults. Only with beer and smokes and such.

Let’s do Jillian’s for Zette’s Welcome Fest!
For dinner on the 30th, I’m going to 2nd the motion for Olive Garden (still haven’t ever been there), and cast a nay vote for both Bahama Breeze (expensive and very crowded, long waits at times) and Rum Runners (very very crowded and loud). Both are fabulous places on a date or just out to have fun, but not condusive to dinner conversations with the whole table.

Tir na Nog was kinda neat…
SigMeister, the Olive Garden is in Cary Crossroads, then we could adjourn to your house or mine for after dinner lounging. (though your house prolly has more furniture and no little babies to scream thru any guest conversation)

Rats! I’m going to be going out of town for Thanksgiving weekend then!

aenea, my apologies for briefly hijacking your thread — I tried an e-mail, but it got kicked back.

I feel your pain on the school reassignment issue. I just moved to Apex (from Cary) so that my kids could continue to attend Baucom Elementary instead of being transferred across town to Dillard. (We actually got a much nicer house at a good price, so we’re not quite as rabid people as that might suggest.)

Have you heard of Assignment By Choice?. We’re working on trying to change the system. Part of the reason Olive Chapel is so overcrowded is because the school system has resisted building schools west of Hwy 55 (even though that is where growth is), because that is longer than a 45 minute bus ride from downtown Raleigh, which is their limit for how far they’re willing to bus inner city kids. (Just think of the fun they’ll have out in Morrisville, where approval has been given to develop 50,000 new homes, but no new middle school schools or high schools are planned there within the next 6 years. Some of the kids who live on the Durham County line west of the airport are currently assigned to Broughton High School in downtown Raleigh.)

The public is welcome to attend the Cary/Garner Schools Task Force meeting this Thursday night at 7 PM in the Cary Senior Center in Bond Park. Public participation will be limited, but this should be educational. Also, I will be facilitating a “Voices & Choices” focus group meeting at the Cary Family YMCA on Thursday, November 14 at 7 PM, which will give you a chance to express your ideas about what the school system’s goals should be in the upcoming year (albeit in a very narrowly worded questionnaire format.)

If you’re interested in any of this, sign up at the Assignment By Choice website, or feel free to e-mail me with questions.

We now return you to your sociable thread

Sorry I’ll miss you all at the Dopefest. I’m hoping I can make it to the Zettefest…

Holy Cow, Zette! I grew up maybe 1/3 of a mile from Phil’s. If you went up Day Hollow Rd. and took a left on Martin I was at the corner of Martin and Leona Ave. Used to walk over to LWW & AGM when I was a wee one. And another weird thing is my neighbor actually went to LWW a couple years after me. Her dad and I love to get together and share stories about The Topper (yeah, it was open then, and always had a guys selling spiedies out front), Pat Mitchell’s Ice Cream, and Duff’s Pizza. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Sounds like we’re on for a ZetteFest at Jillian’s. I’m ready for it! When can we do that one? As for the DopeFest, the Olive Garden would be fine, but I suggest a good look at Copeland’s, they’ve got seriously good food and a nice atmosphere. It’s right down the road from the OG, in front of BJ’s and directly across from Jack Astor’s. It helps to like cajun/creole type stuff but they’ve got a few more normal dishes for the rest of the world.

YWalker - It never ceases to amaze me the number of experts to be found on the SDMB. I throw in an off the cuff remark about my daughter getting bused and you step in! That is so cool! I will come check out the website and figure out whether I can contribute somehow. When you said “We’re working on trying to change the system…”, are you actually in the school board or something? As for what you said about not building where the growth is, I’m not surprised. Buildings by necessity can’t be completed until several years after the growth study that signs off on the contract to build, and who knew a few years ago that the big boom would be out around Jordan Lake and elsewhere west of 55. I just wish the year-round thing would have passed, but it never had a chance in my opinion. I’ve got my fingers crossed for next year. We love Olive Chapel!

Okay, let’s hope I don’t make these double-posts a habit, but I wanted to say that having a little get-together at my house afterwords would be fine, Aenea. I’ve got a 5-year-old daughter, but she’s a ham and wouldn’t mind a little fun if she was still awake when we got in. I second the motion regarding Bahama Breeze/Rumrunners. I totally agree, they probably are loud, and surely we wouldn’t make it any quieter, would we?
