Dopefest in Toronto, anyone?

I just googled it and found http://www.saigonsister.ca/ .

But why does the source for that page have multiple references to gay porn? And it shows up that way in the google listings as well. Either someone’s messed with their page or they’re being deceptive.

Other than that, it looks okay.

I’m guessing that Saigon Sister is also a euphemism for transsexuals of the asian persuasion and / or for homosexual asians… I thought of registering a website as MessyEater as a meta critic site for restaurants but thought it might be mis-directed…

Gay porn? Yikes!

The restaurant itself remarkably gay porn free, actually… well, except that one time they brought me a giant dildo instead of the green mango salad by accident. But really, the kind of place you could happily bring grandma without a worry.

(no, seriously… it’s very decent Viet-fusion grub)

Friday or Saturday are both suitable for me. The rest of the week is somewhat haphazard, depending on whether I’m working downtown or in the Brampton office.

Well, just about everything can be used as a double entendre if you do it right, but that’s only because we are ape descendants with hot monkey sex on the brain. It shouldn’t stop you from going about your other business.

I just hate furtive or deceptive sexual stuff. It’s 2008, people. Gay marriage is legal. There’s no need to put sly references into the source text of otherwise-unrelated web pages. I simply don’t understand the mindset that illegality or illegitimacy, in and of itself, is attractive.

I think Saigon Sister closed very recently. I could be wrong, I’ll confirm tomorrow, but it would explain the website oddness. Shame, because I remember it being quite good.

I’ve never been to a Dopefest partly because I am poor with keeping a schedule and partly because I have always been a bit leery of meeting strangers on the Internet … but after my past summer’s online dating experiences, I think I’m pretty well inured.

So count me in!

I was just wondering about that… it’s not in the block that is being closed for the construction of One Bloor East, is it?

Ah, you’ve been though the wars too, eh?

Cool!

Nope, it’s on the west side, right across the street.

That whole corner is boarded up now. Goodbye Harveys and Toby’s and most especially, goodbye to Banana Leafs in Roy Square. Gone but never forgotten. weeps I will never be able to pass by One Bloor East without nostalgia.

Other random thoughts: If you want to avoid hipsters, I would strongly recommend against Little Italy, especially on weekends. Also Vietnamese restaurants have very slim pickings for vegetarians.

I would second the Chinatown recommendation. Also I’m always up for a good Korean BBQ - I don’t mind cooking it myself after paying them to marinate it. I don’t know what they do to it but it’s heavenly.

Well, if we’re going to Old Chinatown, what about Miss Saigon on the west side of Spadina across from and north of Anime Extreme? My friend said it was good…

Yeah, I miss Toby’s as well. My sister and I used to go there when she was in from Ottawa. I think it kinda lost its way about ten years ago, though; I remember going there one final time and being disappointed.

Oh pooh. You are correct… apparently they’ve been closed for reno since November, and the paper is still up in the windows. No word on when/if they will be re-opening.

I guess I was too distracted by the loss of my beloved Roy Square to even notice.

Sorry, yes, Toritos is more expensive than most of the places I was recommending.

I wouldn’t willingly go to Hernando’s Hideaway for food unless you had a gun pointed at my head (which sort of makes the “willingly” part moot), but most of the other suggestions I’m good for. That said, although Vietnamese is a weekly part of my diet, it’s not really a good choice for a big group (too little variety, and the restaurants tend to be busy and more fast-foodish in style).

Our list seems to be getting bigger, rather than smaller. In the past, I’ve presented a short-list of choices and we’ve just selected one of them. But, we’re essentially democratic here, so there’s no reason I should impose my own choices on everyone. How are we going to come to a consensus on this?

I think it would be a good decision to pick a date first. I know what days won’t work for me (i.e. most Saturdays) so there’s no point in voting if I can’t make it.

I think it would make things simpler.

I have a feeling that Saturdays would be good for most people. What Saturdays would not work for you?

Actually, any weekday evening except Monday and Tuesday is good for me as well.

I realize that Saturdays would be best for most people but my current schedule doesn’t fit that.

In fact, the real problem is that with my current job and other factors in my life, it’s next to impossible for me to plan a Saturday night more than two days in advance.

If Saturday works for everyone else then I’ll just have to wait and see if I can make it.

Well, I’m in - pick a date before March 25, and I’ll re-work the schedule if I can. You folks haven’t named a restaurant yet that I’d refuse to set foot in, so keep trying.

Just let me know where and when.

I’m pretty flexible as far as dates go - though if it’s a weeknight and I need to commute to the 'burbs in the morning, I can’t stick around for long. Though on the other hand, it’ll be a convenient excuse to make a swift exit if you all turn out to be Scary Internet People. Location and food are flexible too - I’ll eat anything that won’t out-run me, as a rule.

I even promise not to break out into hives if we end up someplace with lots of hipsters. I figure I must be developing a partial immunity after going to so many indie shows and Trampoline Hall lectures.

(OK, fine, I admit it. I’m really a bitter ex-hipster in disguise… my membership and collection of ironic t-shirts was revoked as soon as I moved east of the DVP.)

I want in! Assuming this is not happening the weekend of St Paddy’s as I will not be in the T.Dot (I only call it that because it pisses off Mnementh, who although no longer posting may also be interested) but going back to Montreal for my irish beer day.

What about Friday the 7th or Saturday the 8th of March?

Either date works for me. Saturday would be a little more convenient, but if that’s difficult for Kid_A, I can make Friday work too. I’ll note that that is a weekend I have my boys, in case that influences anyone’s decision…

I work until 4 pm on both of those days, but am happy to limit my participation to evening activities.

Doesn’t bother me. The question is, would it bother them?
