Dopers whom you have never met, but would like to

We’re a nice community here, and many of us have met other Dopers IRL. But who would you like to meet in person, if you could?

For me, the list would include:

@LSLGuy . Great source on aviation, and though I cannot fly due to my eyes, I understand the basics of powered flight. He clearly explains what I’ve experienced in the cockpit of my buddy’s Cessna 172.

@Johnny_L.A . See above, same reason.

@CairoCarol . Gosh, what a life, living in so many different places. And such exotic places. I’m sure that Carol has many great stories that she has not shared with us. Yet, that is.

@penultima_thule . Our friend from the southern hemisphere, who can provide valuable insights from a non-American point of view. I always pay attention when he has something to say.

@themapleleaf . Went to the same high school I did, though twenty years apart. We both have interests in music, and I like to think that I have taught him spoons. I don’t know what he has to say about that.

That’s all I can think of for now. How about you? Which Doper(s) would you like to meet?

Oh, and @BippityBoppityBoo . She humored me when I told her about Surfer Kitty.

And I cannot forget @Beckdawrek . I don’t think anybody can forget Beck, and that’s a good thing. Beck is what we needed at a time we needed her.

So many cool, smart, interesting people on this board there’d be too many to list. I’ll just mention a couple off the top of my head, but there’s many more I could add:

Though he’s no longer active on the board, @kayaker seems like he would be a cool person to hang out with. He always had great vacation stories and definitely seems to be enjoying his life to the fullest.

@Qadgop_the_Mercotan is just one state over from me, and he’s a member I have a lot of respect for and just seems to be a great person. When my wife and I went on a road trip vacation to Wisconsin last Summer I briefly thought of contacting him to let him know I’d be in the neighborhood, but I thought it might be a bit intrusive and didn’t want to put him on the spot.

Thanks and dopers welcomed when possible so call next time. But I will in Europe until june 5th.

Hooray for being well enough to travel after your recent travails.

Many, including those already mentioned. I’ll mention three more that come across to me as especially thoughtful, articulate, curious, and kind: @DavidNRockies, @ThelmaLou, and @Frodo. Oh, and I know I’d have fun talking with (and learning from) @CalMeacham.

@Spoons – I seriously hope the day will come when we will meet in person. I’ll echo your comments – it’s amazing how many interests in common we have.

I agree, it would be great to meet Dopers in person. I currently am not able to afford a trip across the Pond back to North America, but I will state for the record that I now permanently reside in Prague in the Czech Republic, and anyone from these boards who would be coming this way should feel free to PM me and I will see about arranging a get-together, maybe give you a tour of the city.

Who else would I like to meet in person? As a minimum the following people:

@Dung_Beetle - we both posted on another forum at one time before I came here. I’ve found a lot of her comments insightful.

@AHunter3 - we have a shared interest in writing and publishing. We also share certain socio-political views.

@Le_Ministre_de_l_au-dela - also from Canada, a fellow musician. Before my time here he also ran some terrific short story contests on these boards.

@Hari_Seldon - am very interested in his journey from the US to Canada and his entry into academia there. Also many insightful comments about days past.

@puzzlegal and I seem to think alike in many ways. Not only our opinions, but also the thought processes we used to derive them. Where we differ is minor things, and in those we’re usually diametrically opposed.

Would make for an interesting lunch date or time yakking at a dopefest.

Since you asked, I will give something of an answer. Should you ever stop in Montreal, I would be delighted to meet you. Of course, I am 89 so it better be soon.

I was teaching at U. Illinois in 1967 and realized that any male student who failed calculus would likely end up in Viet Nam. (I also realized that if I passed him, some other guy would end up there.) There was a meeting in Chicago over American Thanksgiving of people in my field and I met someone from McGill and just casually asked him if there was any chance of a job there. Later I learned that he went back and browbeat his chairman into offering me a job. Which I accepted and moved here in 1968. Fifty eight years later, here I am.

All of them really, if I somehow get filthy, ludicrously, rich suddenly, one of the first thing I’d do is to organize a super-dopefest and bring everyone together for a few days, all expenses covered.

That being impossible I’d still like to meet:

@ParallelLines who seems to be my twin from another continent, we need to finally hash out who’s the evil one.

@Dendarii_Dame, @dazednconfused and @Dung_Beetle to talk books, especially the Vorkosigan Saga and everything T. Kingfisher writes.

@Pardel-Lux for a host of reasons, and @Maserschmidt , @EinsteinsHund to watch the World Cup together and talk football.

Plus more than I can’t really list because the software will not allow me to.

And I will forever regret not being able to met @Polycarp and @Colibri

I’ve daydreamed about hitting Powerball and then hosting an all expenses paid dopefest where everybody is invited to some tropical resort.

So my answer is “all y’all”

(And while we’re there I’d want to compare biceps with @Dr_Paprika , @DSeid , @beowulff , @Galactus and @HoneyBadgerDC (and all the other gym rats!) while @puzzlegal shakes her head at the absurdity of it all)

@themapleleaf , @Frodo , I am honored!
I try never to post in these things, because the boring answer is I’d like to meet you all, but I have to say I’d include @aurora_maire just because of her contributions to the monthly photo thread. Speaking of which, how about @Mean_Mr.Mustard ? And also…no, I’m not starting!

I will attend your dopefest. Even though i will have to walk away as y’all compare biceps.

Sounds like a plan to me. I only have 16" biceps, but i’m working on it. 16oz curls on the beach should help.

I’ll post a photo as soon as I can take a decent one. No good mirrors in this house.

@Mangetout - At least as regards his YouTube channel, he’s like if Mr. Rogers were British and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood was made for adults. “I’m just going to walk along this beach and talk about this and that, come along or don’t, NBD.” I’d love to buy him a pint.

@Jophiel I’m pretty sure I met at a Springfield Dopefest, but if not, I’d like to buy him a beer. He’s from, or has lived in, Springfield, like me. Ditto @Thudlow_Boink

My fellow Botticellists --Prof. Pepperwinkle, Elendil’s Heir, kitap, De La Rue…

And Mumpers – FairyChatMom, The Stainless Steel Rat, Purple Horseshoe, scareyfaerie, Chefguy…

And bubbleheads – robby, iiandyiiii, The Tyrant…

The software tells me that the Dopers I most frequently reply to are @EinsteinsHund, @Frodo, @Chronos, @Treppenwitz, @LSLGuy and @kayaker.
There must be a reason for that. Probably more than one.

How did you find that particular stat? I’ve looked at my profile’s Summary page umpteen times. I’d never noticed that section on the right side if you scroll down aways. :man_facepalming: Thank you!

Evidently my fave interlocutors are @wolfpup, @Johnny_L.A, @Velocity, @Chronos, @Leo_Bloom, and @Dr.Strangelove.

Those last two have left the boards long ago, and late last year respectively. So hard to contact, and perhaps beyond contact.

The other 4 would be good fun to meet at a party, each in their own way.

@EinsteinsHund,@Pardel-Lux and @Dung_Beetle spring immediately to mind - I think they’re the three people I interact most with. A beer or two with you guys would be fine thing.. And the …intriguing world of @Beckdawrek would be irresistible. And while I don’t recall ever interacting directly with her, I’ve never read a post by @Ann_Hedonia that I didn’t enjoy.
