Patrician - Rickman
Carrot - Paul Gross - Seriously, watch Due South - he is already Carrot.
Granny Weatherwax - Maggie Smith
Tiffany Aching - Ellen Page ( from Juno - this is Cheerleading Dropout’s pick)
Nobby Nobbs - Alan Davies would be fine, but I can also see him as CMOT.
Angua - Eliza Dushku - She’s got the killer in 'er.
Can Pegg do Nobby? Nick is born to be Colon.
Maggie Smith certainly has the chops, in terms of acting skills, but her appearance is all wroing, I think. Weatherwax is known for her smooth skin, lack of warts, wrinkles, squints, etc. Maggie Smith is a bit, well “crone-ish”… imho…
Pegg is pretty tall (or at least looks it), but with some clever manipulation I think he could possibly pull it off. He does lean toward deadpan straightman humor more than the bright-eyed tongue-in-cheek innocence Nobby prefers.
Ever see Eliza Dushku and Kirsten Dunst side-by-side in Bring It On? Kirsten’s the only one with a, well, blonde bone structure. (But she wouldn’t do for Angua, it calls for someone taller and tougher. A blonde who could be cast as a Valkyrie or as an action-heroine.)
No, his inflection is just not . . . dead enough. Not flat enough. Death should make the Star Trek computer voice sound like overacting.
Who’ve we got so far for Nanny Ogg? That’s got to be the funnest part an actress could ever get!
Miriam Margolyes? {sp?} I think Dawn French could pull it off pretty well; I’d love to see what she and Joanna Lumley made of Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax, though.
How about Tilda Swinton with a grey wig? Typecasting, I know, but she can pull off “imperious” in her sleep.
If we are casting Doctor Who alumni, Carey Mulligan/Sally Sparrow is pretty much a lock for Polly Perks.
I get what you’re saying, but I was thinking of Piper’s ablility to pull off a sense of, mmm, slight alienation, a little anxiety. In The Art of Discworld, Sir Pterry said he what he liked about Kirby’s drawing of Angua was that it looked like she was always prepared to flee. She is, after all, partially a wild animal; and what do most wild animals do when they are surrounded by humans?
Piper showed that quality in “Stolen Earth/Journey’s End”, as well as the ability to prod buttock. “D’ye like my gun?”
As far as Gillian, I was thinking that she has Susan’s anger.
Carey Mulligan could also be a good Susan, as well as Polly Perks.
Angua needs to be someone tall and quite strong-looking; Billie Piper doesn’t fit the bill.
And in the X-men comics Wolverine is something like 5 foot 2 and the short jokes have flown for decades, but they still got away with casting a six-footer in the movie role.
A good actress could be a convincing Angua and it wouldn’t matter how tall she was - she’s a werewolf, she doesn’t have to be big to be a strong action-girl.
Maybe Hannah Spearritt from Primeval as Angua? She’s short, but has an edge to her.
So, Miranda Otto, then…
Some characters can get away with changing their appearance more than others. Personally I don’t think it matters what hair colour she has, for example, but I see her as long-legged and Amazonian.
I predict that whoever does end up playing Angua will be tiny and fragile-looking. Ever since Buffy there seems to be a trend for this in all those kick-arse female roles. That’s part of the reason I’d like to see someone tall and fairly strong in the role - it’d make a change from the norm.
How about Piper Perabo? She’s proven she can do the action-chick thing (Covert Affairs) . . . and she does always look like she’s prepared to flee.
Denise Richards.
Yeah, she could possibly work. I think she could probably do ‘steely.’ Actually, that’s my main objection to Billie Piper - far too nice. She could be nasty if needed maybe, in a manipulative way, but I can’t see her doing steely. Like she could give you a certain look that makes you envision being eviscerated, but she hasn’t actually moved a muscle. Granny Weatherwax could do the same if in a really bad mood, but for Angua it would be instinctive.
Or just a cardboard cut-out of Denise Richards. Lower cost, same acting ability.
