Four and a half o’clock, and corned beef & cabbage has been ingested. I went back for some more cabbage (total: ⅓ head) and half a potato. No Irish whiskey, but I did have a little bourbon. I’m finishing a Guinness.
there’s quite a few here in Metro Detroit, seeing as how we’re just across the river from Windsor and Detroit is Hockeytown. If not sure why that is a thing, Tim Horton was a hockey player in Canada. One of our IT guys swears by Tim Horton’s coffee. I gave him Tim Horton gift cards as a thank you for all his help with my computer issues.
Was notified today that I’ve been transferred to a different division in same department. I’m fine with it as I can walk to work now, just 5+ blocks from home, about 1/2 mile versus 4.9 miles to former office. And the young man (29) who is the supervisor is a pretty good guy who needs some mentoring/training and I’ve been selected to be the one who does so.
Forgot to mention in the other post that my Babcia was born on St. Joseph’s Day so her name was Josephine. This was my Mom’s mom and she was basically the only one who was understanding when I graduated and accepted a job in San Antonio. She did ask me why I was going so far away from my family and I mentioned that she had left Poland so she supported me. I also had an aunt named Josephine who was my Dad’s sister.
Wordy my sincere condolences. I’m sure your friend’s family will appreciate the letters with the reminisces.
Evening all. Did more laundry today, everything I can wash has been washed, but still need to fold the underwear (it’s in another room, so if I can’t see it, it doesn’t have to be done right now). Did do my swim-n-sauna workout and just finished my Big Bowl O’Sallid for dinner. It feels like Saturday here for some reason, I have to keep reminding myself that it is Friday.
I’m half-Irish but really don’t get into the St. Patrick’s day stuff, never cared for corned beef or cabbage all that much, and don’t drink to excess (outside of a couple times in college…). My bathrooms are painted green, however.
Hippo Birdies two Ewes pearl!!
God Bod , such is life in your second decade on the planet; hope it all works out for the good.
FCM, hope FCD feels better tomorrow.
hippie, love your QA inspector. Must like it because they didn’t hork up anything on it.
shoe, glad both your and Charm are fed and happy.
wordy, sorry to hear about your friend. I’ve never smoked in my life, but my mom did when I was growing up, so just one more thing to worry about, I guess. And good luck to overlyboy on Moanday.
Bumba, don’t think I ever was at a Farrell’s (looks like they are all closed now), used to go to Friendly’s when they were open in Ohio (closed now according to Wikipedia and only located in the Northeast).
Since we’re speaking of restaurants, anybody been to PotBelly? Only visited them 2-3 times but love their sammiches.
Love It !!!
OK, need to watch some more basketball and finish the night’s internetting, so all y’all take care.
I went to the gym intending to spend extra time there so the aroma of simmering corned beef wouldn’t make me too hungry. You probably don’t recall the knee injury I had a few months ago. Doc said it’d resolve itself within two months, and that I could work out as usual. He was right. But two days ago, I re-injured it, and it’s worse than before. I pushed through 30 minutes on the treadmill and had to stop. So I’m icing it now and have it elevated. I’m also having a mini-martini (which my sister calls “liquid painkiller”) with an olive so it’s a little more Irish.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PEARL!!! And don’t be such a stranger!
Hey, I’m a mousse imbiber! I am on my own, though.
CatGlove, we must be twins! You wear red on St. Joseph’s Day, and⬇️ your Gramma was a Josephine born on 3/19. My Aunt Jo (Giuseppina, Americanized to Josephine) was also born on 3/19! St. Joe isn’t the patron saint of Italy, though (Saints Francis of Asissi and Catherine of Siena are); he’s just especially beloved by Italian-Americans. I had a foreign exchange student from Italy, and he said and Mom confirmed SJD isn’t celebrated there. But then, I understand St Paddy’s Day isn’t really celebrated in Ireland.
GodBod, I’m so sorry about your boyfriend. I’m heartened, though, that you realized you deserve someone better. You’d be surprised how many people don’t. Let yourself grieve and then look forward.
Bumba, my cousin used to work at a Farrell’s and has fond memories of the place. When someone ordered a pig trough, the staff led them in a chant. I can’t recall the words except I think you had to say, “I’m a little piggy!” or something.
Napped. Dreamed I went walking in a winter storm
, and I had to fish a friend out of a semi-frozen Great Lake. Then I dreamed I was at a cat adoption event and a black and white cat chose me. Hockey wasn’t as good as the dreams, but the Guinness is.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY PEARL!!!
I’m Polish on my mother’s side. I never learned to cook Polish food(Grandma made it, Mom made Hamburger Helper)
“Better have loved and lost, then live with that psycho for the rest of your life”
Welcome to the club!
Sorry, GodBod
I think your future owner has alerted you that you are claimed.
{{{CorpusNeptune}}} I know it hurts now, but it would have hurt a lot worse later on, when you had more time and emotion invested. Someone lying to you this early in, that’s a big red flag about their character. I know from experience it’s better to be happily single than in a bad relationship.
Wow, there are a lot of Polish and semi-Polish Mumpers!
Czeszcz!
Irk was fine. I worked the fryers and set up pizzas and worked the drive-thru window, pretty much as expected. Not all at the same time - mostly - but yeah.
Nobody needs to know I was wearing my pajama pants. snerk I figured out a long time ago that nobody gives two $#its as long as you have a work shirt, and are actually wearing some type of pants.
Plus, my PJs have pockets and any woman will tell you, that’s crucial.
{ clutches pearls }
(Not really.)
{ pouts and feels left out from the perv whispering }
I genuinely LOL’d.
This is excellent advice. GodBod please heed the wise words of our lovely Nell for she knows many things.
Sheesh, I did have pajama pants. Which I then wore to work (see above) cuz it’s a hella chilly day and these are fleece lined and warm. And have pockets!!!
Oh, yeah, and we started off the day with a visit from the health inspector.
We passed, of course - management is cool, but they run a pretty tight ship - but that shit always freaks me out. I always get so nervous that I am the one that’s gonna get the place shut down, somehow.
Hey, I have anxiety, and limited back-of-house experience. Suddenly a guy with a clip board shows up, and I’m like, “Ohcrapohcrapohcrap.”
Woah, “Lake Effect” snow just kicked in, with a vengeance.
There’s no wind, and I’m tempted to go for a 2 a.m. walk, to enjoy the muffled silence and the feel of snowflakes melting in my hair.
… and so, I did. I am home safely now, dearest Mumpers, and once my ears thaw out (okay, it’s a bit colder out there than I thought) I shall brush teeth and seek the sweet embrace of Mr. Sandman.
Happy Birthday Pearl! Congrats on surviving yet another year.
That is such a shame, there really isn’t anything like real cheese when it comes to melty goodness. The vegan chez I sell starts with oatmeal. Then I add a whole bunch of chemicals and come up with something that can be grated to melt on vegan pizza. It is not very healthy.
I worked in Waikiki, I lived on the other side of the island. Waikiki was a very strange place 35 years ago, I expect it is much stranger now!
The thing I learned working in Waikiki is that some people should not wear g-string bikinis. I like you guys so I won’t elaborate.
Never, ever and it’s constant and always costs more than it should. Like swampy said…it is a law or something!
Hurray. Clean sheets can be magic at times
Godbod, I’m sorry for the broken heart, but it’s good that you can still be friends.
Diablo IV beta came out today and hubs is using all of our bandwidth and saying all of the bad words he knows because it is just a test version and crashes a lot. I’m sure the final version will be much better. Better internet would probably be very helpful as well, but that’s going to be a long time coming out here.
NONONO!!! They all just smerked when they brought it and made comments about how a little kid like me couldn’t possibly lick the trough clean. THEN they made a fuss while people clapped. Ferrals was a birthday treat and only the birthday girl got the pig trough. The others helped when the birthday girl started flagging, but all of our troughs were licked clean!
GG does a fist pump.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. It’s raining, but it’s my Firday.
“Oh crap, I forgot I left a six pack of frozen mice defrosting under the broiler!”
In that case, I hope the cat gets along with the 6 foot dwarf Allosarus I dreamed I had.
Speaking of the Devil Weed, I never did and never wanted to. Firstly because I find smoking in general to be gross (except in my magic smoker) but mainly because from age 19 on, I had a security clearance and any drug use would have ended that and my career. Other than idly wondering if it would affect me, I just was never interested.
Stoopit bladder woke me around 4. We’ll see if I can fall back to sleep or not…
And I read in bed till a tad after 6. Since then, I’ve tended the critters and stuffed a PB&J on 12-grain toast into my gaping maw. Caffeination continues.
It rained overnight, but we’re promised sun this afternoon, from the I’ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it department. FCD hopes to get the kids’ door installed in a couple-three hours at most. Then we’ll have the next 3 days to do boat stuff. And if the long-range forecast is to be trusted, I may finally be able to put my spider plants back out on the porch by Moanday!
The only required chore today or tomorrow is cleaning the critter fountain. I did laundry yesterday afternoon. OK, so I’ll also have to load the dishwasher, but that’s pretty much every day anyway, so it doesn’t really count.
And so it begins - another exciting day. Happy Saturday!!
Stoopit brain woke me up at 5 AM to fret about work stuff that isn’t happening for another month. I guess since we had a client visit yesterday and it went well, had to find something to stress about, had to start thinking about the load-in.
Not much planned for the day, a trip to the grocery sto, the booze sto, and TJ’s. Cook something, I dunno what, depends what I find at the grocery. Vaguely thinking of corned beef, since I didn’t have any yesterday.
Have a great weekend, y’all.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 46 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 55 and N.O.S. for the day. I predict a day of the usual sloth and general overall uselessness. Sup shall be chili/cheese/onion/slaw dawgs and oven fries with ensuin’ fartfest.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Happy Sattidy Y’all!
Last evening, I was looking for something for us to do on our way to the ocean next month. Since we just did the marine museum in St. Michael’s, we aren’t interested in going back just now. But I discovered there’s a zoo in Salisbury and it’s free! Not that an admission charge would necessarily have prevented us from visiting, but I was surprised that it’s free.
So we’ll stop there on our way to OC - theoretically our room won’t be available till 4. We can sleep in, have breakfast, then make the not-quite 3-hour drive, wander about, have a late lunch, and continue on to the hotel. I love when a plan comes together!! But that still leaves Tues, Weds, and maybe Thurs to fill with fun… or relaxation… or something. Still, we have a beginning! I’m getting excited!
Happy Saturday!
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. The only things on the agenda today are shopping for a new 20 oz. travel mug (the lid to mine fell into the gap between the counter and the fridge, then rolled behind the fridge) and going in search of some SF cough drops (they’re on back order again at da Jungle). I may hit the grocery outlet while I’m out and if I do, since I’ll be in the 'Boro anyway, I may stop at Sprout’s for some pearl barley.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
Morning all. Have broken fast already and not a lot on the agenda, it should get to 50F today and only 43F tomorrow, but then it will start warming up again. Have paid my credit card bills a day or so early, so that is done, maybe do a little house-cleaning if I feel motivated.
FCM, zoos are always good for a couple hours, enjoy.
VanGo, know what you mean, my brain will not let me be at times, especially if I have something on my mind. Which is why naps are a good thing…
shoe, haven’t been on a 2am walk in the snow in a long time…enjoy sleepage.
nellie, hope the knee is doing better today. I’m having a sharp pain in my left hand, but it seems to come and go, so I don’t know what to make of it.
OK, onward into the day. Everyone have a good Sattiday.
A ‘Pig Trough’ was a double banana split – two scoops each of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream, with two bananas (or possibly only one), whipped cream, nuts and a cherry (or two), served in a dish that looked like a tin pig trough. If you ate the whole thing by yourself they had you stand up and “awarded” you a sticker that said “I made a pig of myself at Farrell’s.” The really big sundae (don’t remember what they called it) was 21 scoops of assorted flavours of ice cream; two people carried it out on a stretcher, and made sure they ran past every table in the restaurant with it before finally delivering it to you. They also served sandwiches, including a huge sub called a ‘Gastronomicaldelicatessenepicurean’s Delight’, IIRC.
We had a Timmie’s here for a couple of years, but the company closed all its stores in the area in 2010 – too much competition from Dunkin’ Donuts. (The place is still standing vacant, alas.) Good coffee and doughnuts, though the latter were smaller than Dunkin’s.
I was there from '86 to '89. Went to Waikiki once, Hotel Street once (hey, it’s a mandatory stop for sailors! ), and Waimea twice. I also spent a lot of time in the barracks, sheltering from the vile climate. Hawai`i is a beautiful place, and I’m glad I got to go there, but two weeks was more than enough – in fact, I’m in CT now because it’s not Hawai`i.
Never been to either Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods. The closest ones are about an hour away – in fact, Google Maps has me drive right past TJ on the way to WF. There’s (or at least used to be) a Barnes & Noble in that same general area; maybe I’ll go up to have a look around.
Woke up this morning with Eraser sleeping on my knee, Jiji and Lily by my feet, and Nandi between Lady SCAdian and me. The three black cats (they were melanistic tabbies when they were younger, but the markings are no longer visible) are collectively known as “the Void” or “the Abyss”.
The corned beef and cabbage we had planned for yesterday will happen tonight instead.
