That’s an argument for Republican politicans not openly repudiating Trump, but not for their continuing to explicitly support and praise him.
Yes, if Trump loses this election, Trumpsters may be sulky in future elections that their GOP congresscritters didn’t march into battle for him more ardently, but what can they do about it? Vote for a Democrat instead? Yeah, right.
The ratios for mail-in ballots in PA skew bluer than the in-person. A while back I cited a very red PA county that reported a bunch of mail-in ballots that were 63% Biden. Philadelphia County mail-ins are running 90% Biden even though the in-person ratio was 80%.
They won’t vote for a Democrat, but they will stay home. 2018 was a blue tsunami. So was 2020. The difference is that 2020 was also a red tsunami, just a slightly smaller one, while 2018 wasn’t. The difference is largely the MAGAs. The key for Democrats going forward is not so much turning out the blue base, but keeping the red base from getting worked up.
ETA. The Democrats need blue waves while simultaneously avoiding red waves. Admittedly this is the first election in recent memory where both sides were so energized. I’m guessing the last time that happened was before I was born, and that was when Carter was president.
I apologize if I’m misreading your response, but the VP does not get the Majority Leader installed. In the case of a tie, the party of the VP is considered to be the majority party, and the Majority Leader is selected by its members.
Example: 1953, Senate split 50-50. VP was GOP (Nixon). Senate Majority Leader was GOP (Robert Taft, Jr, R-OH).
Yeah I think the GOP has a dilemma going forward. Most of them hate Trump but know without him they lose a lot of voters who just don’t care unless their candidate is Trump or someone very much like him.
This could have been the GOP’s electoral high tide.
The question was is there a majority leader if the senate is split 50/50. My answer was yes and the VP is the tiebreaker (so, obviously, it goes to the VP’s party).
My math had assumed the mail ins from Trumpist counties would be at least moderately okay for Trump - if not in his favor at least close enough to help him run out the clock. But nope. Joe Biden will win Pennsylvania.
Just a reminder that had Trump, in January, been honest about coronavirus, taken it seriously, and marshalled a genuine national response, he’d have easily beaten whatever luckless Democrat had gotten the nomination.
