Election Day [Week][Month[s]] [Year] 2020 follow-along thread

That is priceless.

There will certainly be recounts in several states.

In several of the states, recounts are triggered if the margin is small enough. Wisconsin would qualify there. Looks like PA might qualify as well.

In several of them, if the candidate requests the recount, he has to pay for it unless the recount casts him as the winner.

In PA, a recount can be requested by voters: “a signed petition from three voters alleging fraud or error can prompt a recount, without having to cite any specific cases or evidence of fraud”. Then “If there appears to be no evidence of fraud and the election outcome is unchanged in any significant way, the candidate will have to foot the bill for the recount.” - which is confusing. That may be only if a candidate challenges the state’s decision whether to recount.

But I would definitely expect there to be a LOT of nuisance “fraud” recount requests by Trumpistas in PA.

I would not want to be one of these trump aides…

Oh, not because of that, I just would not want to be a trump aide.

It’s not over yet, but Trump must be throwing a fit right now. CNN reports the Secret Service has increased their presence around Biden, and I assume Vice President Harris as well.

The more people act as if Biden has won the more it hurts Trump!

Biden takes the lead in PA by ~5000 votes.

I was angling more for a pure real estate play than a dictator impugning

I have to say that this has been the most gut-wrenching last couple of days, but it has also been pretty dang amazing. I know it’s probably the hormones talking, but my eyes have been wet all morning over Georgia. For real, I love my peeps down there.

That’s how I felt when Doug Jones won in 2016. Like, it shouldn’t have been a question if Roy Moore would win, but damn. I didn’t think they had it in them.

I don’t hold much hope it will ever get better than the “Don’t vote for the batshit crazy, twice impeached, horse-riding to the polling place 80 year old child predator”. But at least it’s something.

That explanation might work for the hoi polloi but one would expect Dopers to be more discerning. :stuck_out_tongue:
Seriously the twitter feeds of the two Nates have probably been the best guide to what’s been happening over the last few days. And they have actually been cautious, for example stressing the uncertainty in Arizona, but the trend in PA has been very clear for a while now and that was all Biden needed.

I think part of it is that the news media has an interest in spinning out the story and keeping the viewers hooked alongside an understandable caution about making premature calls. If you have been watching TV over the last few days it’s probably looked closer and more uncertain than it really was.

I meant that the nerves were caused by the inaction of the PA state legislature. The sheer size of the gap on election day was pretty intimidating.

The 2016 feeling of confidence started turning into the 4-year dread when we saw Florida turn red.

On Tuesday, seeing Florida turn red again triggered something pretty visceral in me. I’m not going to call it straight-up PTSD because that’s trivializing a real condition, but I think it was at least PTSD’s second cousin.

Even knowing the statistical predictions didn’t help: when Florida went red, 538 said that Biden still had like a 66% chance of victory, which is what Clinton started with in 2016.

So you bet your ass I’ve been nervous over the past three days. It may not be 100% rational, but the flashbacks to 2016 were too strong–and the chances that Trump would make our world significantly worse over the next 4 years were too horrifying.

A liberal one.

Well, Biden rebuilt the Blue Wall, and even better, he made Trump pay for it.

The Spreadsheet lists 136k ballots yet to be counted. If the trend continues, Biden will win by about 100k votes. Which was predicted (by Corville, I believe) a couple of days ago.

On NBC Chuck Todd just called trump a ‘whiner’. Heehee.

One factor might be how close the electoral college vote is. It’s one thing to be a protest voter in a decided vote. It’s an entirely different thing to be the one person who changed the outcome of a US presidential election. Electoral college votes are public record. Wikipedia lists the faithless electors from 2016.

I can’t imagine what life would be like for an individual who actually changed a presidential outcome as a faithless elector. I’m guessing they’d need bodyguards for years, and no ability to live a normal life due to the notoriety.

FWIW the NYTimes put out this update:

Nick Corasaniti, in Philadelphia 11m ago

Biden gained 27,396 votes in the latest update from Philadelphia, and Trump 3,760, putting Biden in the lead. There are still roughly 20,000 ballots to count in the city.

Sen. Bob Casey also said 100,000 votes, easy a couple days ago.

Well played.

Yeah, nice. Hopefully the Blue Wall keeps out the caravans of future trumpers.
