Was there a huge celebration in the streets like that when Obama won? Its nice to see. However, its apparently not necessary to social distance anymore, as long as you are celebrating a Democrats win. Hmmmm
I have a question: If you accidentally stumbled on proof that Trump actually won, would you report it?
I agree it’s unlikely, but it would be chaos if it ever did. I’m also not sure how one would best estimate the probability of it happening. Is it more likely for the tipping point state to be extremely close than it is for the popular vote to be? There’s also the consideration that campaigns would be run differently, and that can tend to push things toward a 50-50 split.
Heads up, from 5 minutes ago (as I type this):
It would be a lot of work, but chaos? The states all counted the ballots once, they are capable of doing it a second time if required.
Who? What? I don’t get it.
Yes, enlighten me on the meaning of this. (re: Barr walking into McConnell’s office)
Barr just entered McConnell’s office. What that means yet remains to be seen.
Oh. I didn’t even get that much, so thanks.
And while we’re waiting for the significance of that to unfold, may I predict the evolution of this thread title:
It began as the “Election Day 2020 follow-along thread.”
It was edited to the “Election Day [Week] follow-along thread.”
I believe it will soon need to become the “Election Day [Weeks] follow-along thread.”
Somewhere in there it is certain to top 10k posts, so we’ll need “Return of the Election Day [Weeks] follow-along thread” or “Election Day [Weeks] follow-along thread Part 2.”
Let us hope it never becomes [Months], but I am not so sure.
Headline: “SC’s Graham says Trump should consider a 2024 run if every legal option is exhausted”.
I think the election is over, but the matter of when and under what circumstances Trump leaves office is far from settled.
The republicans have created a cult, and that cult is going to outlive Trump’s presidency. In the meantime, if I didn’t know any better, I would say that the republicans seem to be increasingly toying with the idea of playing constitutional hardball and urging right-leaning legislatures to select their own slate of electors. It seems like an outrageous idea, but nothing is outrageous to republicans anymore.
Whether states go along with that idea or not, and exactly how much traction this conspiracy gets, I have no idea. But I certainly think it’s within the realm of the possible. Republicans don’t do democracy and they don’t do reality. As I said: authoritarian cult.
When you comin’ home, Dad?
I don’t know when. We’ll get together then. You know we’ll have a good time then . . .
Has he ever explained why he shifted to “tell Donald Trump to go to Hell!” and “Joe Biden is one of the finest people you’d ever meet,” to “I love this Trump guy so much.”
States cannot change the rules on their electors during an election precisely to avoid shit like that. They have to go with what they have now (which differs state-to-state). If their current law allows for such a switch then they could do that. Otherwise they have to wait to change the rules.
I do not think any states allow such a drastic change at this point but I am certainly not up on all 50 state electoral laws.
This could be fun:
I wouldn’t mind seeing that. Trump certainly helps turn out the blue vote. I’m not so sure he could maintain the red vote though.
Need more context, @JohnT . The followup tweet said Barr walked right out again. Probably because Mitch wasn’t there. Barr just wanted to steal some pencils.
“Election Day 2020: A Clusterfuck in the Making”
And now McConnell is backing Trumpism that he should be able to exhaust the legal process before conceding and “the Constitution gives no role in this process of wealthy media corporations”.
I’m still not sure that’s the best way forward. Ideally, we all want the source of the misinformation to stop; mocking them won’t accomplish that. And no matter how well-meaning you are with your family, saying “the guy who told you that is stupid” carries the unspoken follow-up “…and you were stupid to believe them”.
I’m not prefect, and I’ve fallen for lies I shouldn’t have. I don’t want to be laughed at; just give me a path to be a little smarter tomorrow than I am today.
The problem with this plot is that it would take 2 or 3 states to pull it off (assuming Biden’s lead holds in Georgia and Arizona). A state legislature contradicting the will of the majority of their constituents would be political suicide, just for the glory of Trump. Getting 1 legislature to do that would be tiny; getting 2 would be infinitesimal.
Ya know…it is fine. “Conceding” is not a legal thing. No one needs Trump to concede. It doesn’t change anything. Perhaps the transition office will drag their feet but whatever.
Trump will be shown the door on January 20 whether he concedes or not.
