If people seriously voted for Trump because they thought Joe friggin’ Biden is a socialist then the party’s got some real long term reckoning to do. His entire career has been about middle ground and even bragging about being once rated the most conservative democrat in the senate.
He looks like he’s brought back a sizeable chunk of white working class voters in the midwest to rebuild the blue wall but a lot of the experts said for years the sunbelt states would be more suited for Dems in the future than the rustbelt.
When I went to bed last night, Trump was > 60 cents on PredictIt. He peaked at 72 and about 3 hours ago, he started falling rapidly so that Biden is now in the 80s. Before the election, it was about 60/40 in favor of Biden.
I guess that’s somewhat of a good sign.

Dade county, heavily Cuban latino population, broke 62% for HRC, but Biden got a little over 50%. Why? It wasn’t about $15/hr because we’ve been having this conversation at least that long. Reports say it’s because the GOP had a larger ground game in Florida than Dems and they’ve done it for longer. To the extent that Cubans and Latin Americans are more aligned with GOP because of their bad experience with socialist authoritative regimes is one narrative but it’s a bullshit one. Not a single one of them should think for a split second that Trump would have welcomed their boats on Florida shores if they had been coming over when he was president. Instead of caravans, he would have called them flotillas and told them to keep floating.
What we’re seeing play out is a socialist phobia that has been planted in their heads over the past 4 years. This isn’t a Dem failure in Florida. It’s a failure of people’s intelligence to overcome their Trumped up irrational fears. And it would not surprise me at all if highly targeted Russian social media played a role because they’ve had lots of practice in manipulating Latin America politics.
The fact that Republicans are making inroads with latino voters makes them even more important. They actually are becoming a bigger demographic group, so it makes sense for Democrats to focus on appealing to them.
